Early early days and the models have been teasing us for a good couple of weeks now but we might be starting to get some model consistency. I've been holding off from saying anything in case we scare it away for good.

Massive caveat - amateur forecaster, often get it wrong yadda yadda. Please dont plan anything based on this thread.

GFS starts to show the european high pressure drift atlantic-wards next week, drawing in cold air. By next weekend we are showing a reasonable amount of potential with the upper air looking cold enough to support snow and less settled weather than at present.

Alas though, it only seems to last the weekend at present. But at the moment Friday is the day to keep your eye on.

I don't think anyone should be giving up on the snow scenario tomorrow until the day has actually finished. Whilst many won't see any, as I said yesterday, those that do could see some disruptive snow, occurring perhaps in the evening rush hour. Don't be fooled by heavy rain, it may give way to heavy snow.

Met office has us down for heavy snow at 5 and 6pm, Northants here Smile

ReedBunting · 11/01/2017 08:50

itsafunnyoldgame ooh you're right - We're Northants too. Didn't expect that!

RigbySM · 11/01/2017 08:54

We're down for a lot of heavy rain, fingers crossed it turns to snow!

Maudlinmaud · 11/01/2017 08:57

Morning. That wind last night eh?
We have heavy snow forecast for tomorrow, rural NI. My car is shit in the snow so I'm not exactly looking forward to it.

InMySpareTime · 11/01/2017 09:05

Late snow would be good for me, if it's too early they might cancel the PIL's train home and I'd have the "pleasure" of their company for even longer...

Itsafunnyoldgame · 11/01/2017 09:33

My kids are desperate for snow Reed, Ds2 has football training at 5.30pm though so that may get called off, saying light snow through the night into Friday now.

Perihelion · 11/01/2017 09:39

Oooooh possibly a light dusting of snow for us in Edinburgh tonight and tomorrow. Although with the wind at the moment it will just go sideyways straight into the sea.
Windy overnight, with gusts over 70mph on the Forth Bridge. Bridge now shut because some numpty thought they could ignore the high sided vehicle restrictions, with the result that their lorry is now on it's side in the opposite carriageway......arse.

aginghippy · 11/01/2017 09:59

I'm in London. Met Office is predicting heavy rain for most of the day tomorrow, then after sundown the temperature drops, the wind picks up and it changes to heavy snow.

My Monday evening plans were cancelled due to the tube strike. I'm now imaging Thursday's plans cancelled due to snow.

GingerHollyandIvy · 11/01/2017 10:02

Heavy snow for North London for a few hours tomorrow night predicted.

ghostspirit · 11/01/2017 10:12

The snow needs to fuck of. am I the only snow grump here?

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2017 10:14

While Leicester's not in the warning zone, we're now forecast snow heavy rain turning sleet-ish about 3pm, then heavy snow from 4pm.
I wondered whether that rain moving across from the SW/Wales would turn to snow for us, it seemed to be stretching it a bit that with the cold temperatures that it would just stay as rain. So we'll see what falls from the sky tomorrow.

ghostspirit · 11/01/2017 10:15

Anyway if it does snow but them disposal gloves put them under your wooly one. So when you make snow man or throw snow balls at the kids. Your hands won't get so cold that they sting.

BiddyPop · 11/01/2017 10:31

Ghostspirit, that's a very clever idea!

I am half wanting to call school about the "snow team" - to see if it's still operational (I was on it and don't know if I need to be ready for a call) but our forecast is still for cold but very dry weather so I am not going to panic just yet. Although I will go down to the storage unit tomorrow for my ski gear just in case (I have all our regular winter gear, including hats, scarves and gloves, at home, but our snow boots, snow trousers and most of our thermal layers are safely stored - and between it not being open late tonight and having visitors and a committee meeting, I can't get them until tomorrow night after work).

And I'd better stock up on sausages too, just in case we get enough covering the ground to call ourselves "snowed in" and hold the regular "snowed in BBQ" on the green with all the neighbours!!

BiddyPop · 11/01/2017 10:32

It's definitely windy here today though!

Frouby · 11/01/2017 10:58

Watching this thread with interest. We live in south Yorkshire and it's very windy here with a noticable chill to it.

Dp works in Coventry which is quite a way away from us and is alternating between planning on nicking my 4wd truck and having a snow day Friday. He is self employed so it does hit our pocket if he can't get in.

Dd is planning a snow day from school already. Ds is excited for snow but at 3 doesn't appreciate how fecking cold it is. He hates the cold and wind even more than the dog!

hollinhurst84 · 11/01/2017 11:05

I keep my horse at a place in the NW which appears to have its own weather system Grin
Few miles away will be rain, as I get near the stables it can be thick, heavy snow. Bizarre. I'm expecting snow!

OnionKnight · 11/01/2017 11:07

Any predictions for Essex?

LadyFlumpalot · 11/01/2017 11:28

That's interesting.

I live in the hills of North Dorset. It can be raining here but 3 mins away at the top of the hill it can be laying snow.

An hour ago the weather forecast for my postcode was heavy rain, then a bit of sleet. Now it's heavy rain then all of a sudden heavy snow for a good few hours.

The forecast for the top of the hill though, has downgraded from snow to sleet and rain. Any ideas why that might be OYBBK?

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2017 11:54

Lady Flumpalot I think it's a reflection on how the models/metoffice are struggling a bit with that weather front but also on how difficult it is to forecast snow in this sort of situation. You'll probably find it'll change again in another hour or two!

OnionKnight you're under the same weather front as me ~ rain but may turn to snow in places tomorrow and possibility of further snow Friday and Saturday.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2017 12:02

updated warnings with increased risk for snow and ice for the south.

BishopBrennansArse · 11/01/2017 12:03

Bring it ooooonnnnnnnnnnn...

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/01/2017 12:11

I think its time to step away from examining the met office 5 day output in minute detail for today. The details will keep changing and it wont be until it is actually underway tomorrow that we know whats going to happen iyswim. Tomorrow in the south it is going to be a hideous day. Windy heavy rain, very cold and then for some turning to heavy snow with gales.

Please, please keep an eye out of the window if you need to travel tomorrow evening in the south. Its the sort of conditions that if it turns, you could be stranded. Don't be a shopper who has to sleep overnight in Ikea Wink

I've been neglecting those in Scotland. I'm really sorry, with nasty gales and then snow tomorrow you have plenty on your hands too. Its the timing of the weather down here and the fact that the rain will trick people into thinking its ok. Not much experience with snow for people down here! I've been really short of time, so its been difficult to do everyone justice.

BiddyPop · 11/01/2017 12:39

OYBBK - any idea how it will be in Nottingham on Friday?

Should I be getting back into my 2010 mindset of having backups already planned in my head to get all the stranded members of my family where they need to be, or will DH get in and out in the 1 day (flying) and home to me for our much-longed-for quiet family weekend (at home in Dublin)?

Much appreciated, ta, if you do get a chance to look.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 11/01/2017 13:04

We now have snow forecast for tomorrow afternoon! From 3pm, so DD will be happy to walk home in it if the forecast is accurate.

Doesn't look like we'll get much, but some is better than none. It's desperately windy here today - recycling collection day & the amount of fallen bins and litter around the place is huge.

As an aside, please remember to be careful about what you put in your recycling bins folks. Litter just picked out of the bush in my front garden includes somebody's bank statement (complete with name, address, account number & sort code) and a confidential letter regarding somebody's life insurance policy Shock.
