It's slightly mad to start a thread before we've even hit October, but I know that many are quite anxious about the prospects of cold weather this winter, so I'll start it early.

The usual caveats apply : I'm not a professional forecaster. I often get things wrong! Please don't make decisions on what I say - especially ones that have safety or financial implications.

This far out all we can talk about is the balance of probabilities, we can't make predictions. And as we know with probability, the improbable happens!

At some point this thread will start to get confusing as everyone gets excited about christmas weather. I'll start a separate, specific christmas thread about five weeks before Christmas.

Looks like I might get blown all the way to the office early on Saturday morning!

nannynick · 25/11/2021 15:42

I have warned my mum about the wind but she seems none too worried. She lives on the East Coast of Scotland, having moved there from the mountains earlier this year. She's going shopping on Friday... I have suggested she goes early in the day and then battens down the hatches.
Now that she is living on the coast I doubt I will get any nice snow pictures. Pictures of Rain and Wind perhaps!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/11/2021 15:58

I'd love to be on the coast in a well built house in a storm Grin

We're right on the east coast of Scotland too. I nipped to the shops to get in everything we might need for the next few days. Won't have to go out if it's really wild, but might be tempted to have a walk along the prom if the sea's rough. Then up the road for a hot chocolate.

pinkcattydude · 26/11/2021 09:47

Uknetweather is showing snow for Berkshire on Sat please tell me this year we are finally getting some snowGrin

20FlowerPower · 26/11/2021 10:35

SNOW!! NE of Scotland and we have SNOW!! It is minging and wet though - not lying.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2021 10:36

Warnings have been upgraded to Red for parts of the NE and eastern scotland along coastal areas. Red means danger to life. Please heed.

Oh crikey - thanks for that @OhYouBadBadKitten It is absolutely WILD out there but interestingly the wind hasn't really picked up yet. Poor DH nipped out to the dentist earlier...insisted on walking to get some exercise. Goodness knows what state he'll be in when he returns!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2021 10:47

Snow in the midlands (and thereabouts) will be transient and for most won't settle. It could settle in a few places, especially, but not solely, over high ground.

Thanks Kiteen. I'm absolutely shitting myself as I've secured everything outside, but I'm next to a building site and they don't seem to be giving a toss so I'm possibly at the mercy of their crap flying around.

Just had local news update. I'm right in the red zone.

I'm genuinely thinking of making an excuse to pick DD up early.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2021 11:37

Which side of you is the building site Zebra?

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2021 11:39

Depending on where you are in the red warning area, schools should be sending children home early.

OP posts:
RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/11/2021 12:49

@OhYouBadBadKitten building site is directly to the left of me, but actually they have obviously realised how bad it is so cleared some stuff away. I've brought everything I can in and have gaffer taped my 3 wheelie bin lids shut!

We are right on the coast - Whitley Bay. School is 0.5 miles inland. I'm going to ring the school now and ask them as starting to get quite nasty gusts.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2021 12:59

Can you put your bins in a garage if you have one? (I meant whether it was north, east.... of you Grin but I'm glad they've tidied away. )

The winds will start to get strong mid evening, with the worst arriving for you around 10pm onwards.

Haha Kitten I am a total dingbat!

Building site to the West of me. Just been out and seen that the workmen have gone and theres loads of loose roof tiles (on a pallet on the ground) I'm going to have to move them, otherwise they will be through my bedroom window at 10pm tonight.

School said they weren't sending pupils home early on this occasion. I think that's a mistake as there was a child in the region killed by a tree during high winds just a year ago at school pick up time. They've said I can collect DD if I wish so I think I'm going to do that.

Stay safe everyone!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/11/2021 13:52

I think it's wise to move them, though hopefully they might miss you.

Snow in Braemar - not all that unusual, it's enough to close the snowgates. www.snowgatecameras.co.uk

My mum's area has had 11mm of rain so far today.

Another useful link...
www.wunderground.com/wundermap
A map of weather stations.

In the right hand menu, select Weather Stations, Temperature/Wind

hoochyhooha · 26/11/2021 14:58

Hope your all safe Rainbow Wink hope everyone in that red bit stays safe Shock
Great idea OYBBK just off to put my bins in the garage to stop them from waltzing about...

EdithWeston · 26/11/2021 15:10

I'm no where near the areas of main concern, but the light's going already here, cold gusty windy and just starting to rain.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 26/11/2021 15:21

Just checking in for my annual visit ! Waves to @OhYouBadBadKitten and @GloriaSmud Grin

muldersspeedos · 26/11/2021 16:44

Edge of the peaks here (Manchester/Cheshire side) and hoping for snow. I'm starting to feel Christmassy and snow would be nice. Stay safe everyone.

Delatron · 26/11/2021 17:25

My prediction for us (s.bucks) is a bit of sleet overnight that won’t settle as ground too warm.

Hope all those in the red areas are ok.

garlictwist · 26/11/2021 17:29

We live pretty high up in west Yorks and had a dusting last night.
