I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

I've always dreamed of experiencing North Kent Xmas Grin

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2014 21:46

Grin at 'experiencing North Kent.' I think I might have experienced North Kent a while back but the tablets soon sorted it!

Nice one from Abisko earlier (I think I'm running out of photos on my daily allowance)

'Tis like looking into a Black Hole surrounded by colour at Svalbard at the moment.

I was reading about Polar Stratospheric Clouds on spaceweather.com after someone from VolcanoCafe mentioned it. This is the intro to the article: " A possible outbreak of polar stratospheric clouds (PMCs) is underway around the Arctic Circle. Unlike normal grey-white clouds, which hug Earth's surface at altitudes of only 5 to 10 km, PMCs float through the stratosphere (25 km) and they are fantastically colorful. Ivar Marthinusen sends this picture of the phenonenon from Skedsmokorset, Norway". I'm attaching the picture because it is lovely.

Also on spaceweather.com, here is the explanation for last night's amazing show:

"SOLSTICE GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A coronal mass ejection (CME) hit Earth's magnetic field on Dec. 21st, sparking a G1-class geomagnetic storm. For sky watchers around the Arctic Circle, the longest night of the year was filled with colorful lights."

The article is accompanied by this amazing photo by Truls Tiller from Tromsdalen, Norway.

FB reports of UK sightings. As luck would have it I'm in NI for Christmas - i'm trying to persuade DP to come for a drive to have a look!

DustBunnyFarmer · 24/12/2014 12:47

Please report back if you have success, Badger. Good luck!
