Usual disclaimer - Gloria and I are amateurs, fitting this in round our home and work lives. We do our best, we sometimes get things wrong! Please don't make important decisions based on what we say, always refer to the met office website first.

Ha ha Gertrude ...according to the radar of doom it is now about 3 miles away...... HELP! SAVE MEEEEE!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2018 12:41

Remember the red warning doesn't start until 3pm.

Netweather predicted 3pm for our snow drop. We'll go from nothing to red in a very short period of time.

Yet more coming down in South Norfolk. I'm starting to feel a little besieged now, as it's so windy and freezing I don't even want to take DS out to play in it (he has eczema on his face so cold winds are bad news). Hoping it stops soon as I was planning on getting into all my warm gear and walking to the village in the hope of getting milk while DS naps (DH is at home too) - the lorry went past this morning so I think they must have had a delivery!

FuzzyCustard · 01/03/2018 12:44

The radar says it's hit the bit of coast I can see from the window....but I can't see the coast, it's all white! Windy here but no precipitation yet.

Wingbing · 01/03/2018 12:44

Starting to get heavy in Exeter.

summersgoneaway · 01/03/2018 12:45

We aren't quite in the red warning just out of it still in yellow warning says snow we haven't had any for a few hours

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2018 12:45

Reastie I think it's likely to affect you a bit more this evening (not much unless anything new pops up) then tomorrow late afternoon.

The 06z GFS shows a large area tonight in the south that could be freezing rain. If this happens where you are, please do not travel unless essential. Anyone who has followed my threads will know that I very rarely say that.

The radar has snow to the N, S, E and W of us. But not on us. We are on a kind of snow-free island at the moment!

YuleABUnREASTIEable · 01/03/2018 12:52

I don’t know if I’ve ever known freezing rain and I’m not sure exactly what it is Confused . When rain freezes is it not sleet/hail/snow?

Gertrudethestag · 01/03/2018 12:56

I'm in the bit of the SW without the red warning (but we have amber) but on the meteoradar there's a huge amount of "purple" (snow) coming. But in amongst that there is red! Will the red fall as rain or snow? As this covers all of West Cornwall and moves up to Ireland.

GloriaSmud · 01/03/2018 12:56

Yule ~ This is good at explaining what freezing rain is. Not a nice type of weather.

Mummylin · 01/03/2018 12:59

Snow has restarted in Bournemouth, I am excited as a little kid ! It's always been one of my favourite things. Quite big bits now.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/03/2018 12:59

Certainly is wing I'm leaving work now. This is about as late as I'm willing to leave starting the journey home. I think they are leaving it up to the non essential staff to make their own decision when they leave.

PearlyG8 · 01/03/2018 13:05

Thinking of you Fuzzy and Gertrude (and DD and family) radar does look alarming.

notsomanky · 01/03/2018 13:05

youarenotkiddingme thank you!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2018 13:07

Gertrude unknown what it will fall as at present.

Basically a nose of warmer air higher up in the atmosphere is over riding the cold air nearer the ground. It's melting the snow. But as it falls through the cold dry air it becomes super cooled.

Supercooled water is water that is liquid even though the temperature is subzero. When it hits surfaces it will turn to a glaze of ice.

Thanks for the Met Eireann warning Gloria.

SE Dorset - snowing pretty heavily and steadily here now and has been for about 2 hours. Kids keep going out in 10 minute bursts because it's so cold. I am just watching from the window!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2018 13:12

Thanks for the report Birgitte :)

Poor Paddington station is struggling.

Just caught something on the news about people in the red warning area in Wales being urged to get home as soon as possible.

I've experienced freezing rain once.
It lays like a sheet of glass. I was amazed at the stupidity of people trying to get into cars on my street.

Then..... as the person at the top on the gently sloping bend opened their car door it was enough to cause car to slide and take all the others with it Sad

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2018 13:16

oh crikey youarekiddingme!

I've experienced it a couple of times. I get excited about every kind of interesting weather apart from freezing rain and freezing fog. I dread those.

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 01/03/2018 13:17

Take that back. Possibly should have left work half an hour or so earlier.

Oogle · 01/03/2018 13:20

Snow started again and a bit heavier than this morning (near. Southampton).
