It's slightly mad to start a thread before we've even hit October, but I know that many are quite anxious about the prospects of cold weather this winter, so I'll start it early.

The usual caveats apply : I'm not a professional forecaster. I often get things wrong! Please don't make decisions on what I say - especially ones that have safety or financial implications.

This far out all we can talk about is the balance of probabilities, we can't make predictions. And as we know with probability, the improbable happens!

At some point this thread will start to get confusing as everyone gets excited about christmas weather. I'll start a separate, specific christmas thread about five weeks before Christmas.

Covering of the white stuff in Manchester.
Don't get too excited though, it's all hail!

There's been some embedded snow in the rain down in the south, giving a temporary covering in places.

We got a dusting here.

But a few miles away in Ashton under Lyne there was thunder snow and a lightning strike which set fire to a house roof. Thankfully I don't think there were any serious injuries.

ChickenBeginner · 07/01/2022 21:53

In Devon last night we had incredibly heavy big hail that was so loud it woke us all up. I’ve never known it as loud. It really sounded like actual stones being pelted at the house. A few hours later when I went outside at 8am, marble sized hail stones were still lying on the ground. They’d damaged the chicken enclosure too. Today has just been wet, no more hail or any chance of snow.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2022 16:29

ChickenBeginner I'm going to pm you a question about the hail.

beenrumbled I'm glad to hear there were no injuries.

Has the chance of snow gone now for winter?

WestrayWife · 22/01/2022 11:09

I personally never right off the chance of snow until we've passed the end of April Grin DS (bday 27 April) has been out sledging in past years.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/01/2022 21:56

There is still potential left :) I've not give up yet.

Come on snowflakes, you can do it ❄️

beenrumbled · 25/01/2022 08:06

I'm actually a bit concerned about how dry this month has been (I think) I cant remember the last time we had proper rain. I think it might have been just at the start of the month.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2022 13:30

It has been very dry and in the south the outlook is for it to continue to be dry.

After what seems like an eternity of dull, grey, bleurgh weather, we've got a nice change tonight. It's windy and rainy. I'll take that, I'm just glad for the change.

hoochyhag · 27/01/2022 09:32

Yes, here too. Washing out there today, flapping away Grin a compensation for lack of ❄️

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/01/2022 14:55

In big news on our local weather front: We have a stiff breeze.
/sigh

megletthesecond · 27/01/2022 17:47

There's a lot worse than dull weather. But it's very odd. And I could do with more sun and a little wind to dry my washing quicker.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 29/01/2022 08:14

Crazy stupid winds on the NE coast here again. We have yellow weather warning in place for 3 days in total. Not sure if the direction has been changing, but it's kept me awake pretty much all night.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/01/2022 08:31

www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2022-01-29 warnings that Rainbow mentions.

We did get some sun yesterday. That was nice.

Perihelion · 29/01/2022 10:34

We've got blue skies and mental wind in Edinburgh. Under the amber wind warning.
Never really experienced having my legs blown out from under me before. ShockGrin.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 29/01/2022 11:29

Ah so it's storm Malik. We are only under yellow, but it's like being in the middle of a tornado. Alarms going off everywhere. Bins are all over. Cables outside are sagging from being whipped about. Don't know if they are electricity or phone cables. Getting my back up stores together just in case.

Justmuddlingalong · 29/01/2022 11:40

We're under the amber warning. The wind's having a bit of a lull just now but it's been horrendous this morning. The neighbour's Budda ornament has blown over and been decapitated. I'm sure that's not a good sign. 😕

RainbowZebraWarrior · 29/01/2022 11:47

Ah, I'm actually in the Amber bit. BBC site is shite. Our Metro system has been deemed unsafe to operate, local ferry has been suspended and people have also been told not to travel from Newcastle to Morpeth. More trees down etc. Due to die down in few hours. Sainsbury's food order hasn't turned up and my beehive has gone over in the garden (not currently occupied by bees)

A personal weather station in Ellon went offline at 10:50am, so I don't know what wind levels are like near my mum... they were recording at 30+kmph.
Lots of power cuts being shown on SSE Power Track in North East Scotland.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/01/2022 17:36

Good luck to you all. Thankfully it was only No warning-bog standard windy here. The sun came out and washing is drying.

nannynick · 29/01/2022 19:19

Ellon PWS is back online, data restated 6:34pm. Windspeed around 12km/h. SSE Powertrack showing lots of power cuts remain in NE Scotland.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 30/01/2022 19:52

Hope everyone in Scotland is safe. @OhYouBadBadKitten we aren't too bad today on NE coast of England, but my Mum gets very nervous and was actually crying yesterday as she thought her roof would come off (it actually did in a previous storm, hence her anxiety)

The first thing she said to me this morning was "Have you talked to Kitten? What did she say about this new storm?" Bless her, and you for that matter. As you are an actual legend.
