I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

I think there might be some purple colours showing at Muonio (won't do a picture as only got 2 left)

DustBunnyFarmer · 16/02/2015 21:30

Yes, I saw dark purple at Muonio earlier. It doesn't show up terribly well on photos anyway, so I won't waste a photo.

Another interesting shot on the Porjus fisheye. It's very frustrating that Abisko is so blurry, as I reckon it'll be cracking this evening.

It is amazing isn't it. I check every day and these are fab - just found out PIL are about to go on a Northern Lights cruise - I am very green but being very gracious.

You had dropped off my TIO - I always get a bit bored when there's. Moon around i'm afraid...

GloriaSmud · 17/02/2015 07:41

Welcome back, Badger ~ the moon does make things difficult.
Great stuff at Alaska at the moment and one from overnight at Abisko.

A good aurora forecast at the moment and there was a very pretty sunset at Abisko this evening.

Good morning Alaska

Thanks Badger.

Some good ones from last night in the UK here - Whitley Bay.

Lovely pictures from Whitley Bay there, DustBunny. I didn't realise that you could get such lovely Aurora colours even in this country.
Alaska's showing a hint of green at the moment.

In other news, the live stream from the International Space Station ~ they've changed the camera view! They seem to do this regularly but this one is more 'face on' to the earth's surface.

DustBunnyFarmer · 19/02/2015 22:12

One of the articles I found yesterday by googling "aurora borealis images 17 february 2015 uk" included photos and an embedded video clip of the aurora seen from the ISS earlier this week - well, aurora and daybreak in the same shot over the eastern seaboard of the US.

I got all excited earlier to see Tromso and Longbyearen (sp?) back on the aurora cams page, then realised they are stuck on dates in January and December. Hmm. I've also been wondering if Abisko has got stuck again, as it seems very bright for this dark phase of the moon.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 19/02/2015 22:46

Someone seems to have come along and given it (the Abisko camera) a kick because it's gone suddenly from light blue sky in one 'photo' to dark with hints of green Aurora!
Aw, I was getting excited to see the other webcams back but didn't realise that they were old views.

DustBunnyFarmer · 20/02/2015 00:02

So they have. I feel like we need a descriptive phrase for tonight's conditions at Abisko, as it seems to be a regular occurrence. The intensity of the colour and the blurriness reminds of one of the kids' picture books, which is an illustrated poem about tigers "on the landing, outside my bedroom door" (but - SPOILER ALERT - is actually noisy central heating pipes). I'll give it some thought. If I can turn out the picture book, I'll upload an image to give you an idea of what I'm on about.

It's worth going through last night's Abisko photo stream, as there were some really nice shots. I like this one because of the contrast between the dark, starry sky, the lights and the cloud bank. It's not one of the most dramatic ones, but I really like it.

Abisko is springing to life & it's quite a clear night - worth keeping an eye on.

Abisko is lovely at the moment - lots of green ribbon type aurora. 'Tis very pretty (and unfortunately I'm on my tablet and can't do pictures - will try and remember to look back at tonights show and post some tomorrow)

PseudoBadger · 22/02/2015 23:09

Gorgeous Porjus!

This was a nice one just as it was beginning to get light.

A bit blurred but lovely stuff!

GloriaSmud · 23/02/2015 06:34

Perhaps one last one ~ just a hint of red in this one.

DustBunnyFarmer · 24/02/2015 21:27

I'm really pissed off at the moment. Abisko is all blurry and pixellated and only the Porjus fisheye is working on the EU aurora cam site. What a bust!
