I know it will seem quite crackers to start this when the weekend has been so lovely, but we are starting to get some model consistency on GFS for the potential for snow Friday night into Saturday as a northerly plunge looks set to take place.

Primary risk areas are obviously for hillier parts of Scotland and also Wales, but higher ground in the south and south east including over dartmoor and down the east coast may also see some sleet or wet snow.

I agree with Gloria, I think that anywhere down the eastern side could see some snow flakes by towards the end of next week and they could penetrate quite far inland, but I don't foresee anything disruptive next week at all. The following weekend and week, well, it's something to keep a bit of an eye on.

not Sussex specifically I hasten to add, I mean something to keep an eye on generally.

Snow and wind
There my least favorite kinds of weather

I'd like summer back 😀😀

birdsofafeather · 15/11/2018 14:17

Also we are moving on the 23rd November so really don't need any disruption to road travel

GloriaSmud · 15/11/2018 19:11

TheWeatherOutlook's latest thoughts on Winter ~ they're still going for, "an elevated chance of it being colder (or possibly much colder) than average."

sadsadsady · 15/11/2018 19:50

A couple of snowflakes on the chickens. Meant to start properly as 1am. Ds is going to go mental when he wakes up.

birdsofafeather · 15/11/2018 19:51

Where are you :O

sadsadsady · 15/11/2018 20:33

Maine!

PyeWackets · 16/11/2018 07:26

I am really looking forward to some colder weather, maybe some frosty mornings. Snow would be wonderful but any wintry weather is welcome, bloody luffs winter.

sadsadsady · 16/11/2018 12:53

I'd say we have five inches already but it's so windy it's hard to tell. Ugh. Poor Dh has to work outside today and the wind must be 40 mph.

plaidlife · 16/11/2018 15:20

Illinois has started its snow season. We had some yesterday but it didn't lie in the city and we are due some tonight. I've moved into my fluffy boots for the season.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 16/11/2018 15:26

High winds and some snow in Western Canada overnight. Not much though, just a couple of cm

Nov has been v mild here so far - The easterners are getting it at the moment.

gotmybigbootson · 16/11/2018 17:48

I've already shovelled this porch and table twice today. Knackered!

Nice snow pictures, gotmybigbootson ~ got a nice amount there!

Over this side of the world, low water levels at the Ladybower reservoir have revealed an abandoned village that was lost when they flooded the valley.

AlpacaLypse · 17/11/2018 09:17

You two tend to be pretty accurate... I'll keep watching to make sure I get the shovel into the car in good time!

Latest Outlook from the Metoffice. Could probably be summed up, 'it's getting colder and it might snow.'

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days

UK Outlook for Thursday 22 Nov 2018 to Saturday 1 Dec 2018:
Throughout this period, the winds look likely to blow in from the east, across continental Europe. This will often bring cloudy skies, with the best of any sunshine in western areas. There is also the likelihood of some showers, these most frequent in eastern parts, but perhaps becoming more widespread and persistent at times. With a chill in the air, there is scope for some sleet or snow, but this will most likely be restricted to the hills. The breeze will make for a marked wind chill at times in the south. With lighter winds further north, and under clear skies at night, overnight frosts are likely to become more common. There is also a small chance of even colder conditions going into early December, in northerly winds.

UK Outlook for Sunday 2 Dec 2018 to Sunday 16 Dec 2018:
Through this period, there may be a continuation of the cold and mainly settled conditions for much of the UK, with some showers coming in from the east. However, there is a chance that during early December the weather pattern may change, with fronts moving in from the west across the Atlantic. This would bring longer spells of rain, interspersed with brighter, showery interludes, and it would also become less cold. However, even if the change does happen, it won't be long before we have more settled conditions again, perhaps by the middle of December. This would mean a return to the colder conditions with overnight frost and fog.

GloriaSmud · 17/11/2018 12:36

Some thoughts from Netweather and TheWeatherOutlook.

Perihelion · 17/11/2018 23:33

In an echo of last winter, looks like Edinburgh might see some snow/sleet on Tuesday. ( Grin )
Tuesdays seemed to get more snow than the other days of the week. Several times I drove to the ice rink in snow, while wondering if I could fit we wee sledge in, on the way home ( clearly I love frozen water activities )

GloriaSmud · 18/11/2018 09:38

Latest thoughts from the metoffice. It's interesting to note that they think that there'll be occasional (warmer) fronts moving in from the west at times but these conditions won't last long and the weather will return to cold/settled fairly quickly.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:
Mostly fine in the northwest on Tuesday. Otherwise rather unsettled and cold, with showery outbreaks of rain, especially in the south and east. Some hill snow, and icy patches overnight.

GFS shows a little hill snow in parts of Wales (especially southern) and just possibly a little sleet/wet snow on higher ground over the Sw moors and Cotswolds on Tuesday into Wednesday.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/11/2018 22:01

There have been a few snow showers in the Brecon Beacons this evening. There will probably be more tomorrow in the hills of south Wales and also parts of Scotland.

Maybe some snow showers tomorrow afternoon and evening for those in the Cotswolds and perhaps the Surrey hills and various other areas in the central southern and south midlands regions. I don't expect there will be any disruption as I don't think it will settle too much.

Lots of maybes and perhaps, but it's early in the season and conditions are marginal.

OP posts:
gotmybigbootson · 19/11/2018 22:07

9-15cm predicted here for tomorrow. Ughhhhhhhhhhhh! Means ds's Thanksgiving and birthday parties will probably get cancelled and none of his birthday presents will turn up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/11/2018 08:38

This is last nights model run for today. Pink is snow. Take it with a massive pinch of salt (you probably won't need it for gritting away from Welsh mountains) but it still shows the potential for some wintry precipitation this afternoon and evening.

Snow watch!
OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/11/2018 08:40

Potential for some ice to form overnight in central and higher rural areas after the fronts clear.

Ladies, what do you think are the chances of serious snow in the Newcastle area on Friday?

(I am trying to figure out if DH is serious about the likelihood of him being stranded there overnight, and not getting home for the PTA Christmas Social - or just making excuses!!). He goes something like fly to Birmingham, then trains to London, Telford, Newcastle from tomorrow to Friday, and should be flying home Friday night.
