And the effects of it should start to be felt early next week (wind forecast to swing from SW/W direction to North/NE and then Easterly.)

Sorry to ask, what is ssw?

GloriaSmud · 12/02/2018 20:46

Justmuddlingalong started a thread here last week all about SSW! It's what a lot of weather forum folk have been getting excited about as it could (if other weather factors fall into place) mean the rest of February/March might be on the cold side. (I think the last SSW that occurred that really affected us was 2013, when we had something like the coldest March for 100 years.)

gttia · 12/02/2018 21:16

Thank you Smile

GloriaSmud · 13/02/2018 15:29

Bit more support for colder weather from a 2nd weather model ~ the ECM. Winds coming from North/NE next week.
(Also worth a mention that on the BBC lunchtime weather forecast, it was mentioned that next week could be colder.)

GloriaSmud · 14/02/2018 08:32

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 14/02/2018 10:53

BishopBrennansArse · 14/02/2018 12:56

Day trip to IOW and getting snowed on Grin

GloriaSmud · 14/02/2018 16:49

And the metoffice forecast hints at cold as well (apologies once again whywontthey!)

UK Outlook for Monday 19 Feb 2018 to Wednesday 28 Feb 2018:

Dry, sometimes bright weather and light winds will predominate in the UK throughout next week, with increasing amounts of overnight frost. Rain or drizzle and stronger winds are possible at times in northwestern areas. Temperatures at the start of next week will be around average for the time of year, and probably slightly above average in the north. However, there will be a trend toward colder weather by the end of the week and into the following week, as winds turn predominately easterly. Wintry showers may develop, with the potential for some significant snowfalls focused on southern, central or eastern areas. The location and intensity of any snowfall will be uncertain until much nearer the time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/02/2018 18:07

Can I just say, I don't mind if we don't get snow now. I've given this winter plenty of chance and it was rubbish. It's time to move on and see if Spring can give it a better shot.

Hoping for one last proper cold snap with snow and then a quick launch into a sunny spring... thanks for all the updates, looking promising for us southerners!

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 15/02/2018 11:02

Rapidly going off this thread !!!!Grin

GloriaSmud · 15/02/2018 12:30

whywontthey Grin
It's quite nice today though (in the sun!) I would quite like a bit more sun and warmth to dry out the back garden ~ clay soil and feels like I'm walking on a wet sponge at the moment!

Perihelion · 15/02/2018 16:42

Colder?
I suppose it has been just above 0c recently, but it seems to have been with a really cold wind. Had sleet yesterday on a Southerly wind.
Am quite happy with this winter weather though as I can wear my big coat without getting sweaty.... I've even worn a jumper underneath it occasionally.

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 15/02/2018 17:09

It has been beautiful today. One of those days where a big coat is too warm, but a lighter jacket is too cold. Or that may be because of my menopause !!

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 15/02/2018 18:09

It was a bit warmer today - I undid my coat when i was walking around at lunchtime.

hoochymama1 · 15/02/2018 18:19

Dried my washing on the line today Grin

PestoSurfissimos · 16/02/2018 09:36

I’m resigned to the fact that the only snow I’m going to see, is the snow at the Winter Olympics 🙁

GloriaSmud · 16/02/2018 14:51

I don't know Pesto, latest outlook from metoffice is for mostly cold/wintry showers possible...

UK Outlook for Wednesday 21 Feb 2018 to Friday 2 Mar 2018:

Dry, but often bright weather is likely across the UK throughout the second half of the week, with overnight frosts becoming widespread. However, outbreaks of rain or drizzle along with some hill snow and stronger winds are possible at times across northwestern areas. Temperatures will turn colder by the end of the week and into the following week, as the wind tends to turn east or southeasterly in direction. Wintry showers may develop, with the potential for some significant snowfalls, most likely focused on southern, central or eastern areas. The location and intensity of any snowfall will be uncertain until much nearer the time. However, some milder unsettled weather still may occur at times, especially in the west and northwest.

UK Outlook for Saturday 3 Mar 2018 to Saturday 17 Mar 2018:
In the beginning of March, it is likely to stay cold with widespread overnight frost. There will be a greater chance than usual of easterly winds developing, which would bring very cold weather at times and the potential for some snowfall in eastern and even southern parts. Unusually, it will probably be driest in the northwest. As we head further into March there are indications that it may become more changeable and less cold, with the wettest weather and mildest temperatures likely to be in the south or the southwest of the UK.

InMySpareTime · 16/02/2018 15:39

Of course frosty and snowy everywhere means "driest in the NW" (especially under the Manchester Snow Shield). Seems like all precipitation disappears as soon as temperatures go sub-zero.

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2018 15:08

Some thoughts from TheWeatherOutlook on the possibility of a cold end to winter.

The metofffice Outlook still going for cold/snow...

UK Outlook for Thursday 22 Feb 2018 to Saturday 3 Mar 2018:
Dry with sunny spells throughout the second half of the week, with overnight frosts, along with patchy mist and freezing fog. However, outbreaks of rain or drizzle along with some hill snow and stronger winds are possible at times across northwestern areas. Temperatures will turn colder for most by the end of the week, with wind from the east or southeast. The cold weather will be mainly dry initially with a chance of snow flurries in the east/southeast. Over next weekend and following week there is an increase chance of snow for many, especially in the south and east. The location and timing of any snowfall will be uncertain until much nearer the time. However, some milder unsettled weather still may occur at times, especially in the west and northwest.

UK Outlook for Sunday 4 Mar 2018 to Sunday 18 Mar 2018:
In the beginning of March, it is likely to stay cold for most with widespread overnight frost. There will be a greater chance than usual of winds originating from continental Europe, which could bring very cold weather at times and the potential for some snowfall, especially in eastern and southern parts. Unusually, it will probably be driest in the northwest. As we head further into March there are indications that it may become more changeable and less cold, with the wettest weather and mildest temperatures likely to be in the south or the southwest of the UK, but this is currently very uncertain.

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2018 15:52

I’m starting to get excited!!!

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2018 19:18
(Should remember, it's only 'a possible cold snap and their could be snow' at the moment. Things should become more certain as the days go on.)
