It's slightly mad to start a thread before we've even hit October, but I know that many are quite anxious about the prospects of cold weather this winter, so I'll start it early.

The usual caveats apply : I'm not a professional forecaster. I often get things wrong! Please don't make decisions on what I say - especially ones that have safety or financial implications.

This far out all we can talk about is the balance of probabilities, we can't make predictions. And as we know with probability, the improbable happens!

At some point this thread will start to get confusing as everyone gets excited about christmas weather. I'll start a separate, specific christmas thread about five weeks before Christmas.

The warnings are based on likelihood of severe impacts.

I'd be surprised if this isn't upgraded based on that, as we have a far longer period of winds which are as high as Eunice was at the peak. The impact isn't going to be any less, I'd think. All local restrictions from Eunice remain in place as well.

HarreePotter · 20/02/2022 15:50

Well the squall was horrendous any one else get hit by it?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/02/2022 16:35

Squall line. I'd be interested in reports as it passes through. I'm out at the moment so might not be able to read them for a bit.

Honestly it was awful. Came belting down out of nowhere. I've got cctv of it but I dunno how to upload a video. The flooding nearby now is spectacular

Doghairismyglitter · 20/02/2022 21:52

Wind seems stronger here in Cornwall tonight than it did during Storm Dudley. Not sure if it’s exacerbated by the fact it’s dark, but sounds ferocious outside, with no “lull” minutes or calm in between gusts either!

Ledkr · 21/02/2022 07:46

It's much worse here in glos than on Friday.
It's been going on most of yesterfay and all.n8ght here.

leesmum · 04/03/2022 18:07

@Gloriasmud @OhYouBadBadKitten and sign of some warmer weather yet Grin

GloriaSmud · 04/03/2022 18:22

@leesmum - Not really - the next week looks about the same with similar temperatures and the chance of overnight frosts. It does at least look settled though, with some sun (which will be nice as I hate day after day of it being just dull!)

leesmum · 05/03/2022 04:34

Thanks for replying, I'm enjoying the lighter evenings we just need a little bit of sunshine now Smile

@OhYouBadBadKitten

Hi, have you any thoughts about the headlines of a Big Freeze & snow at Easter as reported today?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2022 14:09

I think its far too early to be forecasting anything like that! I would ignore the headlines for the time being.

I'm worried about the very cold weather in Ukraine and its borders. The situation is bad enough as it is.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/03/2022 20:17

A thaw would reportedly help ukraine against Russia quite practically, in that mud season will make it much harder for them to go off road.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/03/2022 23:33

the express was forecasting abig freeze. I suspect that means it will be a bit chillier than it has been and somewhere in the uk might see a flurry of snow. they cry wolf a lot.

freezing weather in the Ukraine, good news/ bad news apparently:
tanks can move across frozen ground. but, they run the heaters at night, which uses power and batteries drain quicker. (report on Radio 4) several convoys are having resupply issues.

they reckoned that the Russian conscripts and soldiers would be effected more as the Ukrainians are passionate about defending their land and have more reasons to fight. like defending their families and children

Pascha · 13/03/2022 22:44

Erm, bastion of local news around the country,
Kent Live is stirring for 23rd March Hmm. BBC has 12° and sunny on the same day.

Who do I believe please?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/03/2022 11:51

That is hilarious! They've taken a single extreme output from one model run and made it sound like it is quite likely. It isn't Grin

@OhYouBadBadKitten Do you do requests? Grin
We're having a new CH boiler next Mon/Tues and pos a bit of Wed (south Cheshire) so no heating or HW...
Will my DH...

  1. need to keep active and drink hot tea.
  2. need to find his thermals I know where they are, not sure he does and put his coat on.
  3. need to book a warm room in a travelodge? I'll be staying here with or without hypothermia (cat slave)😹 a little bit of me wants it to be option 3
FantasticFebruary · 14/03/2022 17:33

@OhYouBadBadKitten

I do wish they'd just stop it!! It's why we rely on YOU!!

I need to know if I can look forward to this weather being the start of Spring, or whether I'd better prepare myself for a return to grey gloom & possibly more ice etc.

If only the planet would behave!! (And the news/papers!!)

As far as the Ukrainian weather goes, I hope they've had enough of the very cold weather (snow/ice etc) already to make a big thaw create a VERY difficult situation for the Russians! Without it having a terrible consequence for the Ukrainians!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/03/2022 21:05

I really wouldn't rely on me Grin I have to squish it in between other bits of life! The trend is generally for warmer weather, but it's still going to be a bit nippy, especially first thing in the mornings.

Weds looks a bit yuck but Thursday through to the weekend looks lovely! Sunsets could be quite spectacular if the dust storms in Spain extend northwards.

Pussy temperature looks similar to today/tomorrow so potentially a bit chilly with no heating. Send him away and get yourself a hot water bottle, hot chocolate and a wee spot of something to perk it up.

OYBBK thanks. That sounds like an excellent plan!

FantasticFebruary · 15/03/2022 22:52

@OhYouBadBadKitten

I'd far rather rely on you doing it Inbetween everything else than them doing it full time 🤣🤣

Nippy I'm fine with! I'm just hoping to avoid a full on freeze! Sad we didn't have any noteable snow this year (SE) but I've moved on from that now & just need some blue sky & sunshine, even if nippy!!

megletthesecond · 27/03/2022 18:10

Did you get the nice weather for your boiler pussy?

I'm finishing off a laundry frenzy here in Hampshire. The sun is drying clothes in half a day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/03/2022 18:33

I think we need to revive the winter forecasting side of this thread. Confused Sleet and snow showers are possible down central and eastern parts of England over Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

TokyoSushi · 28/03/2022 09:19

I was just about to say 'what's happening on Thursday OYBBK' but I see you're onto it! (Of course!) @OhYouBadBadKitten
