I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

It's looking great tonight in Finland.

Another Alaskan camera to bookmark, though nothing doing at the mo: www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/astronomy/auroramax/hd-480.asp

It's just starting with some green on the usual Alaska cam

PseudoBadger · 17/11/2014 13:40

Some green aurora and clear skies on the North Finland and Porjus webcams at the moment.

GloriaSmud · 17/11/2014 19:50

Wow ~ Porjus and North Finland looking lovely at the moment.

Finally something on the Porjus cam - I thought those ones were duds!

GloriaSmud · 17/11/2014 19:56

I know ~ I thought Porjus suffered from permanent cloud!

GloriaSmud · 17/11/2014 19:58

For such a low 'aurora level' (1.33), some of the webcams sure are beautiful tonight.

GloriaSmud · 17/11/2014 20:01

Is this some of the rare red aurora colour showing at Porjus?

Thanks for posting pictures earlier, Gloria and Badger. We've had guests who have just left, so only just had the chance to check in. Porjus looked promising earlier this evening because I could see the stars for the first time in days - seems it did not disappoint!

And it is still going strong...

And another... (I really should go to bed, early start and all that.)

Gloria - On the colour front, the wikipedia page says red and green/green-yellow are oxygen and relatively common, though red less less than green. It is the blue shade that is less frequently seen (nitrogen).

Incidentally, the Abisko fisheye lens on the EU site is up for the first time in days & showing activity, but the Abisko sky station seems to have crashed - bloody typical! Kiruna also looking busy.

Weird!

Oops! I didn't read my own link got my rare Aurora colours mixed up a bit there! But it was lovely to have a change and see the red as well.

GloriaSmud · 18/11/2014 17:21

Porjus is off to an early start this evening!

I agree, Gloria. I scrolled back through the thumbnails to sun down & thought this was a beauty too.

The lights at the Abisko sky station are absolutely lovely this evening. The red and deeper green are lovely against such a dark starry night. Going on the moon phase on the EU site, the moon has waxed considerably over the last week and is down to 14% full. I hadn't appreciated what a difference it would make to the inkiness of the sky, but it's definitely something to consider if any of us get around to booking a trip to see the lights.

Some of the older Abisko photos from the rump end of the thumbnails are gorgeous too. I'm going to post one before they disappear off the end of the photo stream.

When Porjus manages to shrug off the frequent cloud cover, it does not disappoint!
