Thank you for the updates GloriaSmud

GloriaSmud · 18/02/2018 10:39

Thank you, Pesto Smile

Some thoughts from Netweather on the possibility of a cold spell.
I think from Thursday onwards it will be getting quite cold and woolly hats >Xmas Smile will be needed.

gttia · 18/02/2018 10:40

Oh dear! Just as I'm back to work. Thanks for updating us you do a fab job

MrSlant · 18/02/2018 10:47

Gloria I'm not even speaking to you right now, I have fallen into a world of charts and data and modelling and opinions that I barely understand. My poor children keep being forced to look at all the different charts, it's a good job they are well trained in tolerating mummy.

gttia · 18/02/2018 10:53

The 26.02 has heavy snow forecast for here. So useful as I can plan my work and be prepared!

GloriaSmud · 18/02/2018 11:53

Oh dear, Mr Slant, your poor children! Grin

gttia - you could well be in luck this time.
I think although the cold starts from Thursday, snow is more likely from next Sunday onwards so as that's a week away, it's important to keep tuned to forecasts for more detailed forecasts over the next few days.

Latest update from the metoffice reflects what a lot of the charts are showing...

UK Outlook for Friday 23 Feb 2018 to Sunday 4 Mar 2018:
Dry with sunny spells as we head into next weekend with overnight frosts, along with patchy mist and freezing fog. However, outbreaks of rain or drizzle along with some hill snow and stronger winds are possible at times across northwestern areas. Temperatures will turn colder for most with wind from the east or northeast, possibly brisk in SE England. The cold weather will be mainly dry initially with a chance of snow flurries in the east and southeast. Heading into the following week, there is an increased chance of snow for many, especially in the south and east. Although the location and timing of any snowfall remains uncertain. However, some milder unsettled weather may still occur at times, especially in the west.

UK Outlook for Monday 5 Mar 2018 to Monday 19 Mar 2018:
At the start of this period it is likely to stay cold for most with widespread overnight frost. There will be a greater chance than usual of mainly easterly winds originating from continental Europe, which could bring very cold weather at times and the potential for some snowfall, especially in eastern and southern parts. Unusually, it will probably be driest in the northwest. As we head further into mid March there are indications that it may become more changeable and less cold, with the wettest weather and mildest temperatures likely to be in the south or the southwest of the UK, but this is currently very uncertain.

GloriaSmud · 18/02/2018 16:50

Highest temperatures for 3pm next Sunday according to the latest GFS
That's it - the 'warmest' it gets all day.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2018 16:57

Thanks Gloria for keeping up the forecasting :)

I'm very cautious about the snow prospects at the moment. I think some (not here) assume SSW = snow. It doesn't. It means that, if things line up right, then the possibility is there.

I'm interested to see what happens with such a late season SSW. It could be pretty interesting. I'm glad that there hasn't been unseasonal warmth prior to this to cause buds to break early, else it would really affect fruit crops.

And maximum temperatures for midday Monday, 26/2 Barely making it above freezing for a lot of the country.

OYBBK - I know the metoffice aren't right all the time but I think taking what they're saying together with what others (charts/weather forums) are now saying as well, I'm on a 'getting slowly confident of a cold spell' while still keeping the cautious 'but it's still a week away' train of thought.
Think that covers all bases there!

gttia · 18/02/2018 17:17

That chart looks interesting.
I'm on a mindful watch now, I don't like snow, so will be checking the weather hourly all week!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2018 17:35

Cold spell yes, how cold, uncertain, snow, even more uncertain. I think you've got it right Gloria.

FoodSchmood · 19/02/2018 07:49

I've got snow and freezing temperatures forecast every day Sunday through to Friday next week on netweather (Hove). It's the first proper forecast of snow that could/should settle all winter. I know you're saying don't get too excited yet, but is too late, I'm crazy excited!! I so want my kids to experience some proper snow! They've been obsessed with "the snowman" and "the snowman and the snowdog" for over a year and are desperate to make their own snowman! To hell with caution I'm ordering a food delivery for Sunday morning, getting in more logs for the fire and tidying up the garden so there's space for snowman making. You can blame me when the snow now doesn't appear! ;)

GloriaSmud · 19/02/2018 10:07

Why not FoodSchmood! I might join you in a spot of 'sledge polishing' a bit later in the week if it encourages things along a bit!

Latest outlook from the metoffice.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:
Dry, bright and turning increasingly colder during this period, with widespread overnight frosts. A brisk easterly wind developing across the south by Thursday. Light snow flurries possible in the east.

And some thoughts from Netweather and TheWeatherOutlook.

GloriaSmud · 19/02/2018 19:00
It's beginning to look like it's going to be really cold!
GloriaSmud · 19/02/2018 20:22

From John Hammond on twitter:
SEVERE COLD UPDATE: Now looking increasingly likely, especially early next week. Where / how much #uksnow? Impossible to say at this range but eastern UK first to be affected. Of course, we'll update with more detail when realistically possible. #ukcold #SSW #BeastFromTheEast

I might just have added a few things to tomorrows shopping delivery just in case!.....

TheWoollybacksWife · 19/02/2018 20:36

Looks like time to stock up on tomato soup. The stores in my Armageddon cupboard are getting very low. I am also starting to regret giving up wine for lent - a couple of bottles of red and 8 tins of tomato soup are the first things in my trolley once the MN snow watch threads are started.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/02/2018 20:40

must get some more firelighters in.

Ooh...getting a tad excited here !!! Online shopping done today, for tomorrow !!

DazzlingMilton · 19/02/2018 22:16

I’m off to stock up on de-icer tomorrow! Do I buy the sledge now or wait?! I can’t risk them selling out....

gttia · 19/02/2018 23:01

Crikey - think I might do an on line shop too and be ready.
The last heavy snow fall here I pulled the shopping home with the kids on sledges!

MrSlant · 19/02/2018 23:34

My inner keeper of the OFRS (can't remember the acronym properly it's been that long since I triggered it!) has just ordered an online shop with big bottles of water and all the ingredients for making bread and pasta. I live in a house with many giant teens!

Todays Outlook from the metoffice...

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Generally dry and bright through the period, but turning increasingly colder, especially across the south, with overnight frost. Brisk easterly winds will develop across the south.

Outlook for the UK over the next 6-30 days
UK Outlook for Saturday 24 Feb 2018 to Monday 5 Mar 2018:
The weekend will be mostly dry, with frost and freezing fog patches clearing to give cold days with sunny spells. Snow flurries may develop across eastern and southern areas where a brisk easterly wind will make it feel bitterly cold. It may be less cold in the far northwest with some rain possible. Into next week it is likely to turn colder with brisk easterly winds, giving a significant wind chill, especially in the south and east. This will give the risk of further snow flurries, which may become heavier and more widespread. There is also the risk of more significant snow pushing northeastwards across southern and some central areas. The north and west will be brighter, and it may be less cold across the far northwest at times.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 6 Mar 2018 to Tuesday 20 Mar 2018:
At the start of this period it is likely to remain cold or very cold for many with widespread frost and brisk easterly winds from Continental Europe, making it feel raw. This will continue to bring the risk of significant snow across some southern, eastern and central parts of the country, whereas towards the north and west it will start drier. As we head through the middle of March, there is a lot of uncertainty in the forecast, but it may start to turn more unsettled and less cold with the wettest and mildest weather spreading in from the southwest. In contrast, northern and eastern areas could remain colder well into March.

Dazzling - not sure where you are but based on ^^ that Outlook, might be worth getting one..
