I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

Yes, I'd spotted the upswing in activity - was going to paste the same shot as you!

I like the lone wispy cloud and inky black starry sky above in this one.

The Porjus fisheye is nice at the moment but PorjusCamera 3 looks like any Aurora is going to be spoilt by the moon for the next few nights.

This was North Finland earlier - lucky tourists.

Arse. Here is a photo, but recent - I didn't actually take the snap I thought I had earlier.

Surf's up! Or whatever the aurora equivalent is. Head over to Abisko.

Out of interest, I've been wondering if we have lurkers or whether its just 4 or so regulars in here. If anyone can bear to out themselves, I'd be interested to know.

(After a busy few nights and not being able to aurora watch) signing in as a regular!
That's a lovely one at Abisko and thought I just saw a hint of green behind the clouds at North Finland but it's gorn again. Abisko looks like the best one at the moment.

GloriaSmud · 30/01/2015 20:13

Ooo, ooo aurora at Þingvellir too!

GloriaSmud · 30/01/2015 20:14

Oooo, ooo over Hekla too!

DustBunnyFarmer · 30/01/2015 21:47

Good spot on the Milacams, Gloria!

This is a lovely wishy-washy watercolour one. I guess the fuller moon phase does have some advantages.

I lurk lots on this thread, post occasionally - torture myself gazing at the web cams and am pestering DH to go on a northern lights tour. I can't seem to load the milacams on my iPad which is a shame as Thingvellir is one of my favourite places - but when we were in Iceland in the winter it was too cloudy to see any activity.

DustBunnyFarmer · 30/01/2015 22:34

Phew! It's not just the 4 of us then, Pearl.

The Milacams can be found via livefromiceland.is.

I can find them - but always get a can not connect to sever message and am too lazy to go and look on the desk top.

GloriaSmud · 31/01/2015 18:00

Some early evening loveliness from North Finland.

Oh my! The North Finland aurora camera has been repositioned. No more tourist envy!

And some funky goings on at Abisko just now - the snow has been wiped off the lens, but it looks like other stuff is going on. Keeping my eyes peeled for balaclava man...

I'm trying to work out who/what this is. Is it an arm, a leg or what?!
And a new camera position at North Finland. I hope it has as good a view of the aurora as the other one!
I'm a bit Shock at the amount of snow that Porjus has ~ it seems to have had a huge amount in the last 24 hours.

GloriaSmud · 01/02/2015 19:05

I think Þingvellir seems to have had a reposition too. Why is everything being moved about?!

I somehow seem to have discovered a different Porjus camera ~ not sure I've seen this one before.

DustBunnyFarmer · 01/02/2015 19:44

Good webcam sleuthing, Gloria. We should be saving these links for when we outgrow this thread - we'll then be able to include them all in the OP.

Arm and yellow glove in foreground on the pic above, Gloria.

Yes, lots of extra snow at Porjus. The skies have been very heavy and the visibility limited for the last few days, so I'm not surprised. Also Abisko seems to be getting a fair amount too, on & off. I wonder if they've had the tail end of the weather system we had earlier in the week.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 03/02/2015 20:31

Ah, it was an arm ~ I thought it looked like a wellington boot with a yellow bit covering the toes!
Not a lot to be seen Aurora-wise. The skidoos at Porjus are getting more of a snow covering though!

DustBunnyFarmer · 03/02/2015 21:12

Oh dear, just posted this in a complete inappropriate thread in Relationships.

This is Abisko just now. Until they get the snow on the camera sorted out, this looks to be the best that we can expect.
