The mumsnet annual winter weather watch thread

It's slightly mad to start a thread before we've even hit October, but I know that many are quite anxious about the prospects of cold weather this winter, so I'll start it early.

The usual caveats apply : I'm not a professional forecaster. I often get things wrong! Please don't make decisions on what I say - especially ones that have safety or financial implications.

This far out all we can talk about is the balance of probabilities, we can't make predictions. And as we know with probability, the improbable happens!

At some point this thread will start to get confusing as everyone gets excited about christmas weather. I'll start a separate, specific christmas thread about five weeks before Christmas.

You'd be foolish to trust any one model run, especially at the moment Pascha.

Slightly crazy wind here on the NE coast of England. But still 12 degrees.

Record breaking temperatures at the moment. I could work in the garden in a t shirt. But it's also damp here. Impossible to dry anything and I've a flea bite.

We might not quite need to put away the sledges yet though.

I have three roses on my rosebush! It's like June out there 🤔

The change this week will be a bit of a shock.

GFS has come up with a reasonable looking scenario for Tuesday - some snow for parts of Wales and the northern Midlands, then a little rain to snow in the south from the northern edge of the low pressure.
Thereafter potential for snow showers, with a switch back to mild next weekend.

I'm still not seeing model consensus though.

We also need to keep an eye on Friday.

Went for an afternoon walk and had a little sleet. Near Peterhead, NE Scotland.
Been very mild the last few days, now back to more normal temp of around 3-4 degrees.

@OhYouBadBadKitten it’s suddenly very cold here. Few snow warnings but wondering if that’s Cornwall love wanting clicks rather than truth.

Temperature has dropped several degrees as the weather front passed. It's unlikely anywhere will see much in the way of snow away from Scotland. Thursday see some chance of snow for northern hills.

NE Scotland and woke up to a light dusting of snow this morning. Flurries have continued throughout the day but haven't really come to anything.

Cold here on NE coast of England. Due to drop to minus 5 overnight and two snowflakes here too for tomorrow. Then quickly warming to rain later in the day.

Gah. I remember the winter of 78 / 79. We had 6 foot drifts. Will that ever happen again?

Very light 'icing sugar' dusting now on NE coast

-4° bright and sunny this morning in Kent. 6° and raining now

1C, icey roads and pavements and a wee snow shower earlier, in Edinburgh.

We got a few flakes here yesterday, but mostly sleet/rain. Very cold again this morning, the sky looks like we might get a few flakes again - but I'm expecting mostly rain.

Facebook memories are telling me that 12 years ago, from before Christmas til this time in January we had deep snow - kids schools closed for snow - and that I had to walk to Tescos with a rucksack to pick up supplies as they were cancelling deliveries. In Manchester!

My weather apps say snow . My window says no.
Half gutted , half not as got lots to do today.
Bloody cold though
