Early early days and the models have been teasing us for a good couple of weeks now but we might be starting to get some model consistency. I've been holding off from saying anything in case we scare it away for good.

Massive caveat - amateur forecaster, often get it wrong yadda yadda. Please dont plan anything based on this thread.

GFS starts to show the european high pressure drift atlantic-wards next week, drawing in cold air. By next weekend we are showing a reasonable amount of potential with the upper air looking cold enough to support snow and less settled weather than at present.

Alas though, it only seems to last the weekend at present. But at the moment Friday is the day to keep your eye on.

Ooh yes, they've updated warnings to include the South East. I am in some weird microclimate in Bucks where it hardly ever snows, even when there's snow a couple of miles away. Fingers crossed..

RatOnnaStick · 10/01/2017 14:08

Ooh. For once I'm in the snow zone. That never happens.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2017 14:18

those in the south - the probability is low, but if it occurs, the impact could be high. You won't know til it's happening, so if you have to get home from somewhere thursday evening, just keep one eye on the window. It's the sort of scenario that can cause chaos if it comes off.

oh bugger, I'm coming home from a hospital appointment late Thursday afternoon by bus, can the snow not wait till say 7pm before it starts, to make sure I'm home safely?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2017 14:54

Myvisions, probability suggests you'll be fine, no guarantees though.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 10/01/2017 14:58

thanks Kitten though sods law says that the snow will come early and stop me getting to the hospital, as I've waited a very long time for this particular appointment (first became ill with this thing a year ago tomorrow Shock).

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 10/01/2017 15:04

We're in the Midlands and forecast nothing but "light snow showers" for about an hour on Friday.

DD is 5 and has never seen "proper" snow. She's desperate to go sledging!

Most of the time it's an advantage to live in an area that doesn't really 'do' weather - but not always!

HesSpartacus · 10/01/2017 15:25

OYBBK - looking ahead, Netweather's snow chart for the latter part of next week is looking very interesting (even for the far SW where it last snowed in early 2010, so it must be going to be cold) as far as snow goes. What do you think? Any truth in it?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/01/2017 15:43

I'd like to see what happens with Thursday and perhaps the weekend first Spartacus :) This weekend seems quite pivotal in terms of what happens next week, but it's being rather tricky as you can see! (I might have a look tomorrow!)

I am so excited we are in the zone now, forecast heavy rain in East Kent from 3pm Thursday, but who knows. Grin

PseudoBadger · 10/01/2017 16:40

Sounds like the December 2010 event maybe. Do you remember in the early 2000s it seemed to snow in the last weekend in January for about 3 or 4 years in a row? I miss snow.

marthastew · 10/01/2017 16:48

In SE and just stocked up on formula and biscuits. Won't happen now that I have enough aptamil and hobnobs to last until 2018.

ThornyBird · 10/01/2017 18:10

hespartacus I remember watching the fire fighters trying to put snow chains on the fire engine (we live next to the fire station), clearly it wasn't something they'd needed to practise much.

I am still quietly optimistic that it will snow here although we're no longer under the yellow bit on the last map I looked at Sad

hilbil21 · 10/01/2017 18:20

I live about 30 miles north west of Glasgow and am due to be travelling by train to Derbyshire on Friday. It would be typical if the one weekend I actually have planned to do something I can't travel because of weather Angry

CatThiefKeith · 10/01/2017 18:29

Utterly confused by conflicting websites. Local news says 10-20% chance of snow on Thursday, while metcheck has us at 70% chance.

Desperate for some snow here. 5yo dd can't ever remember seeing snow.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 10/01/2017 18:53

I have a yellow weather warning for snow where I am on Thursday & heavy rain on the forecast. I'd like some but would prefer it next week.

HesSpartacus · 10/01/2017 21:10

Thornybird Do you remember this chaos? I think people were told it was going to snow and went 'yeah, right - it never snows here..' Famous last words.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/4471790.stm

Sadly, Netweather have revised their snow prediction, though Metcheck has snow over Cornwall for this week. So who knows?

ThornyBird · 10/01/2017 22:45

HesSpartacus we weren't living in Cornwall then so it passed me by completely Smile

We moved here in 2009 and were told it never snowed in Cornwall, then had 2 winters with snowfall (not a lot but more than none Wink).

That said, last winter I think we only had 3 frosts and were still mowing the grass in December!

Heavy band of rain moving over us on Thursday, local weather now saying it may turn to snow. I hope so, I would love a Friday snow day so much. Just have to wait and watch the sky. I love rain as well so either is cool. though obviously one is waaaaaay cooler than the other.

Ditsyprint40 · 11/01/2017 06:53

Please snow!

Nellyphants · 11/01/2017 06:57

I'd like it to snow heavily on Thursday night so I can't go to work Friday, please please

megletthesecond · 11/01/2017 07:24

Heavy rain forecast now, with a smidgen of snow at the end. (N.hampshire).

I'm now clinging on to next week's possibility.

DameDeDoubtance · 11/01/2017 07:33

Same as ours meglet, but at least it's something, there's snope (snow hope.)

GloriaSmud · 11/01/2017 07:49

still in the 'no snow zone'

'Tis very blustery though and the temperature's dropped from 11.7C at 6.15am to 9.3C now.
