Armchair aurora watching

I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

We have a clean camera at Abisko! This is one from earlier.

Oh Gloria, you beat me to it! I was scrolling through the thumbnails since I went to bed last night & suddenly the camera view cleared - hallelujah! Good to have you back, Abisko!

OK, good to know that the aurora is visible from the newly positioned North Finland camera, even if this isn't a stunning example.

Oh good ~ some aurora's been seen at last! I'm trying to work out whether the 'green snow' is a reflection from Aurora behind the camera or coming from somewhere/thing else e.g. lighting or something.

Abisko's looking like something from a Sci-Fi film at the moment!

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/02/2015 18:43

I think it's light falling from a window or something else nearby, as there's been light on the snow over the last few nights even when it was dark above. It is odd looking though.

'Tis unfortunate it just happens to be one of the main aurora colours!

I've just been having a play looking for some more aurora webcams and found this International Space Station live stream. 'Tis rather soothing watching it (although the signal's a bit iffy ~ it's showing a blue screen at the moment) and perhaps aurora can be seen at times (otherwise I've linked to something totally off topic!)

GloriaSmud · 07/02/2015 19:09

Some hints of green at Muonio at the moment.

Oh man, that ISS link is genius Gloria! Even DH is impressed and he's "SO over the aurora".

Muonio bringing home the bacon!

Aaaaand, it's gorn again ~ both Space Station link and Aurora!
Seems to be snowing at North Finland, we can watch a build up of snow on that camera!

I just plugged this thread on the current sunset thread in _Chat. There are some glorious photos there, but it got me wondering whether our early attempts were any good so I've just whizzed through the last 28 pages. We've managed to capture some really lovely pictures over the last few months. I might have to archive this thread when we've filled it up.

Yes, there have been some excellent moments caught. I managed to work out (me, not being very good when it comes to technology!) how to use one of the screenshots I took just before Christmas, as one of my screensavers. It was the time Abisko had a real show of red/blue Aurora.

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/02/2015 20:56

Those pictures were glorious. That was probably one of the best aurora we've seen this winter.

Pretty good show so far at Alaska.

GloriaSmud · 08/02/2015 19:04

Some evening loveliness at North Finland at the moment.

Thanks Gloria. Good to know that camera is positioned ok.

It is indeed ~ as much as anything because the others are not so good at the moment! Been quite unusual colours at North Finland this evening ~ lots of views of reddish flufffy clouds with green aurora behind.

Things might be getting going at Abisko at last.

DustBunnyFarmer · 09/02/2015 17:34

Lovely starry night at Porjus skycam. All we need now is the lights!

Porjus north view, a bit grainy because I took this on my phone & had to blow it up.

I've been looking for an alternative webcam in Tromso and like the view at this one, although it is positioned facing south west so no good for the lights. It's lovely and snowy at the mo.

Not much doing on our usual webcams today. Sad

Oh God, I hate posting a Daily Mail link, but the aurora photos in the article are really good.
