Storm Ciara forecasts and reports

First met office warnings for the month are
www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?date=2020-02-03 for Scotland. Gusts up to 80mph (perhaps more in isolated spots) for many.

In general it looks like it could be quite a stormy month with a lot of potential showing from the 9th onwards. Might be worth looking at your fences in the south before then Wink

SSEN have put their power network on a yellow alert for both Scotland and their part of southern rEngland.

I would normally at this point try and give some guidance as to when people might travel safely if they have to on Sunday, but I don't feel as if I can do that this time. Gales Saturday afternoon in the NW and Scotland and by the early hours everyone will be affected right through daylight hours across the UK on Sunday. Evening will be better than morning though.

Basically, if you absolutely have to travel on Sunday, please check relevant twitter accounts - Highways England is good for those there, also local radio stations. Keep an eye on any rail announcements for line closures.

I think a lot of trees will come down - it's been a while for some areas since they've seen such a sustained gale.

As well as strong winds, torrential rain and hail are probable, some snow in Scotland.

Winds look to remain strong through the first half of the week. Snow risk - uncertain.

I'm working Sunday daytime. Could be an interesting day. North Hampshire/Surrey area so quite a lot of trees. Only a 4 mile drive from home but if there is tree damage that could take a while. Will see how it goes.

cheninblanc · 07/02/2020 09:15

I'm going to put the garden chairs away today, get the torches out and plan nothing for Sunday!

Igneococcus · 07/02/2020 10:09

Our wind forecast has just been upgraded to 61 mph for Sunday for a few hours, eeeek.

Makinglists · 07/02/2020 11:10

Long term lurker here - just seen the met office have upgraded the warning to amber for the SE coast on Sunday.

Notmyideamovingon · 07/02/2020 11:29

I've booked a hotel near Harry potter studios. Hopefully winds will be dying downby the time we finish

Titsywoo · 07/02/2020 11:56

Such a beautiful day here in Surrey! Clearly very much the calm before the storm...

I'm going to bring the wheelie bins in tomorrow afternoon and will pop to the allotment later to make sure everything is weighed down. Sadly can't vouch for my neighbours so will have to see how my new greenhouse fares - eek!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2020 12:26

It is a gorgeous day here too.
I don't really have much to add at this point. In some ways it's easy to forecast - weather will range from very windy to extremely windy with heavy rain for several hours for pretty much everyone. Added hail a bonus for some.

Ugh, the ECMWF model is forecasting 70mph gusts for central London. That's really unusual. Let's hope it's over egging things.

I hope so or you'll find that your Quidditch match is fairly eventful. Have you got stablisers on your broomstick?

Runwayqueen · 07/02/2020 20:08

I work at an airport, is it wrong that I am relived I'm off duty on Sunday? I will be watching the metars and tafs with interest though

woodencoffeetable · 07/02/2020 20:13

we've been told to work from home on monday as widespread train/travel disruptions are expected.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2020 20:16

That will be very interesting Runway!

I've got a meeting in London on Monday.. I've not timed things terribly well really. I'm almost contemplating just staying in London overnight on Sunday rather than facing disrupted journeys both ways.

My DD has to drive from the north to the Midlands on Sunday, she can't avoid it so I'm feeling quite concerned.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/02/2020 20:23

I think my main concern would be high sided vehicles, so it's good that it's on a Sunday

I am very worried, particularly after reading the weather forums. My granddaughter is in a show on Sunday afternoon which apparently will NOT be cancelled. 10 mile journey to get there when the winds seem to be at their worst. Would think that when travelling with children is involved the organisers would cancel or am I being OTT?

Smelborp · 07/02/2020 20:52

Near us there’s a large demolition on Sunday morning of a cooling tower. That’ll be interesting.

hennyspennys · 07/02/2020 20:58

I hadn't thought of that OYBBK, thanks for the reassurance.

Ds has cancelled a 30k hike on Sunday due to the forecast for which I shall be forever grateful

However I need to get from the Cotswolds to Loughborough for mid morning with dd - am I mad even contemplating going? Will make the decision on Sunday morning but was wondering what others thought? Thanks

Titsywoo · 07/02/2020 21:20

Hmm my Dad has a hip replacement op on Monday morning in London and has to get there from the south coast.

Titsywoo · 07/02/2020 21:29

It's strange on metoffice - where I am the wind gusts are showing as up to 63mph and wind speed of 34mph. About 6 miles away it's showing as 59mph gusts and 27mph wind speed yet they are in an amber area and we are in yellow?

Notmyideamovingon · 07/02/2020 21:35

Grin the big worry is that we'll get there and they'll be closed due to staff not making it there or the warning goes red. That won't happen oybbk? Will it???

MadisonAvenue · 07/02/2020 21:40

hennyspennys I'll join you in worrying. My son has to drive from Cornwall to the Midlands on Sunday and I can't stop thinking about it.
