been stuck behind mobile signal resistant walls in hospital with dd and got out to find reports of a beast from the east...

It is really warm here. I have been too hot in our unheated flat.. wonder if I shall be saying that next week? I only put the heating on when the children required baths, the beauty of being on the wsw side of the building!

Oh MN weather wise women
I moved a couple of meetings to Wednesday in order to get travel out of the way in one day
Central London, Essex, Herts, (travelling from North London)

This is going to be something I might need to rearrange I guess? I can call the clients on Monday, not sure if I should try to rearrange, really hoping snow is either exaggerated or gone by Wednesday
It's the Central London one that will be hardest to move but presume that will be the least affected

MachineBee · 24/02/2018 17:00

I’m on crutches atm and my DD is celebrating her 30th birthday on Tuesday during the daytime in London and I’m travelling in from West Kent by train. Will I get there and more importantly, get home?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2018 17:02

caveats as above!!! I always worry that I might cause people real issues if they follow my advice when I'm just a person with a bit of a weather obsession. I'm certain that if people from weather forums were to peek in here they'd be rolling their eyes at me.

If it were me planning (as indeed I am a bit) I think I would try and carry on as normal for the majority of the week, adjusting plans if needed according to new info. There may well be some disruption, it's just too tricky to know where. You might be in a village that can't get out to go to school, while people in the next village along accuse you of exaggerating!

For much of England and Wales I'd be wary about Friday. Lots of models have been showing blizzards quite consistently from Thursday midnight or so onwards. Some of the models are showing this turning to rain on Friday, perhaps for a time, perhaps for a prolonged time.

However, if it does turn to rain, at the moment I think there is a reasonable risk of it turning to freezing rain, as although the upper temperatures warm, it would still be falling through a very cold boundary layer (the air closest to the surface) . I've not seen this being forecast anywhere, it's just my feeling.

So the options for Friday at the moment (and this will change ) are:
-blizzards
-heavy snow turning to rain
-snow I think turning to freezing rain.

The extent as to which all this this moves north, I'm uncertain.

I so wish I could tell people more specifically about travel. I'll certainly, and I'm sure Gloria will be too, be updating as soon as we see anything that looks problematic over the next few days.

I am so depressed about all this - I can’t drive in snow and it takes me nearly an hour to walk to the station to get the train to work. I really thought it was all over for this winter and we’d got through relatively unscathed here in Worcestershire...Am hoping we escape!

howyalikedemapples · 24/02/2018 17:12

How bad do you think south east Scotland may get it? Need to prepare my employers if a chance we may get snowed in, you do a fab job OYBBK, thanks

Riverside2 · 24/02/2018 17:12

Thanks Kitten
Machine I hope you are fully fit again soon Flowers

MachineBee · 24/02/2018 17:23

Thanks Riverside. I’m on the mend but long standing arrangements can be managed as long as the weather behaves. Suspect it won’t. We’ll have to see.

whereareyousleep · 24/02/2018 17:28

Any ideas about Barnsley/Rotherham area? I'm 38 weeks pregnant and could be getting induced next week so I'm getting rather worried about getting to hospital Confused

Notmyideamovingon · 24/02/2018 17:41

With respect to localised differences In the last minor snow event? Just after Xmas /early Jan, our village had no snow and the village three miles down the road but "higher" up had loads of snow and the schools closed to much eye rolling until we saw the pictures!!

GrockleBocs · 24/02/2018 17:48

Eek I've got a full day of meetings booked on Wednesday well in the yellow zone. Looks like there will be much rearranging to be done.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 24/02/2018 17:52

My goodness it was beautiful out there today, got a bagful of pokemon too so I am a haapy women. Just need some snow now! Grin

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 24/02/2018 18:00

I see this thread is in discussions of the day. Might it be worth starting a fresh thread just for this event?

GloriaSmud · 24/02/2018 18:04

notmyidea ~ You could get snow showers Monday but from Tuesday onwards, those showers are likely to be heavy. All day Wednesday and Thursday morning ~ heavy snow (bit of a respite Thursday afternoon), then more heavy snow Friday, especially in the afternoon.

BuzzKillington · 24/02/2018 18:05

Come on snow! We had one fabulous snow day in early December, another one or two would be very welcome here.

Cerrocoandblack · 24/02/2018 18:13

Wind has noticeably picked up this afternoon. It’s really quite windy out there (N Essex)

stubbornstains · 24/02/2018 18:18

I spy an incipient Cornish meltdown (as it were).

The BBC predicts snow every day from 28th Feb- 5th March at the moment.

If that happens, it will be the actual end of civilisation as we know it, and people won't stop talking about it for a generation.

It will be very sad for DS1, as he's been rehearsing hard for the pantomime in the next village, and if there's any quantity of snow whatsoever that won't be happening. On the plus side, my parents were threatening to come down for said performance (bad daughter emoticon).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2018 18:22

Im not sure if we need a specific thread. @GloriaSmud what do you think?
I've got a feeling this thread will whizz by quickly now. Shall we see how we go by first thing tomorrow?

Mapples I'd be keeping an eye on things. You are in a vulnerable position.

I'm slightly rusty as to my knowledge of topology around parts of the U.K. and also exactly where some towns are Grin so answering questions about specific towns takes a bit of googling to remind myself, It's been quite a while since we've had a big snow watch going on.

I think if you are in a yellow warning area you need to consider whether you are in an area that would normally get snow in an easterly/north easterly - do you along a river valley such as the Thames valley for instance? which can funnel streamers of snow showers, or perhaps you live an area sheltered by high ground to your east, which could decrease your chances.

Today was utterly gorgeous. I was slightly perturbed by some camellias that seem to have decided to flower on our walk. They might regret that!

BuzzKillington · 24/02/2018 18:39

Today was glorious!

I did parkrun and it was so bloody cold, but I could see loads of hopeful green bluebell shoots.

IrenetheQuaint · 24/02/2018 18:46

Friday is six days away so I guess a lot could change before then, OYBBK? (I am travelling north from London on Friday morning to attend a funeral...)

Howyoualldoworkme · 24/02/2018 18:54

South Hampshire? Just over the hill from Portsmouth.
We had snow very badly in 2010 with people trapped in their cars and on buses trying to get up Portsdown Hill.
Will it be like that again?

GloriaSmud · 24/02/2018 19:04

@OhYouBadBadKitten ~ think waiting until tomorrow would be a good idea. In a way though, these 'SnowWatch' threads are specific enough already and as you say, I think with what's going to happen this week, we'll soon fill this one and need a new thread in the next few days anyway!

GloriaSmud · 24/02/2018 19:15

Howyouall ~ chance of that again, perhaps not Monday~Wednesday but Thursday afternoon through to Friday afternoon, might be the time to watch for your area.
