I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

Full moon tonight, which is making for a rather different aurora. I took a screen shot of Porjus because, although there is no aurora, the moon is so bright it is casting a shadow on the snow in the foreground. Then two shots of the aurora at Abisko - again, a very bright sky with the full moon. So much so, it almost looks like daylight. I rather liked the diffuse, watery effect on the aurora - less dramatic than during a new moon, but attractive all the same.

I keep checking most evenings to see if there are any Aurora and there's nothing when I look! I wish the North Finland camera would come back online ~ there have been some good views from that one.

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/12/2014 11:43

I agree about the north Finland one - I also like that it has proper foreground so you can see the lights in context.

High readings at the moment and some lovely shots on the Abisko camera about half an hour ago. Also, the green has mixed with the clear sky at Porjus to give a lovely turquoise.

The middle one above is because the colours were so pleasing, not because there is any aurora to see.

Iceland might be one to watch tonight as well ~ with a 'very high' Aurora forecast. Þingvellir looks like it has a clear starry sky at the moment.

GloriaSmud · 07/12/2014 19:11

I think there's a slight greenish tinge at Þingvellir at the moment!

Optimist1 · 07/12/2014 20:04

Abisko looking lovely!

Þingvellir's putting on a show as well at the moment

DustBunnyFarmer · 07/12/2014 20:18

Wow! It is bright at Þingvellir, Gloria - best I've seen in a long while. I took a screen shot, but I'm out of photo uploads for today.

Kiruna and Tromso's fisheye cameras are showing green aurora too. Tromso is a surprise, that's usually covered in show.

'Tis indeed lovely (Porjus1)

Hopefully going by the Aurora forecast and with clear skies, there should be a good show tonight.
The Aurora playing peek-a-boo through the clouds earlier at Abisko!

Ooh, some crackers there Gloria. Thank you for posting. I had work to do for tomorrow, so have only just had a chance to check in. Porjus is still pretty, but the lights are more diffuse now.

I keep thinking how cloudy it's been the last week or so at Abisko and how much the full moon dilutes the effect. Then I see the tourists on the viewing tower and realise that it is totally luck of the draw. Discover the World do a trip to Swedish Lapland which includes a trip to Abisko. It costs a bomb and there's really no guarantee of seeing anything. If anything, if we do go to Lapland, this sustained snooping via webcams has managed my expectations more appropriately.

A rare (faint) Tromso one for posterity too - as we rarely get this camera without snow cover.

It's proper fill your boots stuff tonight - even some of the usually dull and non-event cameras are showing aurora. I wish there was a bigger photo limit on here.
