I'm starting this discussion because I was in danger of hijacking the Icelandic volcano thread. I started using the Mila Icelandic webcams to watch the eruption at Holoraun (the Bardabunga webcams), but lately I've seen the aurora borealis quite a few times on the other webcams, particularly the Thingvellir webcam www.livefromiceland.is/webcams/thingvellir/, although the lights can be seen sometimes on the Hekla and Jokulsarlon ones.

Another OP posted a link to the Hotel Ranga aurora cam, which is here: www.hotelranga.is/northern-lights/northern-light-webcam/

I am posting a couple of pics below for comparison to get you started. The first is a lovely aurora shot at Thingvellir from September, then a more blurry one from last night and a normal dark evening shot.

If you can find any other lovely aurora cams please post links (and pics) below. Happy hunting!

Yes, I thought that too Gloria. I think much of the cloud and gloom earlier in the week was heavy snow.

That should be a 'slight touch of Aurora' ~ not 'slight tough'. Good grief!

DustBunnyFarmer · 30/11/2014 19:23

That's funny, I was just about to post the same picture at Abisko. It's clouded over in the last few minutes, so really hit & miss tonight I think.

Yes, I think it will be a bit hit and miss there tonight ~ clouds seem to have cleared again for the moment.

DustBunnyFarmer · 30/11/2014 19:55

A glimpse of the lights when the clouds lift at Abisko. I think some of the light is a waxing moon.

Wow - it's really got going since I last checked in. How I envy these lucky bastards watching from the tower!

Yes, it's a good show for them tonight!

GloriaSmud · 30/11/2014 21:53

I keep looking on the Icelandic webcams to see if there's anything showing there and haven't seen anything yet. I think tomorrow's looking better according to the IMO's Aurora forecast.

DustBunnyFarmer · 01/12/2014 22:29

Aurora (blurry and nondescript on my screenshot) on the Thingvellir camera right now - it is especially bright because there is now snow on the ground.

I was just trying to work out whether the brightness was down to snow or Aurora (or both!)

DustBunnyFarmer · 01/12/2014 23:07

Both, I think. You can see the background light level subtly shifting if you watch for a bit. When there's no aurora, it's just dark, dark, dark.

Cloud and aurora is making some weird effects at Abisko tonight.

Now the moon is nearly full, it's really bright at Porjus tonight - it's like daylight. I checked it much earlier this evening and got a view of the inside of a dwelling from a table top perspective - seems someone was fixing up the camera!

Faint green aurora on Porjus just now.

This view pleases me for reasons I quite explain. Possibly the blues or maybe the clear skies and the promise of aurora.

Good evening, DustBunny ! Yes, that's a lovely view - very serene. The Bardarbunga view (first one, not B2) looks Turner-esque to me tonight. Can you educate me as to the horizontal lights currently visible on the Brdarbunga2 camera, please?

DustBunnyFarmer · 03/12/2014 20:01

I haven't been following the Bardabunga/Holoraun eruption as closely of late, but that horizontal light is usually the river of red hot lava running out from the craters to the edge of the lava field. Last time I was up to date, it was following the course of one of the rivers in that area.

It's such a clear night on the Kiruna fisheye that I can see one of the constellations really clearly, only I don't know which one it is. Can any of you help?

PS Ignore the moon at 5 o'clock - I know what that is. It is the stars slightly to the left and above that I'm interested in.

Optimist1 · 04/12/2014 07:04

Thanks for info about Bardarbunga - it certainly looked like a river of lava, but I wasn't sure. And sorry I can't help with your constellation!

DustBunnyFarmer · 04/12/2014 19:53

For the first time that I can remember, the Tampere camera is clear and I can make out what's going on. Could be interesting to keep an eye on tonight.
