I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

I must stress the chances of snow in the south this weekend remain low, chances are fairly high for Scottish and Welsh hills. Today's model run looks drier, decreasing the risk. Let's see what it looks like in the next couple of runs.

I'm really looking forward to some cold weather. Love all the seasons but winter gives me the happys!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 23/10/2018 12:05

Ah bugger. My Mum's in with a chance of getting some (v rural Wales) but is meant to be coming down on Saturday for a visit & she's ultra cautious if snow is forecast. I'll keep quiet about it & hope if she gets any it's only the smallest amount as the dc are really looking forward to seeing her.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/10/2018 18:59

No point in worrying her unnecessarily :)

Looks likes Saturday's showers could be quite lively with some hail and thunder chucked in. Still the small possibility of wet snow being thrown in the mix even in the SE, though I don't expect it to settle at all.

Ooo thanks OYBBK good to be aware of the possibility of cold weather. Don't think I've worn a coat for weeks, must track it down :)

RhythmNBooze · 23/10/2018 20:01

Ooh we're off to visit ds in Durham on Saturday/Sunday. Any idea of what we can expect weather wise?

gttia · 24/10/2018 08:12

My daughter's are due to travel euston to Preston on Saturday I hope it's not disrupted as we are heading off on Euro star!

InMySpareTime · 24/10/2018 09:52

@gttia surely Preston to Euston for the Eurostar, it doesn't go all the way to the North.

GloriaSmud · 24/10/2018 11:07

RhythmNBooze ~ it looks chilly. As OYBBK says any showers could be thundery and I think in those showers, if the temperature drops, there could be some wintry stuff in them so you might see something of a wintry nature.

Today's thoughts from netweather and TheWeatherOutlook.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/10/2018 17:09

It's going to be a lot of nowcasting I think on Saturday along the east coast, most people won't see anything, but wintry showers could develop where any troughs form.

GFS is still showing the potential (stressing the word potential!) for a tiny little bit of snow fall in the south on Saturday.

Perihelion · 26/10/2018 08:27

Unlikely to see snow in Edinburgh, but I think today's dog walk requires my winter coat and gloves.
Would love to see some more thunder snow this winter..... actually would be happy to have a re-run of last winter Grin

NewToCats · 26/10/2018 08:57

Yipee ! Snow !
Can barely contain my excitement. Can't wait !

GloriaSmud · 26/10/2018 09:31

Perihelion ~ Grin but noooooooo, not a re-run of last winter. A little snow is OK, lasting a day or so but any longer.....

GloriaSmud · 26/10/2018 09:34

Todays thoughts from Netweather and TheWeatherOutlook.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/10/2018 10:21

Looking at the direction of the wind on the met office, I'm not sure that showers will really penetrate inland in the east tomorrow.

If we are going to have plenty of snow this winter, then please let it be in December andJanuary, not at the end of Feb into March this time round. Spring was so late!

Plus the snow watch threads took us both about a hundred thousand hours to keep up with! Grin

For some reason, Black Adder kept coming into my head this morning on the train station platform - I think it was something to do with "oh dear god this wind is Baltic....I need a cunning plan to find my hat/gloves....Baldrick!!!!" kinda thing....

I may also be sleep deprived which was only adding to it.

Car said 5.5 degrees, but there was a definite wind chill going on.

And DD went to school wearing shorts. Hmm
Admittedly, agreed to put on a hoodie on top - but wearing short sports shorts (so short and absolutely no warmth to them! She has plenty of longer ones that are warmer). Oh to still be young and never feel the cold.....

GloriaSmud · 26/10/2018 12:32

Snow and Ice weather warnings for later today into tomorrow morning.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/10/2018 12:58

Are they the first ones of the season? I think they might be.

brrr.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 26/10/2018 14:21

I think they are, OYBBK.
The view from Snowdon looks similar to when we went up there in July...only with more wind....and snow (I think we chose the one day in the whole summer when it rained/drizzled all the way to the top. We could see all of 5.....ft in front of us!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/10/2018 15:50

It's such a fickle place Gloria! When we went up once it was lovely on the way up. Fog all the way down.

Pretty normal for snowdon Grin it's not to be underestimated!

hoochymama1 · 26/10/2018 16:28

I love this thread Smile Step on board the weather banter bus Grin
It feels a bit sharp here, but seasonal. Found my coat thank goodness Wink
We'll be ok as long as you don't polish your sledge Gloria Smile

platesandflowers · 26/10/2018 16:30

We had snow on Wednesday but it didn't settle where we are. The ski areas are all open now though.

We're meant to get an ice storm tomorrow so there goes the power for a few days.

Too early this year.
