:)

First proper potential for the winter on Friday - if you live in the Peak district and parts of Scotland. Grin

It will Kitten The marathon route was supposed to go up higher, but they changed that to 2 laps of the half marathon. The marathon was today so now we're looking forward to wading through mud, mud and more mud. Even more so after a few hundred people have covered the route twice today.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/11/2019 20:21

oh no! gruesome! I got out today and the mud was bonkers.
Good luck Confused

Tomorrow night and into Tuesday morning is showing temps of -1 here ! In the south east of England

readyforsunshine · 18/11/2019 08:07

Checking in for the annual run up to Christmas! Thanks so much Gloria & Kitten, how funny that this is a favourite thread for so many of us😀

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/11/2019 08:31

Yes it’s looks chuffing chilly the next 2 mornings in the midlands as well Emma with the added bonus of fog tomorrow, so not even a sunny crisp school run.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/11/2019 10:18

Well, interesting model developments today, with some GEFS members going for a SSW event in the next couple of weeks.

SSWs have been responsible for some of our notable snow events. So this is fascinating! especially the timing...

It's not a given though, so all eyes on the models.

Where I am at least a good fall of snow in early- mid December isn’t unheard of anymore, not hugely common but I can think of a least 5 occasions since 2009.

Mum’s due down again the last weekend of November so if it could avoid then & the weekend of the 7th I’d be very grateful Wink (having a night away with Dh on the 8th/9th, first time since dc3(6) was born).

PointlessUsername · 18/11/2019 14:18

If the sudden stratospheric warming were to happen, where would get snow?.. all of the uk or just some parts?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/11/2019 17:14

The excitement in them is that they can split the polar vortex and we end up with polar air displacing south. However, if this happens, where the displacement occurs is another key to who and where gets the really cold weather.

It's more about getting deep cold though, rather than lots of snow, though the two can happen together.

Placemarking as this thread is one of my favourite things about Christmas!

GloriaSmud · 18/11/2019 18:48

Bit of fun here - Netweather's Santa Shaker is back along with their Christmas forecast.

Winter thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook.

PointlessUsername · 18/11/2019 19:43

OYBBk. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for some snow Grin

Perihelion · 18/11/2019 20:15

Hard frost on the car to scrape off at 5.20 this morning ( thank you, DD for your commitment to your morning training Hmm ).
I stupidly tried the rubbing a plastic bag of warm water method, I'd seen kicking around Facebook, doesn't work, well it melted the ice, but immediately refroze.
Frost hasn't melted in the shade all day.

dementedma · 18/11/2019 20:17

Cold here in Fife. A hard frost already. Going to be a cold night

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 18/11/2019 20:24

Cold and frosty here too and the children are hoping to see some snow soon. It's been a beautiful clear and sunny day here. We walked to and from school as it was so nice. We've relied on the bus far too much lately as it's been so wet and everyone has been ill more than once. Fingers crossed for more clear sunny days before snow on Christmas Eve please. But not between here and Wiltshire before 3pm and then the roads to clear on Boxing Day so my mum is not affected by the weather. Or even better, snow heavily on the night of the 23rd so she can't go and she spends Christmas with us Grin

nannynick · 18/11/2019 22:27

Expecting to scrape the car tomorrow in West Surrey/Berkshire border. 1 degree when i arrived home this evening around 10:15pm. Will need to get used to frosty mornings.

beenrumbled · 19/11/2019 07:06

Hard frost here this morning, but a beautiful sunrise.

Freezing fog predicted for the route DH has to take to work, so he is not looking forward to his commute.

ClashCityRocker · 19/11/2019 07:32

According to my phone we're at minus four! Frosty and clear, a beautiful morning her in York.

I'm at the stage where I still enjoy the cold - come January I will be sick of it I'm sure, if it hangs about.

I remember a couple of Christmasses ago it was really quite mild and felt all wrong.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/11/2019 07:54

We got down to -3C here.

One of yesterday's GFS runs showed a minor SSW. Interesting. Something may be up. But at the moment it is still a case of 'interesting, but nothing more'. That is two models playing with the ide?

In the mean time, a week mostly of calm, some hill snow in Scotland. Much drier in the Midlands and northern England but wetter in the SW. Thursday in a weeks time we start to see more potential for active weather again.

So for those who can, take a breather!

Zero here and beautiful Smile

NemophilistRebel · 19/11/2019 08:32

Is so beautiful here. Not often in the SE we get hard white frosts in November

Currently -1 at 8:30am.

Things had started to freeze last night by 9:30pm!

Perihelion · 19/11/2019 12:59

-5.5C overnight in Edinburgh. Beautiful sunrise and circles of frosty leaves on the ground around trees as there's been no wind.
Now a wee bit warmer than yesterday at 1C.

IrenetheQuaint · 20/11/2019 08:06

I had to get the train up from London to Yorkshire first thing yesterday and the frost and freezing fog outside (from London onwards - rare at this time of year) was incredibly beautiful and atmospheric.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/11/2019 20:37

That sounds gorgeous.

So we have some interesting models showing up for the end of next week! ECMWF introduces a Greenland High, which can help block the atlantic and allow cold to move in. It's a pretty exciting chart. Of course we don't know if it's just having a fantasy moment. GFS looks similar but collapses the high rapidly.

Ummmm

I was really hoping the milder temps forecast for London next week were true?
