First met office warnings for the month are
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-02-03 for Scotland. Gusts up to 80mph (perhaps more in isolated spots) for many.

In general it looks like it could be quite a stormy month with a lot of potential showing from the 9th onwards. Might be worth looking at your fences in the south before then Wink

I'd ignore hour by hour updates on the app, those automated outputs aren't terribly reliable.

I don't think we will get any red warnings, but it does look pretty serious tonight with ECMWF showing much of southern england and the midlands looking to get gusts over 70mph, including central London. I've not seen a map like that for years.

I really hope it downgrades.

Me too!!

cheninblanc · 07/02/2020 22:21

We are south east, fairly rural but only half hour from London, my daughters go to school in Dartford (last week there they are moving to village school) but... I've already told them to check traffic app Monday morning as if any issues we're having a lie in and going in later! They get a train so let's see. Traffic is an hour to get to school anyway never mind a storm!!

TokyoSushi · 07/02/2020 22:23

It's getting windy here already in Cheshire, yikes!

AmelieTaylor · 07/02/2020 22:49

The school hasn’t cancelled matches tomorrow, so about 1000 kids out on coaches 1-2 hours away from school in all directions 🙁

Titsywoo · 07/02/2020 23:20

Apparently all the royal parks in london will be closed on Sunday. Is that standard for a storm i wonder?

Justmuddlingalong · 07/02/2020 23:30

Going to put the garden chairs away in the morning, move the wheelie bins and have a scoot round to see what else might take flight when it all kicks off. I'm planning on getting the washing out on the line first thing. Forecast for the morning is windy, but dry and sunny. Looks like a 4 pegger at least.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/02/2020 00:02

It's not unprecedented Titsy, but it is unusual.
The London winter 10k has been cancelled.

Just a blatant placemark waves to OYBBK and Gloria

Erismorn · 08/02/2020 04:26

So... If this is accurate (and the BBC seem to normally be the most accurate for our little corner of the SE) bit of battening down of hatches needed here tomorrow. Might put some extra weight on the trampoline fortifications and stash the lighter garden table away. I'm going to assume we will get a powercut and plan accordingly.

Sorry to but in but can someone help? I’m south east, not far from the coast. I have a 10 foot trampoline, I’ve taken off the net and there are 15kg sand bags on each of the 3 legs. Iv wedged it up against the femch (garden is small, house about 2 metres behind it, garage wall on one side fence the other) will it be ok?? I can’t undo the screws to take the legs of the net off so I can’t turn it upside down and have no one to help. Will it be ok? Anything else I can do? I don’t want to take all the springs off as there is no way I will ever get them back on.

Frouby · 08/02/2020 08:19

Placemarking

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/02/2020 08:32

Wonderingwhyme I do t think you could do better than that. Well done :)

The models have not downgraded. They have if anything shown the area of very high winds to be even further spread out. The screenshot is one model prediction for tomorrow at 3pm.

It looks quite possible that within that a squall line could develop. This could bring even more intense rainfall and thunder, hail. Look out for any extra intensive damage if one occurs.

It is looking serious tomorrow. Don't take it lightly.

I'm going to ask mn to change the name of this thread.

Wonderingwhyme · 08/02/2020 08:39

@OhYouBadBadKitten thanks, are you sure? These storms seem to get more frequent and faster wind speeds that is like to do away with the trampoline but dc love it and garden is too small for anything else they can get physical on. I’m not too concerned about it breaking, I’m more worried about it flying around and damaging things or flying over the fence etc. Iv never seen it lift off the ground at all, not a bit. I can’t anchor it due to the ground it is on.

One of my dc is autistic and hates the wind. Like really hates it. I’m dreading tomorrow. It makes horrible noise down the chimney.... my weather app says 55 mph which isn’t what the news says?

Erismorn · 08/02/2020 09:10

Thanks OYBBK. Definitely some storm prep to do today then.

DawnMumsnet · 08/02/2020 09:29

Hello, just letting you know that we've changed the title of the thread, as requested.

Thanks so much for keeping us all so well informed, OYBBK. Flowers

And batten down the hatches, everyone.

Brew
hennyspennys · 08/02/2020 09:31

@madisonavenue It's such a concern isn't it? I wonder if they are driving to the same place in the Midlands, stranger things have happened.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 08/02/2020 09:34

Definitely battening down the hatches here on the south west Wales coast... As tempting as it is to head out and get some storm pictures, I think we'll have a pyjama day instead 😁

I posted on chat and got a telling off for being ridiculous about worrying about driving 30 mins each direction to go to work tomorrow. I'm just south of midlands. The BBC weather app is saying yellow warning and 50 to 60 mph winds now. I was going with conceding I was being an ott worrier but your thread is making me think otherwise now!

dementedma · 08/02/2020 09:38

Getting windy here in Central Scotland, but still fairly bright. Might risk pegging out some washing for a bit. Looks like it’s going to be wild tomorrow though. I was planning a trip to the beach to see if the high tides had thrown up any treasures (sea glass) so might have to abandon that plan.

SaffyWall · 08/02/2020 09:39

I'm supposed to be flying Leeds - Amsterdam tomorrow afternoon. I guess it's unlikely that the flights will be taking off. I don't have much experience of this though - really not sure what to do!

I'm not sure our fence will last the weekend either!

Makinglists · 08/02/2020 09:42

In plymouth here it's beautiful and sunny. 40 mins ago it was perfectly still but a light breeze has just got up. Feels like spring at the moment.

woodencoffeetable · 08/02/2020 09:43

saffy check with the airline tomorrow morning. ime they sometimes decide quite ad-hoc if they can go ahead or not.

Keynote1 · 08/02/2020 09:43

I have told family probably best to cancel event tomorrow but they all think I am going on and are getting annoyed with me. We have to drive 30 mins to the event and then get home after so I am terrified but if it goes ahead we will gave to go as it's for my granddaughter.

borntobequiet · 08/02/2020 09:43

High winds really bother me. I live directly under a very old and fragile roof...
And I don’t want any snow. I’ll repeat. I DON’T WANT ANY SNOW.
Thanks.
