I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

Abisko has an unusual cloud affect this evening. Very pretty.

Svalbard's still putting on a show at the moment.

I love that we're seeing action at Tromso and Svalbard. Those cameras were dull for weeks.

Porjus has less reflection and some auroras tonight

DustBunnyFarmer · 20/12/2014 22:08

Yes, I got a picture about 10 min ago - attached.

I like this burst of aurora at Svalbard this morning in dawn/daybreak light.

Actually, it's the same at Tromso - you can make out the greenish tinge at the top of the camera. I suppose the aurora is like starlight - it is there all the time, even during the day, but the daylight is usually too bright to see it.

Getting dark again at Svalbard and still going strong.

It is also interesting to scroll back through Abisko, as it has been dark again for ages and the series of blue skies shots in the middle of the day was quite brief. Today is the midwinter solstice, so THE shortest day of the year. The days will start to lengthen from tomorrow.

Here's Abisko showing a tint of the purple evident at Svalbard.

Porjus is awash with green at the mo.

GloriaSmud · 21/12/2014 17:59

Svalbard has some lovely colours showing at the moment and there's a good Aurora forecast as well. I'm glad they seem to have moved the Porjus camera back/adjusted it, the reflection was spoiling things!

Not sure whether it's my imagination but at Þingvellir, I can just make out the outline of the hills. Perhaps a chance of seeing some Aurora there?

DustBunnyFarmer · 21/12/2014 18:12

It's possible, Gloria. The forecast shows it reaching Iceland this evening.

DustBunnyFarmer · 21/12/2014 19:43

It's really bright at Tromso at the mo.

And at Tromso.

I'm turning in soon, but it's been lovely pretty much all day and night at Tromso & Svalbard today. Perhaps related to the shortness of the day - we must be bang in the middle of whatever the opposite to midnight sun is.

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2014 09:34

Look what was happening in the early hours of this morning ~ blue/purple Aurora! (I saw a bit of this at Abisko ~ blasted sleep patterns shot to bits at the moment!)

GloriaSmud · 22/12/2014 09:35

And hints of it at Tromso as well.
