This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

@Thewiseoneincognito - I'd probably not go out at all but only if it was vital, as late as possible in the day i.e after 4pm ish.

whereareyousleep · 17/02/2022 14:04

We are in Barnsley/Rotherham just on the edge of the amber warning we're both at work 8-10 miles away on country roads. We also have a 3 year old who has to walk a mile back from nursery at 11.45 with a 65+ year old grandparent. Every time I look on met office the intensity and gusts are changing and I really don't know what to do I'm not too worried about the driving but I'm not keen on the 3 year old having to walk in it. Mine and DH's work would not be impressed if we didn't go!!

Thewiseoneincognito · 17/02/2022 14:05

@Usernumber5253747293 let’s say you’re in the red zone in a beachfront property 🙈 wtf do we do 🙏🏻😱

I'm SW and in the red zone. Work are shutting the entire site tomorrow, which is unheard of, production usually runs 24/7, so clearly not taking any chances.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 17/02/2022 14:09

@Changes17

Hmm, DS's school is in the red zone though we are amber. They still haven't said if the school will be closed...
We were in the red area for Arwen and I was so angry that the schools didn't close on the Friday. Mind, it wasn't due to peak till early afternoon. I picked up DD at 3pm and dozens of trees came down with mass damage to the whole area shortly afterwards.

If need be, make the decision yourself. We are in the North and I was laughed at for gaffer taping my bins shut. Far too much bravado up here in severe weather situations.

CaveMum · 17/02/2022 14:09
@twoshinyspoons there is a big difference between the BBC and Met office for our area, I prefer the Met office figures!
Same here! BBC are saying gusts of 81mph around midday for us but Met Office say 66mph - that's a heck of a difference!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/02/2022 14:10

@Hugasauras

And I definitely wouldn't drive in an amber warning. We had an amber warning recently and it was scary out there. Trees coming down all over, solar panels flying off roofs. Unless it's life or death I would stay home. And we are no stranger to storms in the north of Scotland, but I would have felt very uncomfortable driving in it.
I agree. I wouldn't either, unless absolutely essential. With a very narrow definition of essential.

All trains in wales cancelled for tomorrow and most schools in south and midxwales also closed

HappySonHappyMum · 17/02/2022 14:12

@OhYouBadBadKitten Thanks for the thread - are you a real life meteorologist or an enthusiastic amateur? Can I ask the websites you use to look at the models? I find all this weather stuff really interesting and would love to learn more.

thegreylady · 17/02/2022 14:13

The BBC weather app is forecasting winds over 70 mph for us tomorrow. I am scared of being without power as we have no alternative to electricity for heating and cooking. I am nearly 78 and dh 86 and in poor health. 🤞

@HesterShaw1

Insurance companies must be shitting themselves 😬
My friend is getting speedy training in property damage claims to work on the phones next week at one of the big insurance companies. All hands on deck!
Calennig · 17/02/2022 14:15

We're in the red zone and most schools in city are doing work from home tommorrow but next town over the college is still planning to be open currently so will have to keep an eye open and see if buses are running.

We'll keep an eye open for notices and see what the weather is like in the morning - DH and I are home anyway so it is just DD1.

We have family traveling by train to us - but they'll be doing so more in afternoon and currently says worse should be over by mid day.

I don't think we're being blasé just waiting for more information the deciding on best course of action.

FuzzyPuffling · 17/02/2022 14:16

@ABCDEF1234

As someone who lives in the North and is surrounded by villages who lost power for 2 weeks after Arwen you will be fine. The massive learnings have happened up here and the responses to the latest storms have been much better and quicker. I have no doubt that the providers down south will currently be talking to those in the North. Yes charge everything but if the power is off for a while they will put people in hotels and provide food - there were 5 food catering vans within about 4 miles of my home last time.
Ha ha ha ha...laughs in a sardonic sort of way.

Might be ok if this is the populated places in the SE but in the rural SW our lived experience of storms is very different to this.

NeedWineNow · 17/02/2022 14:22

We're in the amber area. In London in the City today where all is quite calm, and out for dinner and drinks this evening. We've decided it will not be a late night back in case SE Trains do their usual trick of 'preventative' cancellations and I am working at home tomorrow anyway. The thing for us (me) will be if our WiFi goes on and off tomorrow whilst I'm trying to work, which is usual for us with bad weather. There could be some swearing if that happens!

Calennig · 17/02/2022 14:24

DD1 been told collge is on-line and trains aren't running nor replacemnt buses - so trying to get hold of family as they can come down as planned.

So we all in the house and just need to sort of what traveling family are going to be doing now.

OohRahhMaki · 17/02/2022 14:24

Arghh I am due to fly Glasgow to Bristol 8.45am tomorrow.

There is no information about the flight being cancelled but really have no idea what to think... (Sorry if I have missed it) but I can't see any info on flying during Eunice.

HoldOnToYourHat · 17/02/2022 14:25

We have close family travelling from the Chesterfield, Derbyshire area tomorrow, leaving at some point after 4pm, and travelling in a car loaded up with kids and pets to Sutton-on-Sea on the Lincolnshire coast. Any thoughts please on whether it is likely to be safe to travel at that time and in that area of the country, and whether it would be better to stick to the motorway or go cross-country?

Calennig · 17/02/2022 14:25

as they can't come down as planned.

They may be able to cancel hotel but not sure what train tickets they have.

PeskyRooks · 17/02/2022 14:25

Just got an email that dd1 school is closed for tomorrow in Dorset apparently all Dorset schools are closed tomorrow.
Heard nothing from dd2&3 school in Wiltshire but think I will keep them off to be on the safe side!

thegreylady · 17/02/2022 14:27

Met office app looks much more benign than BBC

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 17/02/2022 14:30

@BuritoCat

Checking in. Hopefully the power grid is prepared this time!
How should it be prepared exactly?

I just read the same in FB but have not heard from dd1’s school yet. Hoping we can start half term a day early.
MrsRussell · 17/02/2022 14:33

@HesterShaw1 I think you're further west than me (and @Usernumber5253747293 it is entirely possible that mine and your DC are at the same school) but if you lose power and it's safe to do so, we're main road mid Cornwall and we have two wood burners - it'd be a squeeze but we'd make some room for you!

TweeBee · 17/02/2022 14:34

Argh, firs day of half term for us tomorrow. Christmas holiday was taken up with rolling isolations so was really hoping for a good start to this holiday. I'm supposed to be taking DD to Manchester on train and DH taking DS to Halifax by road.
I'm really anxious about risking it and getting injured, or saying we all stay in and only having a slight breeze.
Hoping for clarity with forecast later.
