I am a bit concerned about this one. Widespread gusts to 60mph, but reaching 80mph in parts of the NE. Winds from a NW direction will bring down more trees than you would expect for this level of gusts as it is an unusual direction.

Massive hats off to all the pilots, cabin crews and air traffic controllers last night, they really had their work cut out, didn't they?

It will have been an interesting day at the office that’s for sure…

Many of the crews who diverted late last night from the likes of Manchester will have done so at the back end of a possibly multiple sector very long duty day…there will have been some very very long shifts worked yesterday.

bigbluebus · 27/11/2021 10:22

Power been off since 10pm last night and not forecast to be restored until 4pm today - although that was last night's estimate and hasn't changed in spite of continuing winds. Last time we had a storm like this some local villages were off for 3 days! Reports of multiple roads blocked by trees and all trains are cancelled. We've got no heating but do at least have an lpg gas hob. Some of the neighbours are all electric so 85 year old neighbour currently has our butane camping stove so she can have a hot drink/meal. I'm just waiting for our buglar alarm to start sounding when the back up battery runs out but fortunately it was replaced last month so hopefully it will last a bit longer yet!

Heffapotamus · 27/11/2021 10:23

Got away lightly here in Dundee - still have power. Lots of trees down around the city though and some areas without power.

Unescorted · 27/11/2021 10:25

We have power! Hassar!

RainbowBabyForChristmasPlease · 27/11/2021 10:29

@Teenagetrouble

Should we avoid driving tonight if in a red zone? Was planning on going locally for a meal
I certainly wouldn't risk it. I was driving home from work last year and a gust of wind (not even that strong) buffeted my car across to the other side of the road. Luckily the car coming in the opposite direction was a distance away but it was definitely an oh shit moment.
TheVolturi · 27/11/2021 10:30

I'm also nw and we usually get battered as we are very open, but it's really not been too bad thankfully, no idea why!

RainbowBabyForChristmasPlease · 27/11/2021 10:45

@Perihelion

Having seen trampoline carnage from hurricane Bawbag, I would suggest trampoline owners, either tie them to sturdy, big trees or remove the netting and the jumping surface. In 80mph gusts, it's pretty impossible to weigh them down. It's windy at the moment, but not mentally so. The A1 is shut between Dunbar and Haddington, to stop lorries getting blown over.
My OH (HGV driver) travelled back up from Leeds last night. Said it was as calm as anything down there but as he got further back up North he said it was horrendous. Said it was made worse by the fact he was nigh on empty and in the end he had to drop his speed right down. We were talking through Bluetooth and it sounded as though the roof of the trailer had blown off and the cages inside were being smashed around. I was so relieved when he text me to tell me he was back home safe.
RIPWalter · 27/11/2021 11:08

Our shed roof has come off in North Wales (but we are 330m up the side of a mountain, so not hugely surprising). Fortunately I'm on annual leave tomorrow but was not planning on freezing my tits off trying to fix a shed Confused

Still a strong wind here in yesterday's red zone. DP slept like a log as per, but the noise kept me up most of the night. We got off lightly. Leccy stayed on, only lost a few slates and a garden fence. Lots of local trees down, but public transport's running again. I've never known anything like it, really scary and unsettling.

StephieSlade · 27/11/2021 16:40

Thankfully, I decided to leave Heather in the field last night 😲😲😲!

@StephieSlade oh wow!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/11/2021 17:24

Very sadly there are now three reported deaths from the storm. I think its good that the worst of it was overnight as its clear that many people either didn't receive or didn't understand the warnings.

The Aberdeenshire one is a 35yo guy. Happened at 5.30pm yesterday, tree fell onto his pick-up truck Sad and while the police were responding, another tree fell and totally crushed their police van. Thankfully they weren't inside at the time. It's absolutely mental up here. So many still without power, local businesses offering free showers and hot meals to people, trees down everywhere.

Starcaller · 27/11/2021 17:37

Here's a pic of the police van.

We ventured out to the local shop today, a few fences down but our village has come off very well compared to some others near us.

Both Christmas fairs that I baked for were cancelled so I took my baking round to various (happy) neighbours. SIL lives near Alnwick and has a lot of damage to her property Sad

colouringindoors · 27/11/2021 18:09

That police van!!!! Shit!

So sorry to hear so many have had a really scary 24 hours. Hope you're warm and safe tonight BrewCakeWine

Kitten, I tried to warn everyone I knew yesterday. Messaged on the street group chat to say I'd gaffer taped the bins shut. They mostly laughed. I was so sad that a lot of damage was unavoidable. Storms like this do not come along often. It was the red warning yesterday that really made me take notice. I'm pleased I did, as I think I've saved myself some clearing up that I'm not physically fit enough to do.

Thanks for all your sage advice and care as always Flowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/11/2021 19:05

Zebra I've come to learn that a lot of people aren't able to discern between the advice that organisations like the met office gives and tabloid rags. They seem to think that because weather forecasting is about probabilities, when something forecast doesn't happen, it means all forecasts are rubbish.
It's frustrating.

Snowing here in Northumberland now, lots f damage and care homes needing generators. Local community is pulling together to provide warmth and shelter. Even just delivering flasks of soup and hot drinks. Lots of property damage and offers of help.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 27/11/2021 19:13

Avoidable, that should have said. Yes, I think it helps to have a Prepper mindset.

ListenLinda · 27/11/2021 21:02

Well I think I will officially become a prepper. Woke up today to a few inch of snow, nothing major, cold and still a bit windy. Took kids to see my parents and got home at lunch time to no power. Decided to decamp to my grandmas with the kids as couldn’t even put the heating on. Pleased to see Northern Powergrid at the end of the road when I set off, it was back on at 6pm.
We seemed to be the only street affected so not sure if it was due to the storm or another reason.

Purpleseaside · 27/11/2021 21:36

I've never experienced wind like last night! I'm on Anglesey and I was kept awake until 6am, double glazed windows felt like they were going to smash through into the bedroom - it was such a roaring sound.

Our cars were left covered in sea spray even though we're high up away from the straits. There were lots of big trees in the middle of the main roads, I hope people were able to stay safe.

Bobbobbobbing · 27/11/2021 22:06

Still without power here, although a lovely northern powergrid man has just come to check up on us as dh is a priority customer due to his cpap machine. We have 2 houses nearby whose gable ends collapsed, one neighbours brick wall collapsed and multiple ones with holes in their roofs or fences down so think we got off lightly. We do have a neighbours tree in our garden but it missed my car so that's fine.

Unescorted · 28/11/2021 06:40

My parents still have no electricity. My dad is on end of life care.... Apparently a "priority case" and they will keep us updated. Not a fucking peep out of Electricity Northwest. We have been driving between my house and theirs all night with hot water bottles and warm drinks. We would have brought him here except we couldn't get the medical team out to dismantle his bed.
If they had not told us to that he was a priority we would have bought a generator to get the heating going. Or indeed that the issue had been logged when we rang the first time - yes we have your village on the list of faults. Or fixing it when the rest of the village was restored because it didn't form part of the village and we should have called earlier.....

nannynick · 28/11/2021 08:47

Last I heard from my mum on East Scotland coast, they have no power still, but did charge the mobile phone by using the car (don't know if they went for a drive or not but maybe, as that would also give them a bit of heat for a while). Gas hob is working, so they can heat water for hot water bottles and are able to cook some food.

Not heard from her yet today. Powertrack is now giving estimate of 6pm for power restoration, but it keeps changing so who knows when it will be back on.

Anyone else in Aberdeenshire - how are things going?
