Norfolk calling...has turned (even more) bitterly cold this afternoon.

Am due to go to London on Thurs by train, but anticipating having to cancel.

No signs of panic buying here, yet...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2018 22:37

You're welcome Trotters :) at the moment the warnings start Monday late afternoon, though it's likely there will be some snow showers before then.

The 18z just reinforces the previous forecast. Maybe a temporary slightly milder interlude on friday in the se, but this creates the messy snow/rain mix I've been talking about.

So.... outdoor tap off, pipes relagged. Lip balm on list as is eye drops for my contacts as they were so dry today. Snow shovel, salt, snow socks for car refound. New gloves purchased - was fed up of wearing two left handed gloves!

Don't forget water for the birds.

Same here, big shop now packed away, emergency plans in handbag ready for work (nhs, I have staff that are crucial to our service) and wine stocked up..welly boots are out and ready too. Really don't need it, big meeting Tuesday, could shape my career. Not great timing for me but the kids are excited Wink

Going for a long walk in a seaside town today catching pokemon, shall wrap up toasty. I am so excited about next week. Thank you OYBBK and Gloria, first thing I check in the morning is this thread. Smile

DazzlingMilton · 24/02/2018 07:44

The uncertainty is almost unbearable. Met office seems to be playing down the snow for us in SW London, netweather is being very non-committal on anything other than it getting very cold (then suddenly warming up on March 3) although it does look like the snow will be pretty significant if it does come, iPhone shows it snowing here for 5 days our of the next 7.

Gloria and kitten, am I right in—Googling—thinking that 1mm rain = 1cm snow, ie a factor of 10?!

DazzlingMilton · 24/02/2018 07:44

Strikeout fail why doesn’t the old way work anymore?

GloriaSmud · 24/02/2018 07:48

That sounds lovely, DameDeDoubtance May you catch many Pokemon!

Think it's a case of 'as you were' when it comes to models this morning. Still keeping an eye on the low at the end of the week. I'm going for very cold and snowy but with a gradual warm up for the south going into next weekend.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2018 08:00

Next weekend is problematic. Some models keep us in the deep freeze, others follow GFS trend to end it. Solutions range from a mega dump of snow to a snow to rain mix. I think the key is to be prepared, but not to pin all your hopes on it.

dazzling rain:snow ratio varies with moisture content and temperature. So for the beginning of the week you could expect to see something like a ratio of 0.7:10 but if we were to get more marginal conditions at the end of the week it could be more like 1.3:10 giving a denser wetter snow.

The automated output from the met office is starting to pick up on the prospect of snow this week for central southern england, with snow showers on and off through the week then a lot of snow Friday.

magimedi · 24/02/2018 08:13

I am not pinning any hopes on the white stuff!!

MorvahRising · 24/02/2018 08:21

OYBBK I just saw that forecast for Friday! That looks pretty interesting. I might go and dig out the toboggan. DS is away at university but it seems sad not to use it!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2018 08:22

For fun you can put in your location and see the gfs automated output estimating your snow depth for next week into xcweather

Take with a massive pinch of salt.

oh and note that where it is giving 0.1mm of rain in places early this week, take that as very light snow showers.

Am I the only one who is dreading next week’s weather? Fresh snow is okay, but I hate the ice. I’m not confident on walking on it, and my ten minute walk to work becomes a nightmare. I’ll probably drive... .i hate the inconvenience it causes, although concede it does look pretty. I’m literally counting down the days until it’s all over next week.

magimedi · 24/02/2018 08:32

You are not alone, petal. I hate snow & ice with a passion.

My idea of heaven would be to live in a climate where I never needed a coat or jumper. Grin

But I do love weather watching, from the comfort of home!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2018 08:41

I have mixed feelings. I love really really interesting weather and I enjoy the drama of snow - the watching it fall, the measuring of it, the constant conversation. I also love sledging and have a secret spot that no one else seems to have found, so it's all mine Grin But powder snow is rubbish for sledging.

But for personal reasons I'm also dreading it.

Petal and Magi you definitely aren't alone, I'm almost phobic about snow and I'm checking every forecast going hoping to find one that will tell me we're going to have a bit of light drizzle instead of the white stuff!

So expert forecasters, what's the verdict on snowfall in Newcastle next week?

AFingerofFudge · 24/02/2018 08:56

petal I love the snow but hate the ice and seem to have the worse sense of balance ever on it. I used to dread walking on it for fear of injuries but then a couple of years ago found these and they are bloody brilliant! Has made a huge difference!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/02/2018 08:56

Scarlett I'd say you are pretty likely to get some at some point this week, perhaps showers Mon/Tues, maybe something more sustained at some point.

www.autosock.co.uk are great for short term snowfall, just don't run them on tarmac as they wear away quickly, but they are really quick to get on and off. However, local authorities won't have much excuse for not clearing snow for the majority of the week. It's well forecast, not marginal and there won't be rain to wash the grit off at the beginning.

OYBBK, thank you. Just as I suspected! Grrr, it's March! Thought the worst of winter was over!

gttia · 24/02/2018 09:02

I hate it too, if I can just get through Tuesday it'll be better

Fingers crossed gttia that you'll be lucky with the snow showers.
