I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

There's a stonkingly intense orange glow at both Porjus and Abisko right now, but really poor visibility. If we had clear skies I expect it would be fabulous. Will try to get a shot on my phone & post.

Helsinki too, though this is Porjus.

Camera fixing human at Abisko!

That should have been hyphenated. Clearly the human is fixing the camera, not the other way around.... The image has been improved significantly by the human intervention, although it's still pretty cloudy.

Grin at the camera fixing human although looking at the current image, I think he's needed again!

Paging Abisko Balaclava Man... Paging Abisko Balaclava Man.

It has made me wonder if they are all getting a battering/blizzards with the high winds we are experiencing. Porjus has looked very snowy and overcast the last couple of days.

I think last night's storm is over that way at the moment (but not as bad as Scotland's had it) but (if I'm reading the charts right) it'll be our storm tonight/tomorrow that'll affect them more ~ could give them a quite a bit more snow!

GloriaSmud · 10/01/2015 17:07

Some nice Aurora at North Finland and Tromso at the moment. Abisko ~ totally covered by snow!

More nice Aurora at the moment ~ don't think there are any tourists there to enjoy it though this evening!

And big LOL at green snow at Abisko

Yes, the green snow at Abisko is tantalising and frustrating in equal measure.

I've just snapped a few, though I see you two have already beaten me to it. North Finland, Porjus and Tromso. If only they'd unfreeze Svalbard, I am sure we'd be getting show there too.

Early start at Porjus and Tromso

pearlgirl · 13/01/2015 22:38

Tromso looks amazing at the moment. I keep checking to see what is going on .

DustBunnyFarmer · 13/01/2015 23:22

Thanks for the heads up pearl. It is pretty at the mo. Shame no-one has given Abisko a wipe all week. I reckon we've missed a lot of action.

Tromso up and running tonight.

Contended sighs here. Good to have you back, Abisko.

Yay Abisko's back ~ I'd kind of left off Aurora watching a bit as Abisko was snow covered and there wasn't much to see when I looked at the other webcams. Now all we need is my other favourite, North Finland to come back online and it'll be happy sighs all around!

DustBunnyFarmer · 15/01/2015 19:25

I snapped this earlier because there was something new (and unexpected) in a familiar scene. Shame the pristine snow has been mashed up.

It is a bit of a snowy mess now (at Porjus.) DH and I were just looking at the depth/height of snow on the building on the right ~ that is some amount and weight!

Not much in the way of proper Aurora but there are some nice colours at Abisko at the moment.

DustBunnyFarmer · 15/01/2015 21:57

I know - I've been keeping an eye on the snow too and it's quite impressive. It may even be worth linking to the Porjus site from your snow thread, as it is usually pristine and it's not uncommon to get snow storms on the camera.

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 16/01/2015 16:29

Oooo good suggestion about linking although things are not looking so pretty at the moment ~ is that the moon and a reflection from a curtain spoiling things?!
SpaceWeather are saying there's a good chance of geomagnetic storms over the next few days. Could be a good chance of Aurora spotting!
