Armchair aurora watching

I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

More from NZ

Aurora reading is currently 4.6KP, which means the north of Scotland should have a show tonight if they have clear skies and the aurora may be visible further south. Fingers crossed.

Wikipedia says 5+KP = geomagnetic storm. Woo hoo!

Just realised I've been saying NZ when it's Tazmania Blush
They have amazing stars don't they!

DustBunnyFarmer · 17/08/2015 20:23

I know - beautiful!

There's a webcam on Shetland here which might be useful if we get aurora in the northern hemisphere tonight, although I can't tell which way it's pointed and my macbook doesn't like it.

DustBunnyFarmer · 17/08/2015 20:27

Sumburgh Airport and Shetland Museum webcams also have a lot of sky in shot. Possibilities?

Evening all. I bolloxed up my old log in, but I'm still here.

GloriaSmud · 18/08/2015 20:50

Evening DustBunny.
Owing to a graphics card problem, I've not been able to post the last few evenings but now I'm back in business, only to come back to....not a lot! (according to spaceweather) Not much going on at the moment but aurora has returned to the Arctic so hopefully things happening on the N. European/Icelandic webcams can't be far away now.

DustBunnyFarmerRedux · 18/08/2015 22:09

It is nearly the end of August when Abisko and Yellowknife return...

DustBunnyFarmer · 19/08/2015 19:09

Finally made it back in as me. Now, what's occurring in the southern hemisphere? Too much daylight in Antartica, by the look of things - which bodes well for the northern hemisphere...

I would say there's some aurora here

Excellent camera sleuthing there, Badger (and good to see you back too).

It's funny, but I usually approach autumn and the shortening days with a bit of gloom and trepidation as the dark gets me down. This year I'm seeing a definite silver lining & it's cheered me right up.

OP posts:
PseudoBadger · 19/08/2015 19:57

When shall we get a new Autumn thread going?

DustBunnyFarmer · 19/08/2015 20:04

We are up to p39, so this one will be full soon anyway. Only another 30 or so posts & we'll be done.

Was it Gloria who's started a draft thread for next year with all the camera links? I think we should also have a Spaceweather link in our new OP - both to the main landing page and the aurora gallery landing page.

Incidentally, this photo has confirmed pretty much what I always suspected - namely that the pristine Finnish Lapp fells and lakes are much better with snow than in the summer, when you would be eaten alive by the insects.

Photo of the aurora from the International Space Station in today's Telegraph. (Also catch the baby sugar glider at #1 in that photo stream if you want a cute overload.)

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 19/08/2015 22:24

Aw, that's a cute sugar glider and a nice one from the ISS.

About the list I had of aurora websites, wellllll (and this sounds like a 'the dog ate my homework' excuse!) before I had problems with my graphics card I had to have a new hard drive as well and I've just realised that all my lists I had in 'draft' have been lost. I will put myself in detention and do a new list!

New name, same slatternly ways.

Faint aurora on the Porjus webcam - our first northern hemisphere sighting of the season!

Nice name change and well spotted, seeing the first N. Hemisphere aurora as well (perhaps you should have the honour of starting a '2015/16 Armchair Aurora watching' thread ~ as we're getting closer towards that time of year!)
