We have just booked a driving lesson for DD2 on her birthday which is 4th March. I don't know why because, it seems, every year since she has been born she has had snow on her birthday. Nothing on her sisters which is December but always on hers. This is one year I don't want it.

tapdancingmum · 21/02/2018 20:00

Forgot to say that we are in the Chilterns and on top of one of the hills so can sometimes be blocked in with the lower lying towns getting nothing! Makes for some interesting phone calls when the kids can't go to school because we are snowed in but 4 miles away at the bottom of the hill they have nothing. The amateur weatherman I follow on FB has been dishing out warning all day for next week. And, he's not usually wrong - he does it for his business.

notsomanky · 21/02/2018 20:26

Actually we did get 2 cm of snow just before Christmas, - we were down for Snowmageddon but our snow shield sprang into action and stopped at the 2cm! everyone was disappointed (work had me record an emergency phone message as we were expecting staff to struggle to get in)

BishopBrennansArse · 21/02/2018 20:33

@OhYouBadBadKitten the forum I read is telling people to not rely on just one run but they are massive rampers on there

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2018 20:34

sunflower sorry, it's means that one of the weather models is modelling cold rain, sleet and snow for 3rd March rather than the deep freeze that it was going for before and and that other models are still going for.

Effectively it means that things aren't set in stone and that while we need to be prepared, people also need to realise that it's not guaranteed to be really cold and snowy for very long. We just don't know yet.

The metoffice have done another Outlook (they must do two a day) and they're still mostly going for cold so maybe that breakdown showing for 3rd March is just a blip...

UK Outlook for Monday 26 Feb 2018 to Wednesday 7 Mar 2018:
It will be turning much colder next week. Monday and Tuesday will be mainly dry with sunny spells, but snow showers will develop across some eastern and southern areas, where fresh winds will make it feel bitterly cold. Through the rest of the week it will remain cold with an increased risk of ice, frost and snow showers. These will be heaviest and most frequent in central and eastern areas, and some spells of more prolonged snow are possible at times, particularly in the east and across southern England. The cold weather will continue into early March, with the northwest seeing the best of any brighter weather, and here it may be less cold at times, although brisk winds will continue to bring a marked wind chill.

UK Outlook for Thursday 8 Mar 2018 to Thursday 22 Mar 2018:
At the start of this period it is likely to be very cold across the UK, with widespread frost and brisk easterly winds from Continental Europe, making it feel raw. This will continue to bring the risk of significant snow across some southern, eastern and central parts of the UK, whereas towards the north and west it will be drier. As we head through the middle of March, there is a lot of uncertainty in the forecast, but it may start to turn more unsettled and less cold with the wettest and mildest weather spreading in from the southwest. In contrast, northern and eastern areas could remain colder well into March.

Im flying from Bristol on 2nd March AM (friday) and am now paranoid I'll be snowed in in South Wales, and /or flight will be cancelled. What do you think the chances are?

BishopBrennansArse · 21/02/2018 21:37

sossage from what I can see Wales and the West Country are less likely to see disruption. Wouldn't rule it out completely, though.

BishopBrennansArse · 21/02/2018 21:39

(Obvs compared to OYBBK and Gloria I'm rubbish disclaimer)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2018 21:44

spot on Bishop :)

I'll keep my fingers crossed, thanks.

Cerrocoandblack · 21/02/2018 23:10

I’ve just spent about 30 mins on the netweathee forums. Those lot love them some weather Grin

I understood about 4 words they said.

I just want to know if we’re going to get some snow in Essex? X

BalthazarImpresario · 22/02/2018 06:49

I love snow /snowmageddons but not now, the time has passed. There have been some lovely bright days recently that make me hopeful for spring and warmer temperatures.... Eurgh.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2018 08:03

Cerroco you have a very good chance, but I can't quantify the chance. I would be prepared.

Models still continue on a very cold theme for next week. If anything I'd say snow signals are higher in the east than they were, but no detail yet. I'm afraid that will be a short notice thing.

There's a question mark over how long the cold will last - whether it will start to recede around 2/3 of March. Again, too early to tell.

WordWeasel · 22/02/2018 09:20

How likely is snow in south Oxfordshire? I don't want to get my hopes up yet again, only to have them dashed. bitter

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2018 09:27

Difficult to tell at the moment Weasel, highest probabilities I'd say are around the east coast and penetrating in through the Wash and through the SE.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/02/2018 10:15

The 06z gfs run is beginning to roll out. It shows significant snow fall for the East on Monday and Tuesday, especially through Lincolnshire, East Anglia and Kent.

Remember it's just one model run....

brizzledrizzle · 22/02/2018 10:23

It's wonderfully sunny here and it's NOT raining Shock (yet....)

WordWeasel · 22/02/2018 10:28

Thanks, Badkitten.

GloriaSmud · 22/02/2018 11:05

Could be a little something for the south overnight next Thursday-Friday as a band of snow moves northwards.

Really don't want snow but it looks like we might get it here in the east. Still got vivid memories of a power cut years ago. The novelty of pretty white fluffy stuff quickly wears off when you're shivering in a freezing house for 3 days.
