Will Hurricane Ophelia manage to hit the UK?

Not been much in the news about it yet, other than a few small articles. Anyone else notice it's due to be getting very close to the UK?

Looks like it's still meant to be hurricane strength when it hits Ireland early next week, before taking a swipe at Scotland. I thought the water was meant to be too cold and they normally fizzle out into winter storms.

First British hurricane since Debbie in 1961?

Maudlin as I was writing it I thought 'oh I hope this is not contentious and there will be a sh*tstorm' Smile

treaclesoda · 16/10/2017 08:13

Maudlin You're in Tyrone? Are the trains all cancelled? Wink Grin

Met Eireann have advised people to stay indoors as per the photo. The website is starting to creak a bit, I guess it has a lot of traffic!

We have indeed, Rafals!
We have a strange light here too, the wind's dropped and a watery sun has just risen above the clouds over the sea. All very weird.

Maudlinmaud · 16/10/2017 08:16

None from me holly Grin
Please pray for Mauds trampoline

Maudlinmaud · 16/10/2017 08:17

Feck you Treacle with your good transport links. I have to go to portadown for that

The kids (and me) are loving this real time weather site. We are in midlands Ireland. Everyone at home. Going to get the dinner on early today in case power goes and have all the devices charged. We have full wheelie bins that we are put somewhere more shaded and I know there's a gym ball in the garden somewhere that I need to locate :-)

Businesses are offering accommodation to homeless people.

MayhemandMadness01 · 16/10/2017 08:24

I'm in Liverpool, strangest light here, not a breath of wind either. Just really weird!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2017 08:32

XCweather is an excellent site for keeping an eye on recorded windspeeds.

Ohb0llocks · 16/10/2017 08:34

Super strange light here and the ‘big rain’ has just started. Will snap a pic

Bringing in kids stuff from the garden, getting a wee bit nippy again.

kernowgal · 16/10/2017 08:42

Strong, warm wind here in Cornwall. It's gone very dark and eerie. There's a burnt smell on the wind too, can't quite work out what it is. We're all sat at work feeling edgy!

RedToothBrush · 16/10/2017 08:42

Outskirts of Manchester. Sky is greeny yellow. Looks like about to tip it down. We are outside warning area but think it'll be pretty dreadful later. Strangely eerie and dark.

Yeeeha · 16/10/2017 08:45

This is my favourite site for wind watching. Real time (ish) and you can zoom in and out and spin to any part of the earth.

Isle of Man here 🇮🇲

Schools all open but looks like we will get any wind on the east side of the storm coming straight up the Irish Sea.

RTE have quite a good Ophelia update page. All very quiet and still in Dublin so far, just very grey and damp. www.rte.ie/news/2017/1016/912622-storm-ophelia/

CollieBobs · 16/10/2017 08:46

kernowgal we smelt that too! Had no idea what it was! The clouds are a mix of brown and a greyish teal. And to think there's another "storm" forecast for Saturday! Gotta love the Atlantic

MayhemandMadness01 · 16/10/2017 08:50

Well, sky went lighter and a fraction bluer, a little wind not long after I last posted and now it's back to the strange light and no wind!

hollyisalovelyname · 16/10/2017 08:54

Electricity gone in parts of Kerry.Sad

LucyTheLocalBike · 16/10/2017 08:55

Cambrian Coast, Wales here. Opened the door and the heat hit me, though the winds are picking up a little now. Thunder and lightening at around 6am, no rain yet but the sky is the strangest colour. I think its going to be a long day

Pinkkahori · 16/10/2017 08:56

I'm in north Munster. The wind has picked up a lot but so far nothing we haven't had before.

Roundandroundtheapartment · 16/10/2017 09:03

South Wales here
Quite warm, about 17 degrees celcius
Slight bit of wind
Sky is that grey yellow colour, almost like thunderstormy weather, they eerie kind of sky

SlothMama · 16/10/2017 09:04

I'm in Cheshire the sky is such a weird colour and now the rain has started

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/10/2017 09:08

That's a brilliant website Yeeeha, thanks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2017 09:12

that was quick Holly!
Cork has recorded a gust of 63mph already. It has a couple of hours or so before it reaches peak winds I think.
