Will Hurricane Ophelia manage to hit the UK?

Not been much in the news about it yet, other than a few small articles. Anyone else notice it's due to be getting very close to the UK?

Looks like it's still meant to be hurricane strength when it hits Ireland early next week, before taking a swipe at Scotland. I thought the water was meant to be too cold and they normally fizzle out into winter storms.

First British hurricane since Debbie in 1961?

Oh, and power was out in county Clare last night about 8pm.

ZepellinBend · 16/10/2017 06:43

I've just woken up to a text from dc's school saying they will be closed today on the advice of the department of education (NI). Typically I'm already up but they will be overjoyed Grin

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 16/10/2017 06:45

Where are you Treaclesoda? We moved to Dublin in 2010 and we had 10 or 11 days of school closures (in two separate chunks) because of snow. That was very unusual though. I don't think there had been any snow closures since the early 1980s (when I was at school).

Makinglists · 16/10/2017 07:01

Morning - 18.6 degrees here in sw devon.1.7 increased on last night. Windy starting to gust.
Hope these in ireland stay safe.

treaclesoda · 16/10/2017 07:02

Black I'm in Co Antrim, but I've just realised that I was tired last night and got my years wrong and it's only 6 years of school so those two really bad winters were just before my eldest started school. Smile

treaclesoda · 16/10/2017 07:09

I have woken to very heavy rain, although no wind yet.

GloriaSmud · 16/10/2017 07:28

We had rain here (Exmouth) around 3.45am and wind started up at 5.45am.
To my very amateur eye, think the charts are showing the storm might have shifted very slightly west, so going up more the west coast of Ireland than middle-ish/east as was showing before.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2017 07:32

Morning all, little change to the forecast. Most of the models have the centre of ex-Ophelia grazing the western coast of Ireland then NI before curving in across Scotland. This puts the whole of Ireland where the most damaging gusts will be, but most especially, the SW.

Some remarkable temperatures overnight. Camborne reached 20.5c at 6am today.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2017 07:33

x post Gloria!

ZepellinBend · 16/10/2017 07:38

Is this change why they are warning here in NI the east and Irish Sea will see the highest winds? Where I am wibble

Makinglists · 16/10/2017 07:38

Just stuck my head outside and the warmth of the wind is very very strange. Sky turns no a very greeny/gray colour.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2017 07:40

It should have moderated some by the time the worst gets to you Zepelin, compared to Ireland. It won’t feel that way though probably!

last noaa update

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2017 07:41

I’m going to be in and out over today, but I’ll try and keep up with any forecast changes if they happen.

CollieBobs · 16/10/2017 07:45

Waves at the Cornish girls Smile

I couldn't sleep last night as it was too muggy! The wind has picked up a bit and the weather buoys off Ireland are recording 27ft waves. Eeep.

Hope everyone in Ireland is OK Brew

Weebo · 16/10/2017 07:46

Getting a little blustery/rainy here in Belfast.

Nothing we aren't used to yet. :o

ZepellinBend · 16/10/2017 07:46

Thanks kitten. Hopefully it will just be our usual shite weather by the time it reaches us Grin

Do feel for anyone more southwest and hope you all stay safe.

Footle · 16/10/2017 07:50

Kitten, your link at 7.40 is broken. Thanks for your useful work on MN by the way.

Maudlinmaud · 16/10/2017 07:58

Well myself and dd walked the dog anyway this morning. Popped into the shop to get some croissants and a new torch. Came home opened torch to find the batteries that came with it are rusted Grin
Good job I have shares in Yankee candle.
Thank you for whoever reminded me about flasks. I am so dense that it wouldn't have occurred to me otherwise.
Right now it just looks like a regular wet morning.

Weebo · 16/10/2017 07:58

Yes indeed thank you, Kitten!

This is the first place I came when I heard things were going to be bad where I live.

My mum rang yesterday in high doh telling us to batten down the hatches and making sure her beloved grandchildren weren't chucked out into the eye of the storm and didn't blow away going to school. :o

I thought 'I will just have a peek to see what Kitten has said before I tie a bag of bricks to each of the boys'

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/10/2017 08:01

Haven't stuck my head outside yet but the light/sky certainly looks an odd colour. Wind has either died down for a bit or changed direction.

You've certainly picked a week for a holiday in a caravan, Gloria.

treaclesoda · 16/10/2017 08:04

My cat is refusing to go outside. She knows things...Grin

hollyisalovelyname · 16/10/2017 08:05

Maudlin are you in Ireland or in UK ?

PickAChew · 16/10/2017 08:08

Stiller than it's been all weekend in ne England.

Horrible night's sleep. Too bloody hot.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2017 08:08

Footle, I’ve just checked the link, I’m not sure why it isn’t working. If you google Noaa, Ophelia and then go ‘discussion’ you will find it hopefully :)

Gloria, despite bravely sitting in a caravan is going to be tag teaming with me this week as after today, it’s all eyes on a possibly nasty looking storm on Saturday if the models verify. Nothing as exciting as a hurricane knocking on our doorstep, but still one to watch.

Weebo, just tie string to the boys ankles and fly them like a kite. Grin
The winds will be pretty stormy in the SW of Ireland by around 10am, the worst I think around midday.

Maudlinmaud · 16/10/2017 08:09

Holly bit of both depending on your politics Grin I'm in Tyrone.
