I think its best if we keep it in weather WhattheFox, but talk here a lot and whenever we see a post talking about the weather point them in here. Otherwise I've found myself trying to update three or four different threads with a resulting amount of confusion and extra effort.

Emergency services and councils should know about it if the met office cold alert system is working properly. The system is actually really designed for them rather than for members of the public.

We have indoor piggies, they are so cute - they'd be doing a massive Daily Fail sad face if I tried to keep them outdoors as they only go out when they can sun themselves (we have a run with a sunshade for the spoilt little monkeys)

nancy75 · 23/02/2018 18:47

We have got yellow ! Snow warnings for Monday & Tuesday & snowflakes for mon, tue & wed. I’m se London/edge of Kent. I’ll be eternally grateful to anyone that tells me the forecast is wrongGrin

Whatthefoxgoingon · 23/02/2018 18:53

@OYBBK

gotcha!

@nancy

Ok, it’s wrong. I may have just said that for your undying gratitude Grin

nancy75 · 23/02/2018 18:59

Whatthefoxgoingon I’ll send the gratitude on Thursday when I haven’t seen any snowGrin
I work for a tennis club that does outdoor lessons every day, 400 cancellations next week is not something I want to be doingAngry

Frouby · 23/02/2018 19:01

My piggies have lived outside happily for the last 2 years. Ndn has indoor piggies and they have had numerous vet appointments and 3 deaths since I had mine.

They are both as fat as butter. Have unlimited access to Timothy hay and dried food and a sensible amount of vegatables.

If they come inside the heating is set at 20 degrees. They will be stressed at the noise. They will be in a dog crate rather than their hutch which is too big to bring inside. And they will have to be inside for weeks as it won't be warm enough to evict them.

Am sure a modern shed with a heat pad, a small area packed with straw and their usual habitat will be better for them will be better than a 15 degree jump, a strange house, a whippet potentially lurking around and all the noises and smells of a family home.

howyalikedemapples · 23/02/2018 19:04

OYBBK, am I right that it’s the south rather than Scotland that’s seeing the worst of any possible snow? I live in southeast Scotland, on top of a moor 2and half miles from the nearest road! Am obviously prepping as if we are going to be snowed in but not sure how bad we can expect it too get, thanks!

BestIsWest · 23/02/2018 19:15

We are in Wales. DerekTheWeatherman has just said we may get a few flurries next week but has also tweeted about a deep low from the bay of Biscay potentially causing big problems next Friday.

brizzledrizzle · 23/02/2018 19:17

@Frouby my piggies are doing their envious face ! Yours sound like they live in a palace.

Hmmalittlefishy · 23/02/2018 19:38

I've just checked bbc weather and it says a few snow showers Tuesday morning but that's it. Are they underestimating? I'm East mids so usually get snow!

Frouby · 23/02/2018 19:41

Thanks @brizzledrizzle they really are well cared for. We have ponies too and see more damage caused by 'killing with kindness' than neglect. They are well handled and tame but happier being piggies outside than overgrown hamsters inside.

They struggle to regulate their temps in tje summer so I think a centrally heated house will cause more stress than a gradual drop in temps. I have had my hand in their bedroom tonight and it is significantly warmer than the air temp. And they are snuggled up together too.

Am more worried about the pet pigeon as he is on his own and won't have a big bed in. Have covered both hutches with thick towels and hope that helps tonight. If we shift to shed tomorrow we won't be able to get pigeon in so it means he is locked in until it warms up which stresses him out. Plus he is warmer flying around. Will keep covering for now, heat pads will be here monday and hope the snow misses us!

MorvahRising · 23/02/2018 19:46

May I join the thread? I am a very long term lurker and feel it would just be rude to keep lurking and not join in. OYBBK and Gloria are the weather benchmarks chez Rising; DH has been very keen to know what the latest is as he has a long journey tomorrow. You two are amazing; what a team!

We are central southern England to borrow OYBBKs phrase and getting a bit excited about the possibility of some snow. I have no experience of guinea pigs but we have chickens; I just hope they are huddled up very close tonight!

brizzledrizzle · 23/02/2018 19:48

@Frouby - agreed. We have a large indoor cage which gives ours 14sq feet but not many can do that.

Back to the weather, I've got an early start tomorrow so I'm hoping it stays good as I've got to go on the seemingly very accident prone M5; it always seems to be on the news for serious accidents at the moment.

Notmyideamovingon · 23/02/2018 19:53

Just shipped dd off to scout camp for the weekendShock

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2018 20:20

sounds like my dinner is nearly ready, so I'll answer a couple of questions and be back later :)

Yes the apps and automated outputs on the met office site are likely to be under doing some snow amounts for some people. Unfortunately that's the nature of snow showers - spotting exactly where they will happen is very difficult unless trains of them start forming. That sort of info is usually gleaned close to the time.

For Monday/Tuesday the biggest risk is down the East coast. I think some parts of the north east through Lincolnshire and perhaps Kent are at greatest risk.

At the end of the week there's huge uncertainty. If the milder moister air does move up from the south, then there could be blizzard like conditions in the south. However, if it moves up too far north, then the south could see wet instead. Or of course, it may stay south of the U.K. Stay tuned!

ok dinner time before dh gets grumpy that I'm ignoring his efforts.

I think summarising it:
This weekend ~ bright and sunny but cold.
Monday and Tuesday ~ chance of snow showers along the eastern side of the country to start with but there is the chance of them coming inland/occurring just about anywhere. Chance of snow increases as we go through Tuesday and showers could reach western areas. Temperatures barely reaching freezing.

Wednesday onwards ~ Really cold, -2 or -3 might be daytime highs, severe frosts at night -4 (midlands/south of the UK) Scotland could see -10 or colder. A system tries to come in on Thursday from the South, could bring heavy rain or snow (I'm thinking snow more likely if it's still cold enough?)

GloriaSmud · 23/02/2018 20:38

Or basically what OYBBK just said.
Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2018 21:01

I think even in the south, if we get snow cover then minima could be down at -8 or beyond later in the week. This am many places had minima of -5c.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2018 21:01

but good to see we are aligned Gloria Grin

fredabear · 23/02/2018 21:07

Thanks for your amazing knowledge and detail OYBBK and Gloria. We have snow forecast pretty much constantly from Monday night through to the weekend Shock in south Durham, we're on higher ground than surrounding area, so stocking up on Biscuit Cake and Wine

GloriaSmud · 23/02/2018 21:46

It is indeed, OYBBK Grin

fredabear ~ I like your thinking when it comes to supplies!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2018 21:55

Good plan fred!

Trottersindependenttraders · 23/02/2018 22:03

Training it down from Cheshire to the Big Smoke on Monday for a meeting. Is it possible you could all hold the snow until my train leaves again at 17:30. Thanks awfully.
Thanks for the info OYBBK & Gloria, much obliged to you. Will take spare knickers & contact lenses in case Virgin call a halt to services at the first snowflake ❄️

Whatthefoxgoingon · 23/02/2018 22:11

I’d smuggle some chocolate and gin in that bag if I were you trotters, I once got stuck on a train for 6 hours. I think the cause was leaves on the track or some such nonsense Grin

Trottersindependenttraders · 23/02/2018 22:17

Yes! whatthefox, I like your thinking. Also fully charged Kindle would be a good idea.

Ironically I am meeting with our customer from Lithuania who will no doubt laugh her socks off if we grind to a halt in the snow. I’ve visited them there once before when it was thick with snow, minus I don’t know what and they donned their furs, their winter tyres and carried on.
