Caroian. Where are you? Nothing yet in Dartford and a fairly clear sky

heavy blizzardy showers throughout the evening so far here in S Durham, its horrible

Justmuddlingalong · 27/02/2018 20:23

Proper snow in Fife. Right on the coast too! About 3cm deep so far and still falling. Hurts your nostrils to breathe cold.

UrsulaPandress · 27/02/2018 20:28

First time I've known thevwater at the stables to freeze during the day. Left it dripping last night so was gone this morning, but frozen when I got there this evening. Yeah. Days of transporting water to the horse.

Caroian · 27/02/2018 20:28

gttia we're quite a bit south of you, and close to the Sussex border

PrimalLass · 27/02/2018 20:33

We're on the Fife coast too.

kooshbin · 27/02/2018 20:33

OYBBK - could be that that weather station is having a bit of problem, but this is what it's currently showing.

I'm definitely not volunteering to go outside with a room thermometer to check! Wink

Just had about half an hour of pretty heavy snow here in rotherham, s yorks. It seems to be settling too but it's stopped snowing now.

Do has to get to leeds for work tomorrow and dd on a school trip to newark. Hoping we get a dumping and they can both stay home. Really don't want either of them going out in it on the roads.

BertrandRussell · 27/02/2018 20:49

Thawed a lot here near Sittingbourne :(. Heart melting at the thought of Anstruther,, Crail and Pittenweem under snow...,....

Justmuddlingalong · 27/02/2018 20:53

Latest temps in Fife.

So definitely less cold where there is cloud cover. I'm at -8c now.

Ursula also completely frozen had a dreadful job trying to get water. We broke the ice in the trough and it was an inch and a half thick but at least that then allowed us to decant some for the stables for tonight. My hands were killing me afterwards with the cold. (East Herts - only light flurries but v cold)

GloriaSmud · 27/02/2018 21:09

-3.3C here (Leicester)
We 've had loads of snow showers head for us in the last few hours, according to netweather's radar but they seem to be fizzling out at the moment before they reach Leicester.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2018 21:11

Met office have just tweeted this picture.

Oh, I misread your previous post, OYBBK, though we don't usually get those temperatures in the balmy south.

I think that with all the focus on snow, the low temperatures aren't quite getting the attention. This is not the time for heating systems to fail, especially as engineers will be battling pretty atrocious road conditions.

Wildlife will be suffering. I must remember to check the bird bath tomorrow, because it's likely to have frozen. (I got tut-tutted at by our local blackbird today, probably because I was late in putting out mealworms for it.)

stubbornstains · 27/02/2018 21:12

It's forecast to start snowing here in S Cornwall at about 1am. However, we've just had a lovely blizzardy flurry, which has left a dusting, already.

Regarding the "not settling even though it's above freezing" question: I live in a fairly new cul de sac, with nice black tarmac on the roads and pavements. On the side of the cul de sac that had the sun shining on it all afternoon, the snow has melted on the tarmac. On the side that was in shade, it's settled. So my theory is that tarmac (and other surfaces?) can retain a bit of heat for hours....

SaltySeaBird · 27/02/2018 21:15

OYBBK does Brighton look set to get any? My app shows some Friday but rain Thursday/Friday night so I guess anything Friday will be falling on wet ground?

MadisonAvenue · 27/02/2018 21:18

-4 here, South Staffs/West Mids border, an hour ago. We had heavy snow this afternoon which then thawed in the sun which followed. That's now obviously frozen so the side roads and footpaths are treacherous.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2018 21:19

salty don't rely on the app :) If you do get rain it's likely to be freezing rain. Nightmare :(

Nice observations stubborn.

Kooshbin these temperatures are extremely unusual in the south.

CiderwithBuda · 27/02/2018 21:23

We’ve had a light dusting here in Somerset.
