I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

I know, everything except the Alaska cams are uninspiring to me right now. And they're obvs no good at the moment!

Pseudobadger · 24/02/2015 21:30

If you're on facebook I follow a couple of UK groups with some great Orkney photos most nights?

DustBunnyFarmer · 24/02/2015 21:48

I don't do FB, Badger, but thank you for the suggestion.

Anyway, I stand corrected. Kilpisjarvi is still live. It's just boring B&W, is all. Meh.

Some overnight loveliness at Abisko.

From a few minutes ago at Abisko.
Seems one of my favourite webcams at North Finland is going to be out of action for the rest of the Aurora season due to a 'hardware malfunction' Sad

Oh no Gloria!

Lovely shot of Abisko.

I was talking to a Finn earlier this week & she said February half term was best for skiing and seeing the lights, as there is a lot of cloud cover earlier in the season.

It's a shame that North Finland has gone down (and quite a few on that website are having problems at the moment) if this month one of the best times to see Aurora.
On a positive note, spaceweather mentions that the earth passes through a fold in the heliospheric current sheet (yes, my face is all >> Confused at what that is as well!) tomorrow which improves the chances of high latitude aurora.

DustBunnyFarmer · 28/02/2015 10:00

Some lovely shots from last night. I'll do the sequence, though I can only attach 3 to each post.

And the rest. (I know the aurora is not especially bright, but the colours are lovely.)

An evening one from yesterday at Abisko (I tried to post it last night but our internet was being monumentally slow!)

GloriaSmud · 04/03/2015 06:44

And a pretty good one from overnight!

DustBunnyFarmer · 04/03/2015 06:47

Thanks Gloria. I noticed it was getting going at about 9pm but then fell asleep on the sofa and missed the action.

And we have lift off for this evening!

I was just about to screen shot that one, Gloria, but decided to check here first. You beat me to it!

Ooo nice Abisko one (my internet's been playing up again so have only just got to see your screen shots from last night) and interesting effect caused by the camera being half covered by snow/ice at Kiruna.

DustBunnyFarmer · 05/03/2015 21:55

I notice that Badger's not been about for a bit, but the moon is waxing gibbous/99%, so she usually gives us a miss around now.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 06/03/2015 21:36

The moon is tending to spoil things once again. This though was Abisko about 1/2 an hour ago ~ there always seems to be a burst of aurora activity at about 9pm of an evening at the moment!

Lovely sunset + aurora at Abisko this evening.

Armchair aurora watching
GloriaSmud · 07/03/2015 19:42

Abisko seems to have faded but Porjus1 is still going strong!

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/03/2015 22:28

Yay! Thanks for posting. I'm on limited internet this weekend. Keep 'em coming...

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 07/03/2015 23:12

'Fraid it's all died down and Abisko's gone all cloudy. 'Tis going to be another session in the morning of reviewing the overnight Abisko pictures!
