met office be prepared warnings nothing too major for most, though some western and southern coastal areas could have quite a lively night tomorrow night.

(A little to get this thread ahead of the Storm Dylan one!)

Although we're under the warning for Wednesday, our strong winds are forecast to get going from 11pm tomorrow. Looks like it's going to be a windy/gusty night through 'til Wednesday lunchtime.

GloriaSmud · 01/01/2018 17:49

Actually, having had another look at the GFS, I'm wondering whether the metoffice might adjust their timings for the south slightly, as I think the high winds are due to start between 6-9pm tomorrow rather than midnight Wednesday, as they have at the moment.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2018 18:02

I'm not quite sure, I think you might be right. The worst squeeze in isobars looks to be around midnight for the SE, so before then for the rest of the south. I also wonder if they will refine it quite a lot, it's not looking that bad in the west away from the coast I think.

I just thought this one especially indicated it was all coming in a bit earlier than the warnings were indicating.
Have to see whether the metoffice agrees with one of us/both!

And it's been named StormEleanor.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2018 20:46

Funny name for a storm.
rail networks are beginning to issue warnings of disruption. Check before travelling wednesday morning.

Weather warnings for the south aren't there now ~ wonder if they'll be back later...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/01/2018 10:34

updated and upgraded warnings

Think we ought to start bumping this properly Gloria. People are going to be taken by surprise by this one. ALL of England and Wales are now in the warning. Severe gales along south coast and western coasts. Inland gusts 60mph and a squall line, which could produce some 'interesting' weather.

Think they were just refreshing Gloria. sorry, we x posted and I didn't see your post.

Oh joy, I am meant to be on a UK flight tonight Confused I already dislike flying!

GloriaSmud · 02/01/2018 10:55

Ah, thought the metoffice usually re-did their warnings about this sort of time!
That is a big warning area though and sort of matches up with this latest chart but yes, should try and keep this bumped as it's such a big storm.

Few bits from other websites:
The BBC ~ at least they've got it on the front page of their website which will help, and Netweather

Peak areas for potential issue are around the IOM, parts of Ireland, Pennines, then down by the south coast and especially SW.

Should arrive around 6pm this evening in Ireland and far SW, then by midnight across the Pennines and sometime after midnight for the south coast in general.

StormEleanor showing up quite well here.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/01/2018 17:09

oh nice! you can see the kink where secondary centre to the low starts to form. It's that kink that will produce the squeeze in the south.

I am in Cumbria tonight. Looks like it may be a windy night and a fun trip down the M6 tomorrow daytime.

Wonder how fast the storm will blow over - maybe tomorrow daytime will be fine.

GloriaSmud · 02/01/2018 18:40

Updated warnings ~ Amber warning issued

Notmyideamovingon · 02/01/2018 18:42

Thanks for this ladies

GloriaSmud · 02/01/2018 18:43

nannynick ~ you could be in for a noisy night there ~ at least you were able to get to Cumbria before the worst of it started!

WalkingWolly · 02/01/2018 19:06

Just came to have a look for this, DAily Fail seems to be predicting we’re all going to die!

GloriaSmud · 02/01/2018 19:24

They can be a bit like that, Walkingwolly, although on this occasion there is some truth to what they're going on about as the metoffice warning details says: Flying debris could lead to injuries or danger to life whilst some damage to buildings is likely. Some disruption to road, rail and air travel is likely and ferry services may be affected. There is a good chance that power cuts may occur with mobile phone coverage perhaps affected. Along west-facing coasts, injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, seafronts and properties.

Flooding has already occurred in Ireland.

nannynick · 02/01/2018 19:49

Gloria the drive was quite fun weather wise. Ice to start with near Balmoral. Then sleet and snow showers through Aberdeenshire and then lots of rain.

I hope that there will not be too much snow with this storm. Expect there will be a lot of rain tomorrow.

GloriaSmud · 02/01/2018 20:53

Ooo that does sound an 'interesting' drive, nannynick! Take care with tomorrows journey ~ you'll probably find there'll be a lot of surface water about and there will still be a yellow warning for strong winds until 6pm.
