Early early days and the models have been teasing us for a good couple of weeks now but we might be starting to get some model consistency. I've been holding off from saying anything in case we scare it away for good.

Massive caveat - amateur forecaster, often get it wrong yadda yadda. Please dont plan anything based on this thread.

GFS starts to show the european high pressure drift atlantic-wards next week, drawing in cold air. By next weekend we are showing a reasonable amount of potential with the upper air looking cold enough to support snow and less settled weather than at present.

Alas though, it only seems to last the weekend at present. But at the moment Friday is the day to keep your eye on.

I kind of like these wait and see days. One day late 2015 we were having quite a mild winters day, temp was 6 and it was quite clear. I was driving home and could see a cloud-mageddon heading my way across the valley - honestly it was so dark and looked like it was boiling inside. It went over and the car thermometer just plummeted from 6 to -2 and the heavens opened with thick feathery snow! It lasted about 10 minutes then just went on its merry way and the temp went back up to about 4. Was very odd!

Small person played netball last night and was fecking frozen by the time they finished (because of course you have to play netball in skorts & t.shirt, even when just inter school training, you couldn't possibly be allowed to wear the school tracksuit FFS. ...as the PE teachers watch looking like Michelin men in their layers). Anyway, I foolishly said 'Well, the good news is we might get snow tomorrow'. So, I hope for her we do and I hope for me we don't! (Too much driving to do today for everything to grind to a halt for half a dozen snow flakes).

AllTheBabies · 12/01/2017 08:21

I take it back. It's started!

Mummylin · 12/01/2017 09:07

I am praying for snow down here in Bournemouth, it usually passes us by. I need an excuse to wear my snow boots !!

PinkBunnyOnesieOnOrder · 12/01/2017 09:09

Oooh lovely babies. At least you're home from the morning school run! Did you get the snow buggy out? (LOL that sounds more fun that's than 'the buggy that can handle snow 😬) ☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️☃️

Delatron · 12/01/2017 09:46

This is interesting. Very much a wait and see situation in the south east I guess. Forecast keeps changing for where we are, at the moment BBC weather, met office and my phone are showing snow from 5ish (we're in Bucks). Though first thing this morning it was looking less likely. It's changing by the hour! Must stop obsessing about snow potential!!

Stokey · 12/01/2017 09:59

Morning - can any of you weather gurus point me in the direction of historic statistics about snowfall in the UK?

My Dds are super excited about the prospect of 5 o clock snow fall in London. Have been trying to temper it by saying it is more likely to be sleet but Dd2 - born in 2012 - has barely seen snow so can't contain herself.

BiddyPop · 12/01/2017 10:02

There;s snow on the hills outside the city, but it was a balmy 5 degrees going to the train this morning, and no real wind either so I was melted in my ski jacket after listening to the weather forecast. (And DD had a
meltdown about school, and I missed 2 trains because of that, and lost a ski glove somewhere between the house, school drop off and trek from car to train station - I know it wasn't on the platform as I had time to retrace my steps to the ticket barrier as I was sooo late I was waiting for the delayed 9am train - yesterday my plan was my normal 07.20!!).

Delays were due to a train malfunction....not problems on the line. And delays on the opposite line were due to operational difficulties...also not snow/ice.

PointlessUsername · 12/01/2017 10:36

Will any snow that falls in London settle?.

GloriaSmud · 12/01/2017 11:06

Stokey Does this help?
PointlessUsername Will start as rain but turn to snow this evening.

4.8C here (Leicester) Rain/snow showers can be seen showing up nicely here.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/01/2017 11:12

Just outside Edinburgh we have a light dusting. Come on and fecking snow! Before my 2pm meeting so I don't have to go in for it. It's clouded over a bit but it doesn't look like proper heavy creamy beige snowclouds.

Titsywoo · 12/01/2017 11:19

It really doesn't feel like it's going to snow. Its over 5 degrees and it doesn't have that 'smell' in the air (I'm in East Surrey by the Croydon border). I don't believe it's going to happen and it certainly won't settle after all the rain forecast!

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 12/01/2017 11:22

It's started raining in South Warks. We're right on the line of the snow here so may or may not get it. If we do you can guarantee it'll be during this afternoons school run.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/01/2017 11:24

WMIDS it started to spot with rain here at 10.30. I got a whiff of snow though on the breeze in aldi carpark... before the smell of diesel overwhelmed it.

the air/clouds was grainy over the sun.. and the clouds have a look of snow. (suburbs)

it is probably melting on the way down. ( centre of town

oour forecast has changed to more sleet/rain than snow this afternoon. (my fault for equipping the car with stuff required) but is for heavy snow overnight. probably melt by morning though. [grumpy]

HesSpartacus · 12/01/2017 11:24

Absolutely cats & dogs in the SW. Surprised there isn't a flood warning... I think our chances of snow are zero, but next week is looking more promising - basically, whatever the rest of the UK is doing (smothered in snow / basking in sunshine), Cornwall does the opposite Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2017 11:35

those whose rain is starting and are looking at the temps. The temperature will fall significantly later as the cold front goes through. Up to then you can expect the temp to stay well above zero and for it to be heavy rain. Then for some, the heavy rain will turn to heavy snow. The question remaining is where the 'some' will be.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2017 11:36

and as for it not settling, that is possible, but with clearing skies tonight there will be a lot of ice tomorrow.
If the snow is heavy enough, it will settle even with the preceding rain.

OP posts:
OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2017 11:38

met office have now issued warnings for the ice. Unfortunately I can't actually see the, as their page is broken.

PinkBunnyOnesieOnOrder · 12/01/2017 11:39

I'm in the SE (near Camberley). It's raining, it doesn't look or feel like it'll snow, but it may much later on. If it does, it won't settle because it's sodden underfoot. I can live with that, child will Not Be Impressed. Oops.

PinkBunnyOnesieOnOrder · 12/01/2017 11:41

Cross posted with The Wise One!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/01/2017 11:44

renewed warnings including for overnight ice.

Of course our very silly train station put down buckets and buckets of grit last night. Pointless given the heavy rain before hand!

PinkBunnyOnesieOnOrder · 12/01/2017 11:45

Actually, of course it'll bloody well snow later or be incredibly icy. I have to take the small thing to two after school clubs, one after the other, quite a distance apart & both involve me sitting in the car, so I'll be in the car from 2 until 9 tonight. Freezing my assets off! 😖😂

SpookyPotato · 12/01/2017 11:54

Just started snowing here in West Yorkshire but the ground is wet Sad

RigbySM · 12/01/2017 12:16

Raining here much earlier than met office predicted! Their app says a 5% chance of rain. I got soaked! North Essex

BlueKarou · 12/01/2017 12:48

Light drizzling rain in West Berks. Weather apps (BBC, which ones would I be better looking at?) suggest the cold and the snow will start around 5pm. But then it's supposed to be heavy rain now rather than a fine misting.
