Armchair aurora watching

I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

oh those pictures are beautiful and the Tromso webcam ~ they've got so much snow at the moment!
I keep checking in but either nothing's happening or it all happens later in the evening and I miss it! And one of my favourites, the North Finland one is frozen on the scene from Monday evening at the moment ~ I knew they shouldn't have moved it!

Early hints of Aurora at Porjus and Abisko already this evening.

Despite the bright lights, Porjus is giving a pretty good display at the moment.

Damn, I missed it! We are getting close to the new moon. I hope all the flaky cameras get fixed before we get to the dark bit of the month.

Good stuff at Abisko at the moment.

It looks very spooky - the aliens are coming! (The dark skies are helping, I think.)

Clear (and dark, starlit) skies at Porjus and Abisko tonight. Fingers crossed....

Abisko just warming up nicely. I think we could be in for a good show tonight against such dark skies.

You can see the same pattern/colour mix on the Porjus fisheye.

Just had a look back at what was happening at Abisko earlier ~ looks like it's quietened down for a bit since then. Funny how there can be such lovely colours even when the aurora forecast isn't that great.

Famous last words ~ latest Abisko one and things seem to be building again!

Give it time Gloria. I reckon there's more to come.

There were some even more dramatic ones earlier. Sodankyla and the Porjus fisheye also showing a glimpse of the lights on the horizon.

D'oh! Missed the display last night but it's still going on now!

Actually having looked closely, I think that the skystation one has frozen again so it isn't still going on ~ I thought it was unusual as all the other cameras were showing light blue/morning skies!

Abisko has just unfrozen (2nd shot just posted) - it is blurry but spectacular.

Porjus North Camera is still live elsewhere on t'internet and lovely.

Fab stuff tonight - I'm going to use up my allowance if I'm not careful.
