The mumsnet annual winter weather watch thread

It's slightly mad to start a thread before we've even hit October, but I know that many are quite anxious about the prospects of cold weather this winter, so I'll start it early.

The usual caveats apply : I'm not a professional forecaster. I often get things wrong! Please don't make decisions on what I say - especially ones that have safety or financial implications.

This far out all we can talk about is the balance of probabilities, we can't make predictions. And as we know with probability, the improbable happens!

At some point this thread will start to get confusing as everyone gets excited about christmas weather. I'll start a separate, specific christmas thread about five weeks before Christmas.

Low on details, but the possibility for sleet and snow showers on Thursday and also, perhaps Friday is certainly there. Add in north or north easterly winds gusting to around 30-35mph and it is going to feel rather raw.

It certainly looks nippy - we might get something sleety here (Leicester) but not much else and it'll be mostly over northern hills/Scotland. Looks like it'll be close to freezing/below freezing for a few nights as well, again mostly for the north.

I've just seen how much our temperature's dropped - 3C in 2 hours. It's now a chilly 5.5C

Just had a wee snow shower in Edinburgh

Few snow flurries (not landing) just north of Glasgow. Of course there was one at school run time...

It's like an ice rink where I am in Belfast. I went to leave out some rubbish and nearly went on my arse!

It was like summer last week. DS1 was asking for short sleeve shirts but he will be wearing his scarf and gloves this morning. :o

Snowing in Manchester - started about 15 minutes ago, roofs are white and it's starting to lie on the ground. Flakes are getting smaller though.

I was about to post that too. Sound the klaxon, the Manchester Snow Shield™️ has been breached 😁

We've just had a few snow showers in Essex. It was freezing cold but gorgeous sunshine when I went out for my morning run and now it's grey and gloomy.

Absolutely crazy wind and rain here right now on NE England coast. can only assume we are in a squall.

Today has been an odd weather day. Moments of blue sky and sunshine, next a downpour with some sleet, rain on and off, now this evening wind (and I guess some rain too).

Location: Surrey/Berkshire border.
More tomorrow, or will it be different. Weather app on iPhone is showing rain overnight and then wind tomorrow daytime.

I am just having a clear out of my watched threads and came across this. Only two months ago people were still having snow and now look at us having a little heatwave
