MrsK no it's not looking less serious. There are always going to be some who end up with very little over the first half of this week compared to perhaps their neighbours down the road.

The end of the week doesn't look less serious, but it does perhaps look less certain.

I think one aspect of forecasting that can be hard to convey is how do you say there is x percent of a very serious outcome, but Y percent of a less serious outcome and convey that clearly so that people are prepared adequately for the worst but suffer minimal needless disruption should it not occur.

Just watched our local bbc weather news, they said they the met office had issued a warning for some possible snow showers.

ibbydibby · 24/02/2018 21:56

Getting ridiculously excited by the prospect of snow in Norfolk, we have had virtually none this winter, apart from a covering which lasted all of 2 hours.

I keep thinking that people will start panic-buying milk bread etc in super markets but haven't seen anything to indicate that's happening so far. Also thought there would be rush for petrol (people also flock to petrol station at times of imminent crisis, don't they?) but again no indication of that happening.

Beautiful day here, lovely sunshine, but oh so cold.

Tr1skel1on · 24/02/2018 21:59

OYBBK it is lovely to be back. I thought of you during Ophelia, wind speeds were crazy, but not that unusual. I still went out & walked my young collie dog. What was really odd was the desert dust reaching this far north, and we got the strange coloured sun effect, never seen it up here before.

I'm looking forward to lots of snow, for me that is really unusual :)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2018 22:05

The sepia day was very odd wasn't it Grin
It's lovely to have you back :)

I was slightly surprised at the lack of panic purchasing too today.

Maybe people are too reliant on apps now and if the app isn't showing it, it isn't happening?

OnionKnight · 24/02/2018 22:14

I'm following a few weather forecasters on Twitter and they are all saying to ignore your phone apps and the BBC.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2018 22:20

That's sensible Onion.

18z is beginning to roll out. The story says the same for the most of the week. Still massive uncertainty for Friday. It develops the disruptive low further west this time.

The BBC weather app will tell us to expect snow showers when we are in 2ft of snow Grin

GreenySho · 24/02/2018 22:43

Definite problem with people relying on the apps. Most of the people I’ve told have gone straight on their phones and said “nah it looks fine”

Netweather forum throwing around phrases like buried, whiteout and blizzard!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 24/02/2018 22:58

@onion

Who is worth following on Twitter please?

AdoraBell · 25/02/2018 00:12

Cold here, SW, but dry the last couple of days. I think we might get some towards the end of next week.

Petalflowers · 25/02/2018 04:06

Wow, just compared BBC to Weather Outlook, a weather station I use. The BBC predicts some snow, more rain over the coming week, the other a lot of snow (Kent).

Petalflowers · 25/02/2018 04:09

And Netweather are different again. Ie. Really heavy snow on Tuesday and Friday, but not much inbetween.

YuleABUnREASTIEable · 25/02/2018 06:52

Marking place. I’m doing a GCSE assessment as an examiner on Tuesday in Kent and panicking about getting there if there’s snow. BBC says light snow so hoping things don’t change.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 25/02/2018 07:22

I'm in Kent Petal, the forecasts vary so much don't they.

Right, who does offer good forecasts? Obviously Gloria and OYBBK but I need to feed my obsession. Grin

llmb · 25/02/2018 07:26

We’re Sussex and the bbc app is now showing ONE measley flake at 1am Tuesday. That’s it Hmm

That’s what I’d also like to know, ohyoubadkitten and gloria which app IS reliable? Sorry if I’ve missed that.

OnionKnight · 25/02/2018 07:27

I've just found this Shock

the BBC ditched the Met Office for the commercial operator MeteoGroup. Under the new contract rules, the BBC are under no obligation to broadcast on TV, radio or online Government weather warnings of ‘Yellow’ level and/or cold weather alerts. Therefore, you may miss out on these important communications from the Met Office who after all are the official national forecaster.

I follow:

llmb · 25/02/2018 07:36

That’s interesting about the bbc! I don’t have twitter so will see if any of those have an app, thanks onion. I used to rate accuweather but even they lately have been really wrong with the forecasts and last year or so were so reliable.

GloriaSmud · 25/02/2018 07:36

Wow, OnionKnight. So people who only use the BBC for forecasts could be putting themselves in danger/have no idea what's coming this week if they haven't seen any warnings Shock

As far as this week goes, the first part of the week is 'as you were', I think Friday though there might be a weather warning coming out for heavy snow, especially across the middle of the country.

Cerrocoandblack · 25/02/2018 07:42

I think the BBC is just trolling us all Hmm

I have one snowflake for Tuesday night. Every other weather site has us getting snow and at least 2 degrees lower than the BBC.

Bertiemcgertie · 25/02/2018 07:51

Fascinating thread thanks to OYBBK and Gloria.

In my area of the country the BBC are showing no snow at all and looking at the met office this morning they show 60-70% chance of heavy snow. WTF?!

How are people supposed to prepare? Seems crazy the two are giving such differing forecasts.

If the BBC are wrong (and I believe they are) then surely they need to urgently look at their providers again.

kally195 · 25/02/2018 08:00

Utterly confused by the fluctuating forecasts now. Some are saying we are going to get relatively heavy snow (east Kent coast) and some none at all. All consistently very cold though.

AccuWeather or not-very-accuweather gives us a 'realfeel' temp of -15 today, as we are up high and we have a windy day forecast. Brrr.

Following with interest - if it does snow we will be quite cut off!

speakout · 25/02/2018 08:03

We are going to be hit bad tonight. ( Eastern Scotland)

I normally love snow but I have a two hour drive to Dundee tomorrow ( DD has an Interview for University application) so I am dreading it.

gttia · 25/02/2018 08:14

Our forecast has changed again too, for the better for me! I should now make my meeting yeah
