To complement the Summer weather thread.

Tomorrow could see some thunderstorms in places across England, but by tomorrow evening, the main area of risk appears to be in the central southern areas (revised forecast from earlier) , where frequent lightning and small hail could form in any storms that evolve.

SeaLions ~ given that there is an Amber warning, I'd wait until tomorrow if you can. I think a lot of storms will get going as we head into the evening and overnight.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/05/2018 17:47

The amber warning has only just started and the nature of thunderstorms is that some places get deluges while others close by (even just a mile down the road) stay bone dry. Its impossible to say exactly where those places will be.

The coming storms/warning areas are one of the main headlines on the BBC website.

RatOnnaStick · 31/05/2018 17:56

The storms in northern France have tended to hug the French coastline and disappear or head off to the north sea so far today. Only a handful of strikes have come anywhere near the shore.

Is that likely to keep happening or will anything actually make it across the channel?

Ardant · 31/05/2018 18:08

Bloody weather. Come on storms!

brizzledrizzle · 31/05/2018 18:09

If anything it's got more muggy here than before, I'd forgotten how oppressive it can be in the city when it's hot.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 31/05/2018 18:09

I cancelled the gardener today for no reason What a first world problem!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 31/05/2018 18:22

brizzle you have to laugh at the irony of the name "Accuweather", don't you? 😂

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/05/2018 18:23

With details of flooding that has already occurred Gloria.

So far a lot of the storms have been killed off by the channel, but it seems that more will make it over I think, or at least more will form over night in the same air mass.

If I believe Google weather and I'm not sure I do, that's our lot for thunderstorms in London for the next 10 days. Hooray! 😎

nannynick · 31/05/2018 18:33

Pouring down now in Guildford area. Just waiting for the thunder and lightning.

Papergirl1968 · 31/05/2018 18:48

Nothing here in the West Midlands but I can see from that lightning map, which I find weirdly fascinating, that there are storms in the Cotswolds about 40 miles south of us and in Wales about 60 miles west of us. It seems to be a bit less humid than it was earlier.

Furrycushion · 31/05/2018 18:52

Can one of the resident experts explain why the forecasts (I usually look at BBC, Met Office & the weather channel) have been so wildly inaccurate this week?

Processedpea · 31/05/2018 18:57

Agreed so many outdoor events were cancelled today and it's been lovely in n London

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/05/2018 18:58

Any automated output is always suspect, especially when situations like this come down to a few miles here or there. So we can talk about probability of storms happening, but not their exact location. Models may 'guess' at certain locations, but actually how storms initiate and exactly where is finely balanced.

Yes, it is a nightmare to forecast. I took a chance on Tuesday, we ended up under a stream of heavy showers and practically drowned. 15 miles away at home it was dry all day.

Papergirl1968 · 31/05/2018 19:03

Ohhh, they’re getting closer - strikes in Herefordshire and Shropshire now. Starting to feel a little nervous...

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 31/05/2018 19:04

It was bad here on Tuesday too, and in Milton Keynes. I got drowned on the way to Sainsbury's, my aunt, my DC and my aunt's 2 dogs all got drowned going for their evening walk. 😭

lovestea · 31/05/2018 20:47

Some thunder, but also literally hurling it down here in Oxford. It is almost like a tropical storm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/05/2018 21:14

It looks quite dramatic on the lightning detector.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/05/2018 21:20

Looks like Oxford really is getting drenched!

OP posts:
lovestea · 31/05/2018 21:21

It is OYBBK! Lots of lightning. Raining full pelt which then almost stops but comes back again. Same with the lightning and thunder.
Cat is most fed up. I love it. So dramatic.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/05/2018 21:23

More tomorrow too, but I don't think as dramatic as today.

lovestea · 31/05/2018 21:23

River Thames will be very swollen tomorrow and my allotment will be very boggy!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/05/2018 21:24

x post. Perhaps not epic amounts in Oxford tomorrow, hopefully, I think the risk shifts a little east.

If you get chance to estimate how much rain has fallen I'd be interested!

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/05/2018 21:29

I've found one reading of 33mm of rain so far in Oxford, but I'm not sure over what time period.
