Will Hurricane Ophelia manage to hit the UK?

Not been much in the news about it yet, other than a few small articles. Anyone else notice it's due to be getting very close to the UK?

Looks like it's still meant to be hurricane strength when it hits Ireland early next week, before taking a swipe at Scotland. I thought the water was meant to be too cold and they normally fizzle out into winter storms.

First British hurricane since Debbie in 1961?

@honeyrider - that sounds like my kind of survival shopping!

Also, sorry for the bold shoutout, I forget on the phone that the * makes things bold Blush

AfterSchoolWorry · 15/10/2017 22:19

All quiet in North Dublin right now.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/10/2017 22:26

If there is ever an apocalypse I will be among the first to die. I went to Dunnes (supermarket) this morning to get something for lunch and was taken by surprise at how busy it was. It was only this evening that remembered that there is a big storm coming and all the sensible people were stocking up. We will be making do with leftovers and assorted things from the freezer.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 15/10/2017 22:26

She's got her priorities in the right order there, honeyrider.

honeyrider · 15/10/2017 22:36

It's the calm before the storm.

heateallthebuns · 15/10/2017 22:39

I was just in tescos in north Dublin. Massive queues - not buying matches, candles and bottled water. Mostly beer. In fairness most people looked like students.

Maudlinmaud · 15/10/2017 22:43

All schools in NI are to close tomorrow. Guess I'll be having a lie in.

Appin · 15/10/2017 22:45

I'm scheduled to fly from Edinburgh transatlantic tomorrow, early evening. Wondering how the weather will affect this, can't see anything on the airlines website.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2017 22:50

Maudlin, NI too? you guys are much more sensible there than we are in England when huge storms are due to hit.

Justaboy · 15/10/2017 22:50

Appin Doubt it will be a problem in a very short space of time you'll be the other side of the high winds and above them!.

The highest winds speeds aren't expected at Edinburgh airport until 22:00 hrs on Monday anyway. You should be long gone by then.

Maudlinmaud · 15/10/2017 22:57

Yes OYBBK. My dc have been talking about it all evening on social media and BBC news has just made it headlines.
I'm a wee bit unsettled now.

PurplePillowCase · 15/10/2017 23:03

in london commuter belt a big storm just makes people eyeroll when trains are cancelled...

treaclesoda · 15/10/2017 23:07

I've just had a message saying school is closed tomorrow. In all my life I have never known all the schools here to close due to adverse weather. And my kids school has never closed for any sort of bad weather in the seven years that I've had kids there.

It's very calm at the moment though.

Weebo · 15/10/2017 23:16

Same here treacle.

Not even a breeze.

Appin · 15/10/2017 23:22

Thanks Justaboy!

butterflymum · 15/10/2017 23:24

@treaclesoda, it seems to be due to the expectation that NI will have the strongest winds from c3pm, which of course would be the start of home time for primary schools then senior schools:

www.executiveoffice-ni.gov.uk/news/weather-warnings-school-closures-and-public-safety-information

agree, though, that this is an unusual occurrence.

DamsonGin · 15/10/2017 23:50

Hope you all have a good night and day tomorrow

mathanxiety · 16/10/2017 00:19

I wonder will the tide be sucked way out when the hurricane is still offshore, as happens when a hurricane hits the US, with a huge tidal surge accompanying the storm when it hits..

safariboot · 16/10/2017 00:25

Probably not. I don't think it will have the low central pressure and storm surge that a major hurricane has.

hollyisalovelyname · 16/10/2017 02:22

Eerily quiet here in Dublin.
Very few cars passing.
A lot of people have put their bins out. We didn't risk it.
Dcs have no school or college on Monday.

3luckystars · 16/10/2017 03:29

All is verr quiet here still. I wouldn’t have a clue anything is coming only for that map showing me the wind.
It’s very warm but so so quiet.

mumof06darlings · 16/10/2017 04:43

I'm in cork and I can hear wind and rain starting now. It's getting more gradual. I hope I have enough done in the garden and I must just move the cars away from the house. Getting v. Nervous. 6 of us here in the bed 😂

Ledkr · 16/10/2017 04:59

Good luck

Bluerosethorns · 16/10/2017 05:48

@mumof6 you will be fine, just stay inside and make sure everything is charged incase you lose power. Download some netflix etc on laptops incase! Torch and treats in Flowers

BiddyPop · 16/10/2017 05:53

Very calm at Dublin airport, early flights all getting sorted to go (am en route to warsaw myself).

Meanwhile, all schools have been closed, no buses until at least 2pm, my offices have been closed...I could really have done with a day off not 2 long days, 2 European cities and a load of very detailed technical meetings!

We went to dunnes for the first time in ages yesterday - pretty busy but seemed like normal weekly shopping getting done.

DH is at home having checked all the torches are out, filled the flasks with hot water, and checked that the camping gas 1 ring stove is in the shed (not in the storage unit a mile away with the other camping gear!🤣).
