I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

I don't usually get to check the Alaskan sites because I'm in work. There's a terrific show on the Ron Murray webcam at the mo.

Lovely clear skies at Abisko sky station at the mo and the sun is just setting. Combined with the solar storm a couple of days ago, we could be in for quite a show tonight.

Green showing there already

DustBunnyFarmer · 16/11/2014 16:32

I should have refreshed! This was the transition from daylight to nightfall, with the aurora already kicking in. It is now dark and a beautiful starry night with aurora in full swing.

And another of the day/night transition.

And they're off - no messing about tonight!

I think we're in for a good evening, Badger. What a shame we only have a 6 picture daily ration! Looks like i have already used mine up with the Alaskan pictures this morning.

Looking on the EU site, it's up to 4kP and the range showing on the map is almost down to the Shetlands/northern Scotland. Iceland will probably see the lights tonight.

'Tis looking like another good night. I'm especially looking forward to seeing if Iceland have any. I know the webcams aren't great (a bit like watching an early form of television from the 1930s!) but it gives an idea of colours. Looks like there's a hint of green on the horizon of the North Finland webcam.

GloriaSmud · 16/11/2014 19:52

Some lovely colours here.

Am I doing something wrong? All I see on the cams you have linked is blackness...

DustBunnyFarmer · 16/11/2014 20:07

Hi Nikki. There are more links in the thread. The most recent pictures are from Abisko Sky Station in Swedish lapland. Lots of the EU cameras are dark, as are the Icelandic ones (which are much lower resolution than the Abisko sky station and the Alaskan ones linked to up thread).

Seems my picture posting rights have been reinstated - just in time!

Oh wow, DustBunny!
Looks like the Aurora's beginning to show through the clouds in North Finland.
All quiet in Iceland so far.

DustBunnyFarmer · 16/11/2014 20:52

Glorious!

Now all we need is some blue - apparently that's Nitrogen getting some electromagnetic welly and less frequently seen. This green/red stuff is oxygen getting walloped.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 16/11/2014 21:10

I didn't know that. Yes, some blue would be nice.

GloriaSmud · 16/11/2014 21:18

Some info on the different colours here. Looks like the clouds are beginning to clear North Finland way.

PseudoBadger · 16/11/2014 21:40

So lovely

The Icelandic camera at Hotel Ranga is getting going, but it's such crap footage compared with the Abisko sky station.

The north Finland camera is lit up green. I can tell it is diffuse aurora rather than cloud because I can see the stars through it. (Thank you Wikipedia for that.)

I haven't seen anything on the Icelandic ones so far. Abisko has been been beautiful and made up for it though!
