Armchair aurora watching

I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

I was thinking about the new season thread on the way to work this morning (saddo emoji) and decided we should cap it off with a few 'showcase' pics from this season's thread. The purple-pink starburst curtain aurora at Abisko immediately came to mind. Any other faves?

RomComPhooey · 26/08/2015 18:22

Oh yes, we should add the aurora Australis and South Pole stations for the summer months.

GloriaSmud · 28/08/2015 10:30

Ooo good idea! I loved this one (I remember taking a screenshot of it last December at some silly time of the morning when I wasn't sleeping well) and I've got it saved as one of my screen saver pictures.

Bingo! That's exactly the one I meant, Gloria.

RomComPhooey · 28/08/2015 20:20

Have you had the amber aurora alert today? I am signed up to the Lancaster Uni service.

RomComPhooey · 28/08/2015 20:29

OK, last post for now - honest. Just noticed the southern hemisphere aurora watch webpage is at 5.69kp. Assuming it's the same at both poles and is sustained until after sundown, that would be visible as far south as Scotland tonight if there are clear skies.

GloriaSmud · 28/08/2015 21:44

Yes, got the alert from L.U. Bit short-lived but hopefully something to be seen tonight/over the next few nights!

RomComPhooey · 28/08/2015 21:48

OMG OMG OMG. We are only 16 (now 15) posts from the thread topping out.

RomComPhooey · 28/08/2015 21:50

Gloria, I tried cutting and pasting your post upthread to start the new season's thread. The links don't work. Do you have it in a document that you can just paste into a new thread? I really don't mind if you want to start this year's one - I'm not at all precious about it.

GloriaSmud · 28/08/2015 21:50

Just found another possibly useful webcam ~ one at the University of Tromsø.

RomComPhooey · 28/08/2015 21:58

Good one, Gloria.

GloriaSmud · 28/08/2015 23:10

I've got all the links saved in Draft (thank goodness I didn't delete them after posting!) 'Tis a bit late for me now but I'll either start the thread tomorrow evening or add them near the start of the new one.

RomComPhooey · 28/08/2015 23:14

Do start the thread when you get the chance, Gloria - it will make a big difference having all the links in the OP.

My favourite Alaska cams - good for daytime watching in the UK.

PseudoBadger · 29/08/2015 08:52

There have been good lights consistently from the north of Scotland this week, right down to Anglesey/Donegal/Northumberland on Thursday night.
Here's an Alaska photo from Thursday night and a Shetland one too

If you do FB I really recommend Aurora Hunters UK and Orkney Aurora Group

GloriaSmud · 29/08/2015 20:22

Nice one from Shetland there, Pseudo. I sometimes find it hard to believe that this country can get Aurora colours as nice as any north European country!

RomComPhooey · 29/08/2015 20:24

This is message 995 - axe will fall at 1000!

GloriaSmud · 29/08/2015 20:25

Perhaps should 'advertise' this ~ just started a new thread all ready for the 2015/16 season here!

RomComPhooey · 29/08/2015 20:51

Thanks Gloria!
