Early early days and the models have been teasing us for a good couple of weeks now but we might be starting to get some model consistency. I've been holding off from saying anything in case we scare it away for good.

Massive caveat - amateur forecaster, often get it wrong yadda yadda. Please dont plan anything based on this thread.

GFS starts to show the european high pressure drift atlantic-wards next week, drawing in cold air. By next weekend we are showing a reasonable amount of potential with the upper air looking cold enough to support snow and less settled weather than at present.

Alas though, it only seems to last the weekend at present. But at the moment Friday is the day to keep your eye on.

I'm afraid I'm away from the computer now until late tonight, so I can't help with specifics until the morning.

Well it has completely dried up here, so if the forecast is accurate it's quite a good/bad sign. I have extra supplies in and a lovely new bobble hat and gloves courtesy of sainsburys sale. The sky looks full of snow tbh.

BeyondTheStarryNight · 11/01/2017 14:15

I looked this morning - two single flakes
I looked lunchtime - loads of snow
Checked again now and it's back to a few single flakes

Xmas Sad

BiddyPop (hope you don't mind me answering) Looks chilly but OK for Friday, for flying there and back.

Santas Good point about the recycling.

'Tis looking a real mess tomorrow when it comes to forecasting for the south tomorrow. Just seen both the national and local forecasts on BBC1, and their forecasts are reflecting the difficulty in whether it's going to be rain/snow falling. Think OYBBK is right ~ it could be a case of 'Nowcasting' rather than what the metoffice/weather websites are saying.

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2017 14:30

BBC report on the damage caused by the weather in Scotland and the North today.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 11/01/2017 15:13

Marking place for tonight! Fingers are crossed...although it has just occurred to me that I have to go out tonight from 7-9 and I don't especially fancy driving in snow. I'm in Midlothian and the BBC is forecasting snow for my area from 9 tonight.

BiddyPop · 11/01/2017 15:37

Thanks Gloria - DH has enough on his plate and I just want a reasonable idea of whether to expect him home at midnight or being on the blower finding accommodation and transport options instead of drinking wine and relaxing....

AllTheBabies · 11/01/2017 15:41

I'm in Glasgow and it's very blowy out there today. There have been a few sleety showers coming off the hills. I'm not holding out much hope for proper snow though, it still feels too mild out there.

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2017 17:11

AllTheBabies ~ The temperatures are going to drop away overnight so you may get more than sleet/light snow tomorrow and could get several cms. There's even a chance of thundersnow. Will feel really cold and bitter in those sort of conditions.

AllTheBabies · 11/01/2017 17:21

I'd better dig out the buggy that can handle snow then! Got to walk a mile to school in the morning! It must have been pretty much exactly this time last year we got snow because we had just taken dd2 home from the hospital and she was one at the weekend.

CafeAuLaitMerci · 11/01/2017 17:24

The 11yo will be beyond herself if we get snow, the 48 yo - not so much! I'm hiding the sled! 😬

notsomanky · 11/01/2017 17:31

We have gone from snow/sleet showers for most of tomorrow to now showing heavy rain all day, with the possibility of snow between 2000-2200.

I expect Manchesters snow shield to be fully operational shortly.

megletthesecond · 11/01/2017 17:43

We had thundersnow in 04 IIRC. It was rather armageddon-y.

DameDeDoubtance · 11/01/2017 18:05

notsomanky same here! Heavy rain from 12 which turns to snow from 8 till 10. I'm in East Kent. Fingers crossed it turns to snow earlier, would be epic!!

Ilikesweetpeas · 11/01/2017 20:33

Sad here, all of the snowflakes on the weather forecast have turned to rain (north west). Looks like that's all we're getting ...

GingerHollyandIvy · 11/01/2017 21:03

North London, BBC forecast now showing more snow for Thursday afternoon/evening - 3 hrs heavy snow, 3 hrs light snow, plus some light snow on Friday morning.

Polkadotties · 11/01/2017 21:24

Anyone know what Essex is meant to be like?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2017 21:37

I love thunder snow!

Heavy rain perhaps into snow people. Thursday night looks sub zero lasting into fri am. Ice could be horrific.

Pah, mostly back to rain now. Sad.

Mine spent all day yesterday changing snow>no snow>snow>no snow.

This morning it says no snow :(

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2017 07:58

It's a wait and see day! So far our temp is exactly where the met office forecast it to be, I was hoping to see it a little lower. The Euro 4 model has completely downgraded the potential for snow in the south today - it was looking very exciting last night. However, I still maintain it's a watch and see day, remember with snow the difference between rain and snow is but a single degree or two of temperature.

Late next week, after the warmup looks like it could be very cold with temps around zero but generally dry too with perhaps some incursions of snow showers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2017 08:02

As for elsewhere lots of snow for much of Scotland pretty much from the off today. Snow showers possible right across northern England.

AllTheBabies · 12/01/2017 08:06

Nothing in Glasgow city yet but I can see it on the hills. It's actually strangely calm. 1.5 degrees according to my thermometer. The sky to the west is looking quite dark though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2017 08:09

I'm really surprised that there isn't an amber warning for northern Scotland for tonight when severe gales and snow will make for quite a potent mix.
