I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

Did you notice that the Porjus fisheye is back up, just above the scene with the skidoos?

OP posts:
DustBunnyFarmer · 25/01/2015 22:42

I think Abisko is trying, but it's too cloudy to get very far.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 25/01/2015 22:51

Porjus camera1 is showing a hint of green but it isn't so obvious on Porjus 3 (with the skidoos ~ has one gorn a-travelling, there seems to be one less now!)
I've just realised the Porjus fisheye was the one with an NRA message (or something like that!) about it being down. I hope the Tromso and Svalbard ones come back as well ~ the Tromso one is usually very good.

What's the HTML address for Porjus1, Gloria?

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 25/01/2015 22:53

Here we are ~ Porjus1

PseudoBadger · 25/01/2015 22:54

I miss Tromso

DustBunnyFarmer · 25/01/2015 22:59

Me too, Badger. I was just trying to find an alternative Tromso camera and found these weather cams at the University of Tromso: weather.cs.uit.no/cam/

Lovely diffuse green light at Porjus1.

Good to see Sodankyla finally getting off its arse and doing something. It is still pretty dark and murky, all the same.

I've been busy again !

I can't see tromso on aurora cams for some reason ?

This Alaska camera is at the Poker Flat range, often used for rocket launches. I reckon we have one on camera at about 9pm what do you think? allsky.gi.alaska.edu/#page-tonight

PseudoBadger · 26/01/2015 06:34

Looking around on the net it was a launch, might be a few more in the next few hours. Armchair rocket launches!

PseudoBadger · 26/01/2015 10:40

More strange things going up at about midnight their time (time lower right of the screen)

GloriaSmud · 26/01/2015 11:16

Oooo armchair rocket launching as well!
Interesting ~ what are those things?! I can't work out whether they come from the same direction/area as the rocket but then I can't work whether the rocket launched from the left or the right!

PseudoBadger · 26/01/2015 11:19

There is talk of weather balloons?

GloriaSmud · 26/01/2015 11:46

Maybe. I've done a 'google' of 'weather balloons at night' and can't find film of them going off with such bright lights. It's hard to make out what they are as the film is so fast and I can't pause it quickly enough at the right spot!

PseudoBadger · 26/01/2015 11:57

All is answered on the Poker Flat Research Range facebook page. Looks like this. Go to 'posts to page' and all is answered.

Some great photos

DustBunnyFarmer · 26/01/2015 19:51

Loving the addition of rockets, Badger. That was great footage from the Alaska camera - really bright aurora. I keep forgetting to check that one in the evening for the previous evening's footage, as I generally don't have time to check the Alaskan one during the day when the footage is live streaming.

I have taken some nice ones of Porjus this evening, but no photo allowance at the mo. Will post later unless I get better ones.

Name - every now & then, one of the sky cameras goes offline. Don't know why - possibly repairs. Just be reassured that none of us can see it.

The cloud has lifted at Abisko. It's quite pretty at the moment in an understated, watercoloury way. There are little glimpses that it might ramp up later.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 26/01/2015 21:02

Abisko is quite watercoloury at the moment. I thought this was very pretty a few minutes ago ~ I shall call this art 'Hints of Pink!'

I am enjoying Abisko. Sometimes low key is fine - especially with the stars so visible.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 26/01/2015 22:28

Abisko's suddenly burst into life ~ I'm liking the pink and green here from a few minutes ago.
