Will Hurricane Ophelia manage to hit the UK?

Not been much in the news about it yet, other than a few small articles. Anyone else notice it's due to be getting very close to the UK?

Looks like it's still meant to be hurricane strength when it hits Ireland early next week, before taking a swipe at Scotland. I thought the water was meant to be too cold and they normally fizzle out into winter storms.

First British hurricane since Debbie in 1961?

Yep it's windy in cork now. An adult would struggle to walk during the gusts

PortiaCastis · 16/10/2017 09:30

Seas getting very rough but not very windy yet and sky's a weird colour

HateSummer · 16/10/2017 09:31

It’s so hot here, is this normal?! I dropped the kids off wearing a coat and my forearms were sweating when I got home. Apparently 21°C today 😳

CocoaIsGone · 16/10/2017 09:31

West coast Scotland here, grey skies and rain, nothing unusual in that if I wasn’t watching the weather map! Just generally miserable weather, a bit like the way I feel

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/10/2017 09:32

Ok I’m off out now, but Met Eireann have upgraded the forecast gusts to 150kph. For those of us to the right of the Irish sea, that’s 93mph.

I hope that when I return at lunch time you’ll all still have power so you can let us know how you’ve been getting on (of course you need power for more important stuff too!)

my family farm is in Tyrone - we had a large tree self combust in the summer as it was rotten in the inside so only the outside left, suspect that's going to go. Hopefully it will miss the house.

Smashpumpkin · 16/10/2017 09:38

Winds really picking up here in County Down. Worst winds are meant to hit at 3pm and it’s already very blustery

FannyTheFlamingo · 16/10/2017 09:41

I'm meant to be on an EasyJet flight later and it's the ONLY flight not to be cancelled today arriving at my destination! I don't want to fly Sad Hoping it'll be cancelled later.

GloriaSmud · 16/10/2017 09:42

Sea getting choppy here (Exmouth) Sky is still a weird colour - other caravaners are coming out to look at it. I said to DH that it's the sort of colour we have before having heavy snow but it's way too warm for that! We're about to venture out for a while before the really high winds hit.

Twoevils · 16/10/2017 09:52

Those of you with a burnt smell - my brother has heard theory that the jet stream is carrying over ash from the wildfires in the US. Plausible?

HemanOrSheRa · 16/10/2017 09:53

I'm in Bristol and the sky is a very strange colour. As you say Gloria just like it is before snow. It's quite windy and although the sun is out it is bright orangey red Confused. DP is taking photos now!

Weebo · 16/10/2017 09:57

Will you be able to upload some photos, Heman?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 16/10/2017 09:58

Was about to say the same about the Sun, Herman. Just caught it through a gap in the cloud and it's red.

HemanOrSheRa · 16/10/2017 10:00

I've asked DP to send me a photo Weebo. He was on his way to work so he'll probably do it when he gets there. I definitely will post a pic at some point!

Ponyboycurtis · 16/10/2017 10:01

heman maybe we're neighbours (same city at least), finished school run and was amazed by the Sun, looks like a tangerine in the sky - and an orange hue in general outside!

Ninjakittysmells · 16/10/2017 10:04

Ds dad is in Galway and has been updating me - he said he is starting to get nervous now, which has worried me a bit as he isn't the type to flap.

LittleHo · 16/10/2017 10:07

Also near Bristol. Just checked on the sun. You are right, it is a weird glowing red colour.

Weebo · 16/10/2017 10:08

Thanks, Heman!

AFingerofFudge · 16/10/2017 10:13

Why is the sky such a weird colour OYBBK? (Gloucestershire) it's a weird yellow and red colour. A bit freaky!

Smashpumpkin · 16/10/2017 10:14

Ninjakittysmells I hope your dad stays safe!

NapQueen · 16/10/2017 10:15

Newcastle upon Tyne. The air is still, no breeze whatsoever, no birds, no noise. Weird darkness and random orangey glow across everything.

Monkeyinshoes · 16/10/2017 10:18

Lots of live streams on Youtube

Ninjakittysmells · 16/10/2017 10:19

Thanks Smash - it is DS dad not mine (I need to keep him safe too though for maintenance reasons Grin)

Nap I am in Newcastle as well - it is eerily still here I agree, so dark too. I keep taking photos because there is something just odd about the air.

TheElementsSong · 16/10/2017 10:23

West Yorkshire.

Last night I kept smelling a vague woodsmoke smell (all windows open because it was so muggy) and wondering who would have their log burner going in this heat.

Currently heavy mizzle/light drizzle. Similar to NapQueen the light is gloomy with a weird yellowy glow and not a hint of breeze.

ouchthathurtsabit · 16/10/2017 10:31

I have been smelling the burning too. Very weird in w Yorkshire. Muggy and foggy yet a cold breeze. Lots of birds in flocks looking confused.
