It was 14 degrees here (North West) yesterday, I put my big coat on to go out, just out of habit and was sweltering after only a few minutes. It's 11 degrees so far today, predicted to be around 10 all week. Definitely not normal for this time of year.

I noticed the bees too. Buzzing about the flowers. Worrying.

I know global warming is massive problem. The issue is anything i do as an individual will make so little difference and if the last 2 yrs have shown everything is that most people wont believe that there is a problem and wont do a thing to improve the situation.
So while i will continue to do what i can i am also aware that there is little difference that this will make so there is a need to balance between doing what we can but also switchingnoff from the things we cant change

Cocoabutterformula · 02/01/2022 11:44

With leaders like Bolsonaro we are truly f***d although hasn't even he acknowledged it might be happening. We need to be planting billions of trees all over the planet right now, an easy and cheap thing to do, turbines and solar panels everywhere too, try and throw everything we can at it as quickly as humanly possible.get us into some sort of holding pattern whilst we try and work out what the hell we are going to do.

MarshaBradyo · 02/01/2022 11:45

This was posted earlier which was interesting

xkcd.com/1732/

It shows the heating up and cooling down over time

This is last part, in the blue area mainly and crossing slightly at times

If you think what we are experiencing is within natural cycle, is this wrong?

Is anyone else freaked out
georgarina · 02/01/2022 11:53

@Covidworries I understand this point of view but think the worst thing we can do is remain complacent and not talk about it - even if there is no solution at present we need to be talking about it, getting emotional, seeing there's a problem and being loud about it.

Otherwise nothing will change at all.

It'll get cold in February. Then we have something else to fret about Grin.

KangSaeByeok · 02/01/2022 12:34

And that's why Don't Look Up is a documentary.

gravybones · 02/01/2022 12:37

@Pebble21uk

Forgive a really ignorant question, but looking at that map of impact on the UK, we have lots of flooding due to wetter weather (some is sea rises) but also big areas of UK drought. Can we not off-set one against the other?
I'm not sure how we could do this? The flooding will happen at coastal areas and river flood plains. The drought will happen elsewhere.

We have already reached a point where we're having to decide which costal towns will no longer be defended and will be left to flood. I think there will be many more

I trust you've read the thread? Hmm

Bumply · 02/01/2022 14:17

Not as freaked out as my sister in BC Canada.

Last year she had

  • low visibility due to wildfires in US and wind carrying the smoke over to BC.
  • record temperatures in summer 48° which is way over normal peaks
  • record rain that destroyed roads and bridges in her neighbourhood
  • and now a cold snap, which although not record breaking is still pretty damn cold when the max for the day is -4°

I'm concerned for the future, but glad I live somewhere where the extremes are mild compared to other countries.

MadameMinimes · 02/01/2022 14:33

@Bumply Our extremes are milder for now. We are at pretty much the same latitude as BC, so the weather that they are experiencing is absolutely possible here if climate change continues. London is actually a couple of degrees further North than Vancouver.

First of all, sustainability is not confined to environmental issues. It is a way of thinking and behaving. Maybe start by reading up on the pillars of sustainability, it will help you understand why the environment is in rapid decline

What blind bit of difference does it make if I read up on it? Other than make me depressed and worried. It's much too big an issue to have on my to do list, and it's really pointless worrying about it.

If 7 billion people decide that it's too big an issue to have on their to do list, then we truly are screwed. Have you seen the villagers competing for water with crocodiles in Africa? Fires in coloraro? Huge floods in China? How about Antartica ice shelf? Not worrying is not an option.
jane1956 · 02/01/2022 17:36

Weather is NOT global warming it is coming up from south ie France and Spain do you not watch forecasts it is explained in them and was expected

AdoraBell · 02/01/2022 17:36

We laid turf a couple of weeks ago, it’s growing. Last week we were in a shop we go to regularly, so always chat with the staff. One of them said his spring bulbs are already coming up. Very concerning.

Properjob · 02/01/2022 17:37

Haven't RTFT so don't know if anyone else is rolling their eyes...yes its a temporary heatwave that has happened before BUT simultaneously, average global temperatures are warming due to climate change...these things are not the same or mutually exclusive...in the UK global warming will not give us a Mediterranean climate we'll probably get even more summer rain and flooding. Lovely!!

Rp735 · 02/01/2022 17:41

Me too. Having recently watched "Don't look up" , I am a bundle of nerves!

EvilPea · 02/01/2022 17:48

All the wildlife is waking up which is a problem as there isn’t the flowers / food yet to sustain them.
Plus there’s a good chance it will get cold again.

AdoraBell · 02/01/2022 17:55

Just remembered, DH joined a neighbourhood app and yesterday another member posted a photo of a bee looking for nectar in her garden, Somerset.

inheritancetrack · 02/01/2022 17:56

Dont worry, it will be back to freezing on tuesday according to the weather forecast. Often have freak weather events.

Cocoabutterformula · 02/01/2022 18:01

inheritancetrack

Jesus Christ another one citing Tuesday for the reason it's all going to be just fine Hmm

muddyford · 02/01/2022 18:01

I saw a butterfly yesterday!

MissConductUS · 02/01/2022 18:04

The forecast here is for an overnight low of -5C. That feels pretty normal.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 02/01/2022 18:09

@Spanielsarepainless

I saw 3 bees today.!!
