I'm dreading this

Loueytb3 · 15/03/2018 16:26

FFS! The last snow we had meant my half marathon was cancelled. I am due to run a 20 mile race on Sunday (W London) which starts at 9am and I have to drive there from the Chilterns. Some of the race is on main roads, some of it is on ungritted side roads. What chance is there that the forecast is wrong??

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 15/03/2018 16:49

Oh bugger. DD has her first ever school trip on Monday (in NE England). Is it going to be cancelled or might the snow melt by Sunday evening? (PS thank you OYBBK and Gloria for all your brilliant analysis and advice! I'm following your Russian thread with interest too, OYBBK)

GloriaSmud · 15/03/2018 16:55

whojamaflip ~ I think at this stage, I'd consider bookmarking a couple of hotels and maybe make a decision tomorrow. A few weather models are showing quite a wintry picture but it's a difficult to give exact amounts for places.

GloriaSmud · 15/03/2018 17:04

Louey ~ might have to prepare for another cancellation. It isn't just snow, it's ice as well which organisers will have to consider.

DuPain ~ hard to say. I don't think there'll be any snow melt as it's going to be so cold. But if the NE gets loads of snow, it might more depend on how well roads get cleared/gritted as to whether your DDs school trip goes ahead.

SpringNowPlease2018 · 15/03/2018 17:15

Kitten "My current scientific analysis - it's a 6 on the argh scale."

I am new to the argh scale Smile

is that "minor disruption" or something?

booface · 15/03/2018 18:18

My son is in the school air force cadets and they are camping out Fri and Sat, aghhhhh! But they are pretty sensible and there is a plan B should the weather be just too bad. Rather them than me though! I will be tucked up by my log burner with the weekend papers I hope!

coughingbean · 15/03/2018 18:37

I'm with springnow, how bad is 6 on the argh scale?!
😀

DazzlingMilton · 15/03/2018 18:46

If there’s another snow day from school I will fucking scream. Everywhere round here closed for two days last time, as it turns out needlessly. My kids were bouncing off the walls by the end of it and the thought of it happening again makes me want to go and jump off a tall building.

OublietteBravo · 15/03/2018 18:58

I'm not familiar with the argh scale. Are high numbers good or bad? Is it linear or logarithmic? We need to know!

Looks like I'm in the warning areas for Saturday and Sunday. Hmm. We'll see (it doesn't tend to snow much in Bedford).

NorthernLurker · 15/03/2018 19:18

Bugger. Better take dh's car which has snow mode then!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/03/2018 19:22

6 on the argh scale doesn’t sound good.

It’s not looking good for the extra work day we’ve added on Sunday to clear the backlog from the day we lost due to snowmageddon is it?

BestIsWest · 15/03/2018 19:30

Looks like it’s going to miss us in Swansea again. Yellow warnings either side of us.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2018 20:12

sorry, just finished working.

6 is minor disruption, or early warning of possible moderate disruption.

I've not decided the scale of the warning system yet, maybe we need to plot my state of arghness against disruption over time and see if we can formalise the scale. Unfortunately it's also event related so for whojam it's probably a 7.5 and for anyone who fancies a long weekend in the house I'd rate it at a 4 purely in case of milk panic.

I'm upping it to a 6.5 for around the Thames estuary at present. High numbers are bad. If I say it's 9.5 then it's a bunker yourself in job.

whojam, I agree with Gloria, I'd book a cancellable hotel room and keep a really close eye on things. For something like that, although I think you will be ok, I wouldn't like the stress of worrying about it.

DuPain, the issue is that ice could be a problem over night on Sunday night.

MrsKCastle · 15/03/2018 20:15

Nooo! My school has lost 5 days to snow this year, I have never known another year like it. We absolutely can't lost any more days.
I think I'm going to do a fingers-in-ears I'm -not-listening and just hope it all goes away!

coughingbean · 15/03/2018 20:22

I definitely like the idea of plotting an argh scale!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2018 20:36

A couple of models have between a fair bit and a lot of snow from the peak district upwards through the central spine.

InMySpareTime · 15/03/2018 20:39

Stay safe folks!

Is this really spring?! Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2018 20:40

The frogs in my garden think so Confused

PestoSurfissimos · 15/03/2018 20:42

Oh god, I’m going to have to put the tortoises away again, aren’t I?

Such a shame, they have been enjoying basking in the garden since they came out of hibernation at the weekend

whyistherumgone · 15/03/2018 20:43

Hi all hope you're keeping safe and sane. Looks like we're in for a dusting this weekend in Essex, really hoping that's all it is.
More concerned about the weekend after as we're supposed to be heading to the lake district, hoping it's not too bad there by then.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/03/2018 20:57

Poor tortoises! They will be saying to each other 'blimey that year went quick!'.

We're meant to be doing Hampshire to Oxford for a day out on Saturday. I really hope I don't have to cancel, the dc's are a nightmare unless they're out the house and occupied at the moment.
