I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

Green whisps just seem to fill the sky at North Finland at the moment!

GloriaSmud · 22/01/2015 20:02

I've only got one photo left and I keep going between the websites, trying to decide which picture to take but can't as the views keep getting better!

GloriaSmud · 22/01/2015 20:07

Think it's going to have to be this one ~ 'tis lovely seeing it curl back on itself.

Evening all. Isn't it lovely? I haven't got any of my photo allowance back yet, as I think I started it caning it after 9pm and the allowance seems to kick back in after 24 hours. I'll keep an eye on things and start posting pics again when I can.

it has been wonderful.
I wonder if it'll start up again in a bit ~ sort of an 'Aurora Part 2' like it did last night!

DustBunnyFarmer · 22/01/2015 21:56

I'm starting to have my photo privileges revived. I like the subtle shades in this one.

Wow some beauties tonight too. Sad I missed it. Was over at a friends.

DustBunnyFarmer · 22/01/2015 22:47

There are thumbnails below the main photo at Abisko, name, so you can scroll back over the last approx 36 hours. It's only the EU site that overwrites every time it refreshes.

Ooh right will go have a look. I do hope it's as good as this in March when I go !

DustBunnyFarmer · 22/01/2015 23:25

We've been watching Iceland periodically and you can see on the map on the EU page how far south the aurora gets. It's a bit hit & miss but there's no reason why you couldn't be one of the lucky ones. Are you staying in Reykjavik? if so you might need to get a taxi out to a darker surrounding area, as city light pollution will diminish your sighting.

Yes I am. I'm hoping to go on a tour a bit further away for a decent view. I also hear the aurora is more active around the equinox - which is when going. Fingers crossed.

DustBunnyFarmer · 22/01/2015 23:32

We'll be keeping everything crossed for you too.

I was just about to post that picture but you got there first!

DustBunnyFarmer · 25/01/2015 22:38

Good to know I'm not the only one keeping an eye on things. It's been quiet the last couple of nights.

PseudoBadger · 25/01/2015 22:38

Lovely!

DustBunnyFarmer · 25/01/2015 22:39

It's very pretty, shame there's no tourists at the cabins to enjoy it.

I'll post this one instead ~ very nice at North Finland tonight but nothing at Abisko at the moment.

For the first time ever on this thread, I think that's the same picture!

DustBunnyFarmer · 25/01/2015 22:40

Sorry Gloria. I'll give it a rest for a bit so you can get in there.
