I'd caution everyone not to rely on the met office app output for ruling out snow. It will still be a case of keeping an eye on the actual warnings and the words written by the chief met officer underneath the warnings. A lot of the potential snow isn't being shown by the app. It's a computer generated snap shot.

We've now got a Level 3 Cold Weather Alert from the metoffice until next Thursday.

Cerrocoandblack · 23/02/2018 11:05

Thanks Gloria and Kitten.

Stocking up today!

GloriaSmud · 23/02/2018 11:16

Cerroco ~ think that's a good move!

gttia · 23/02/2018 11:23

Work have now issued their alert.

Cerrocoandblack · 23/02/2018 11:38

“It will be too cold to snow, a best a dusting”

Just been sent this by a mate whose husband “knows all about weather”

Hmm. Studiously ignoring her

BishopBrennansArse · 23/02/2018 11:52

I'm amazed by the number of people who just aren't taking this seriously.

I volunteer for an organisation that if it snows will have to close for health, safety and insurance purposes. I've been advising all service users who have tried to book with the service for Tuesday in particular that we have to close if the weather warnings prove to be true.

The level of dogged 'no won't happen' and refusal to have a plan b of necessary (and the service I work for you would need a plan b) is astounding.

Cerrocoandblack · 23/02/2018 11:53

Bishop, I think the media needs to take their share of the blame here, everyone is sick of apocalyptic weather warnings (Express I’m looking at you), so now they just ignore them.

It’s the boy who called wolf!

magimedi · 23/02/2018 12:07

People round here (East Sussex) seem to be taking it seriously. Several small businesses I was in this morning are making plans for snow next week.

The large Tescos was mobbed & people were definitely stocking up with milk, porridge oats etc.

BishopBrennansArse · 23/02/2018 12:25

Thing is cerroco this could potentially have dangerous consequences if there's no plan b put in place 😞

It's actively dangerous of the media to have hyped other stuff. They're not listening any more.

brizzledrizzle · 23/02/2018 12:28

I'm hoping that it comes to nothing, I don't have any spare cash to stock up on things at the moment Sad

jazzandh · 23/02/2018 12:30

Agreed, I have tried to message people I know who have vunerable/elderly friends and relatives to emphasise that this isn't another "Express" headline.

It is actually quite worrying, and I love the cold and snow!

SeaLionsOnMyShirt · 23/02/2018 12:47

DH doesn't believe that it will snow and it's all hype again (despite him usually believing in Kitten & Gloria when it comes to the weather!!). I have made plan B for my staff for next week in case we need to work from home, have checked the store cupboard & have lagged the outside pipe which froze in December and buggered up the boiler. He in the meantime is muttering about mythical snow not buggering up the football next week...!

SeaLionsOnMyShirt · 23/02/2018 12:48

Oh and thank you OYBBK & Gloria for this thread as well, we all appreciate it.

hoochymama1 · 23/02/2018 12:49

Thanks for this thread, and for being so on the ball Kitten and Gloria Thanks
Was due to swap houses with PiL next week in Norfolk, but am now cancelling, meh, not worth the risk. Especially after seeing that met office forecast. So true though, media hype in the past doesn't help, and it's a worry for vulnerable adults, as were just not set up for such cold temperatures Shock

Springiscoming123 · 23/02/2018 12:55

im stocked up and plenty of coal for the fire especially if electric goes

still nobody believes me

well im sorted and even if no snow i can atleast stay in and wont have t o go out (i dont work) i can watch it all from my patio doors

magimedi · 23/02/2018 13:02

Gloria & OYBBK are total Star Star

I look here for weather news before anywhere else.

(Even if I don't like the current forecast one bit!)

BiddyPop · 23/02/2018 13:14

OK, I guess that decides that - I definitely need to do the freezer check and proper (regular) grocery shop this weekend after a few weeks of "winging it" and using up bits.

But if we do end up having some time off work for weather reasons, I can slow down at home and have some fun in the garden with my Kelly kettle!! All toasty in my ski gear (that hasn't been used in a couple of years).

Although now that I've admitted that, it probably won't happen on our side of the Irish sea (but Met Eireann also has a warning from today until next Friday).

BiddyPop · 23/02/2018 13:16

Oh, and some extra logs for the fire wouldn't go amiss - we've used the burner a lot this winter and only have a few left.

GloriaSmud · 23/02/2018 13:18

Aw thanks everybody Blush
John Hammond's updated his weather blog.
You'd think when he comes out with, "I expect school closures, as well as major impacts on travel and other infrastructure," the media would take interest (or maybe they will now.)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2018 13:23

Too cold to snow Grin been a while since it's been cold enough to hear that one.
You can ask them where does the snow in the arctic come from then?

I think the media prefer news when we are actually having a crisis rather than the sort of news that could prevent a crisis.

The problem with the early part of the week is that some areas in the warning zones won't see very much, others may get loads. This is down to the nature of showers, but also because in these conditions showers can start to 'conveyor belt' with some areas seeing snow shower after snow shower. If any streamers set up then some places will see disruptive levels.

any recommendations for snow radar sites

thanks

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/02/2018 13:31

Just looking ahead slightly, for those who do get the snow starting on Monday, can I suggest that making an early start on clearing driveways and paths will be a good idea? Because it's going to be very dry and powdery snow it will be easiest to shift it and clear it before people trample all over it and make it icy.

It's not going to thaw quickly, so if you don't clear it (properly) it will turn icy.

The only caveat is that it's also going to be very windy, so depending on where you clear it, you might find it a bit of an ongoing battle!

For radar I really like the weather pro app. I pay for the premium version, but have a look at the free version first.

You can't tell the difference between snow and rain on the radar, but in these conditions it will all be snow.
